IDE error #1 installed new slimline combo drive

Hi,
I am a pretty technical person as far as I know how to change out my drive, but for some reason it's not working. Help.
Here's the sitch, I have a Toshiba Satellite 2415 S205, my cd/dvd combo drive crapped out when I was in Iraq. I purchased a new drive and it didn't work right away, then for some reason it worked for about 12 hours, now it's not working again. I didn't do anything to make it work, it just decided to recognize it.
So when I boot up it gives me IDE error #1, and the hardware manager doesn't recognize that there is even a drive connected. Computer works fully otherwise.
Any suggestions? I've heard of doing a bridge of the pins 45 and 47 but I don't fully understand that. Can anyone help, pics would be great, but a good description I should be able to work with.
Thanks,
Dan
