Compaq power supply in Cases, Fans and Power Supplies

hi, i have a compaq computer which has a dead power supply.I have tried to repair and replace it with a 24 pin atx power supply but it does not work.It has an atx motherboard but the power supply are not compatable. It is a pentium 4 intel inside.please advice.
