I'm not sure there are 2,000 actual article directory sites. My company owns the software Article Submitter Pro and we scour the web looking for new directories all the time, but currently have about 1,300 directories preloaded into the software.

About 300 directories were removed from our list recently because they either closed down their article intake, or shut down completely. We check our list frequently, so we're always looking for replacements. If they exist, we'd find them

There's always places like Yahoogroups and Googlegroups too. I believe there are hundreds, if not thousands of lists that take in articles (if you don't mind getting thousands of articles back every month in your email). Article Submitter Pro helps you submit to those as well, but their effectiveness is minimal. Most people send incoming articles from those places into their junk folders.

Article submission is an amazing way to promote. Unfortunately too many people who submit really don't understand the concept behind it, so they spam the directories, overloading them to the point where they have to stop accepting articles in order to catch up.

If everyone submitted good quality articles, and put them into the proper categories so they could be easily moderated by the directory owners, we'd probably have over 4,000 directories to submit to at this point. But unfortunately that's just not the case anymore.
