copy hd data

can anyone please help,hd appears to be on the way out but i dont want to lose the data and start reloading all the software/updates.can i copy the data to another hd and replace the old one with it.

yes. Plug the other HD in, and format it, copy files over, then junk the old HD. How old is it any way?
