Google AdWords would be an ideal place to start .. then overture then also read the tutorials here:

http://webmaster-tools.sustainedhits.com/

There are the tools there to check your rank.. popularity and also check your keywords and such.

It also provides you with the KNOWLEDGE of how to optimize your pages.

Also another good source...

http:/pagerank.net

They also have good tools to use to check with.

Ken,

I agree it can be exepensive. But if used correctly you can make alot of money with it.

Meaning you have a good product and you market it correctly.
