I am confused about Android user rights. A lot of times you have to root your phone to get access to do things, but some programs run on a non-rooted phone in a way that would seem they have root access. Examples would be AppLockers, Antivirus programs, and Safe Browsing programs like K9. How can those applications block programs from running, scan for viruses, and have so much authority on a non-rooted phone?

Never have I ever had to root my son's Android OS based phones, or my Google Nexus 7 tablet. As for stuff like AV software, it runs with "Granted" rights. But not so much, that it opens the OS up to possible malware.
Android is a Linux based OS. There is plenty of info out there, how you are able to run the OS, without opening those doors per say, that you do not need to.
