Zen Cart

I am very new to zen cart.. like 2 weeks into it. I'm having an issue with a virtual product. I want to issue ads on my website and want to take purchase of ad space through zen cart. The user will create the ad, once they are happy with it they are sent to Zen Cart to complete the purchase. On Successful purchase I want Zen Cart to update my own records that the purchase was good and its ok to show the ad.

My issue is Im not sure how to keep track of the customer when he goes through the shop inorder to update the right record in my db. Can anyone help!?!?
