There shouldn't be any problem for XP I would not even think about installing Vista on it. What are the system specs? You may be able to dual boot XP and 98.

might i add that you should/will likely need to add more ram and hard drive even ,add that to $100.00 + for a copy of winxp,there money might be better spent on a better used computer ,or even new computer . http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...&product=59937

HP includes XP in the FAQ for this machine, so you're probably OK.
Last time I looked, the XP upgrade was $89.00 (If you can find it) and RAM is cheap nowadays-get at least 512 MB.
