Laptop Problems with Deskptop/Start Menu

Expand Post »
My laptop, which is a Toshiba Satellite, started acting a little weird. I had decided to run a simple virus scan with AVG, and upon completion, I restarted the laptop. I logged back in, and the screen sort of froze. Eventually (about a minute later) the background picture came up, and I figured it was all right. There a few problems. First, none of my desktop icons came up, at all. My start menu also failed to show, along with the entire taskbar at the bottom of the screen. Basically, my computer froze on the background. I CTRL+ALT+DEL and tried running MSN 7.5, which would not load. Limewire, WOULD load though. It seems that there are specific programs, like iTunes, MSN, and Windows Media Player will not open. I'm wondering if anyone knows what I should do, and if there is anything seriously wrong.

PS: My laptop is running on a Centrino processer, and I have Windows XP...if those make any difference
