The following are some of the important press release distribution sites, where press or news releases can be submitted free of charge. If you want maximum exposure to your release, it is recommended to go for paid ones or contribute to upgrade your release.

PRweb is no longer free, as from end of October they charge per release posted.

I think the change was made a couple of days before the post, but you wouldn't know unless you tried to actually submit a press release at which point you get the message about how the market has changed and 'that will be forty bucks please' pops up.

no one will write press releases for free. I know some freelance writers who do this for a cheap fee from $10-$20. You can contact them here

Thanks for this list, will definitely come in handy. However if you are a company trying to promote something I highly recommend a paid press release that is syndicated across newsrooms. You will get much more exposure, you will get much more back links and chances of them getting picked up major publications are also high.
