XP with a mind of it's own

hello gang,
at my wits end. have a compaq system that has random boot hangs. most of the time it locks up just before the desktop loads. others , about 45 sec after broadband connection is made. other times , mouse has loss of key functions. have to upplug mouse, boot, shut down , replug & reboot to have mouse to work again. system crashes on virus check, backup, or printouts.

I have gone through the restore points only to have system to crash before you can back up data files.

was getting a "file s3nbm.sys no found" on driver load. fixed that by loading driver from floppy. Ran XP repair routine several times to make sure OS was intact. CPU usage is at 0% on hangs. I have not yanked the memmory yet (128 +512 sticks)

any ideas?

check your msconfig (that is, go to run on the start menu and type msconfig) startup - see if you have anything stray in there.

Beyond that, is the pc excessively hot? have you run scandisk?
