Facebook caves in on privacy

0
By Guy Clapperton on May 25th, 2010 10:30 pm

The headline says it all - Facebook has rearranged its privacy rules after massive bad feedback from users on multiple social networks. The issue spread as far as news sites including those of international broadcasters and newspapers.

There had been plans for members to use 31 May as a mass quitting day if the company didn't capitulate. It has now said the revamped privacy settings are history and it will announce the replacement on its blog tomorrow (26 May).

As it stood, your Facebook page would become searchable by default to anyone on the Internet. If you deselected the option it would still be searchable if any of your contacts were searchable.

I still say if you don't want people to find you on the Internet, don't put a Facebook page up there. Anything that appears under your name is likely to attach to you at some stage and I'd always advise anyone who was new to the Net to consider carefully whatever they put online.

i agreed with Guy Clapperton and recommend the same thing.

i do not understand why does these social networking sites hire good professionals who can really understand the meaning of PRIVACY! thousands of identity theft have been done on FB and still there security experts are not good enough to come up to something good! i think soon there will be day when everyone would stop using FB and jump to some other platform which takes care of their privacy fully.

I agree, FB will stay alive for a 4-5 years and that's it. We cant do nth with this security system. What we can do? Not to post very personal information, some very-very private fotos or video. I'm afraid that's the only reliable way to protect yourself.

Cheers!

As far as I am concerned Facebook has pretty much proved that it doesn't get user privacy concerns at all. It has flip flopped all over the shop with one privacy policy fiasco after another. If this was the first time Zuckerberg had gone 'whoops, never realised our members cared about their privacy' I might forgive him and still trust Facebook to do the right thing. Sadly it isn't and I don't.

Yes Guy, you are 101% right about not using social networking if you don't want people to know what you are up to, that much is common sense. What rattles my cage is the constant moving goal posts that is the Facebook take on user data privacy, that's unacceptable in my opinion. I'd much rather Zuckerberg said 'sod it, all your data are belong to me' and stuck to it than this constant flip flopping.
