I recently upgraded to Windows7,from Vista. When we opened the box, there were two discs. I wanted to install the 64bit version. When we inserted the disk into the drive it said it couln't install as there was Vista 32bit on the
laptop. So after looking around in the Microsoft helps, and reading something about installing from the CD something
clicked and so I looked up how to boot from the CD, so you hold the right "F" key when starting the computer. Then go into the "bios" to change the boot sequence. Then with the disk in the drive. Start the computer Then "Viola" it worked, just follow the directions and you have a clean install, and a lot faster
computer. You are warned that you need to backup all your data before you do this as the harddrive will be formatted
for the new system. This was done on a four year old Acer laptop. You may need to lookup how to change the boot sequence on your computer, by going into the "bios". I did research here to see if any posts had been made on this
topic. I really didn't have time to go through 1500 posts. HTH someone.

Thanks Bob: I am not on a wireless, but I really think now that the AVG
update was the problem. I haven't had any more problems after doing the
update manually,

This problem is intermittent to some degree. After booting to desktop, and clicking the Mozilla icon to log-on to home page it will say not found. Sometimes it will log on with no
problem. The hard drive activity lite is flashing and the activity lite on the modem like something is being downloaded. I have a program called game booster which is allowing me to shutdown a lot of stuff that runs in the background. That seems to help with the log on problem some of the time.
My computer is an Acer AM1100-B1410A, AMD BE-2350 dual-core 2.1MHz, 2Mg ram, 320 GB H.D.D. Windows Vista Home Premium, Mozilla 3.0.15
I have stopped windows upgrades to the extent that it notifies me when one is available. I am sure that other upgrades are taking place when they want to and I don't know how to find which ones are the culprits. I do have AVG Internet Security 8.5.425
That has 11 features, anti-everything imaginable. I am not an expert on Windows, but I have built computer from parts, and installed the drivers from floppies, and Cd's in the past.
Since I posted 3 Mo ago I am starting a new thread. I have learned to after the computer boots then just immediately Update AVG then
I have had a lot better success logging on to my home page on DSL. As has been suggested before I will check to see that the LAN settings are all clear. Thanks for posting.

This is some related information I read about in one of the solved threads. Where could I find out about the driver, or drivers required for the Speedstream 5100 that is about 4yrs old? So I am wondering if
it is compatible with the Vista Home Premium that is on this machine.
Again thanks for any and all help.

I am using FF to logon. I have to try multiple times to get on DSL. I need to find out the proper settings, DNS, etc.
From reading some of the posts here I have learned to use the CMD prompt to display the settings I have so I can post them here.
Here is the line to type in. "ipconfig /all"
Once I have logged in it works fine. I am using the 32bit version of Vista Premium.
BTW I didn't experience this problem with my previous XP computer.
I sold that computer to my niece who is disabled, and I didn't want
her to have to learn Vista. LOL
Any assistance will be appreciated.

Hello Abel: Communication is very important. When needing help.
1. What is the problem?
2. Is it a software problem?
3. Is it a virus?
P.S. You posted on a programming forum.
So When we or someone else finds out what the
problem is we or they can steer you in the right
direction. I have over 1,500 url in my favorites,
so We have lots of resources at our disposal.
Also I am glad you have an interest in repair of computers,
however I would question the need as a viable means of
making a living. If you have any questions I can give helpful
and relevant answers.

This is what I have seen from experience. Try a different video card, as I recall a bad vidio card will give you the symptom of the keyboard not having any lites. I am not sure about the no lites on the floppy, so you might try swapping the floppy or just disconnect the floppy cables to see if that makes the keyboard lites return. This is called the process of elimination. HTH

The url above list almost all of the processors made. Quite thorough
I must say. I found this because I was interested in the amount of
power that processors consume.

Let's go back to the statement, "It skips when he plays music off the Web. This is not related to cpu mhz, or buss mhz, but it is directly related to download speed from his ISP. He may have to find a higher
speed connection such as DSL, or Satellite. Also we don't know the connect speed or the download speed of his modem. The connect or log
on speed is not the same as download speed. I use a dialup phone line and rarely see over 7k download, but i have listened to music and have had it skip sometimes. The key sometimes is how many on the net are accessing that server at once. It is a fact that servers are time share and the more people that are downloading from that server the slower
each one that is downloading will get.
I hope this helps.

Here is a good url for shopping.
http://www.pricewatch.com/
Next is a good url for test reports etc.
http://www.tomshardware.com
Both of these are BIG. It may take you a few minutes
to learn how to navigate.
I personally own the Altec 621 which is a ordinary stereo, thats 2 speakers and a Subwoofer. It has a good amp 3 that is 2 twenty watt rms for the left and right. Then 60 rms for the sub. I like it very much.
Here is a url to one of the comparisions for the brand you are considering.

As you probably already know, one of the best troubleshooting procedures is to substitute parts. In this case, as you have noted I would recommend subbing the power supply.
BTW you have received some good advice already. Another way to check the memory is if you have two memory cards, would be to take
one out and see what happens. Of course if it is all in one piece then you wouldn't be able to do that. HTH

Here may be some helpful information. Just print it out to do it.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ghost.nsf/8f7dc138830563c888256c2200662ecd/dbb8a85f9f9fe18e882566bb005d3b5c?OpenDocument&prod=Norton%20Ghost&ver=2003%20for%20Windows%202000/NT/Me/98/XP&src=&pcode=ghost&svy=&csm=no
Well that url is a little long. Try this next one.
http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/ghost/ghost_2003_tasks.html
Once you get there, find the search the knowledge base box, type in Upgrade Hard Drive. This will get you to the instructions on how to do what you want to do. Next select how to Perform a Disk to Disk clone.
when you get there select How to create a Dos system disk.
Anyway print all this stuff out. I don't know how this compares to the
Manual or the instruction that you were trying to follow. But I hope this gets your Hard drive working the way you want it to. Sometimes I think
that people underestimate this daunting task. If it is so simple then why is the documentation this big? Anyway I am sorry if I referred to you as a male. My name can be both. I am a male. I just retired this year, I was an Electronics Technician that means TV, Audio, and etc. 32 years of it.

Hi Matt: I just found your post. This is what I found that is pertinent to your scenario. See below.
Belkin (F5D6020) PC Card Network Adapter Product Description

The Belkin Wireless Notebook Network Card easily slides into your notebook's PCMCIA slot, and sets up quickly with Belkin SOHO Networking Software. Used in conjunction with the Wireless Access Point, the Card lets you join your wireless network to your existing wired network. This Plug and Play Card works seamlessly with Windows 95, 98, 2000, NT, and Millennium Edition systems. Interoperable with all 802.11b wireless devices, it uses the wireless Ethernet standard to offer you a working range of up to 1500 feet and speeds of up to 11Mbps. Now you can transfer files around the house or office enjoying freedom from cables along with all the advantages of a wired network.
"Note" The wireless devices that it can be used with must be "802.11b"
compliant. I don't know if that Intel "Anypoint is an 802.11b device, without doing some more research. Hopefully the documentation you have for it will tell you then you will have the answer to your question.
HTH.

Yes if course "Norton Ghost". I am thinking that somewhere in the procedure "mmdm" missed something. I guess I should have said I wasn't familiar with the program called "Ghosting"
However I wanted to be sure that "mmdm" did follow the directions of the program, that is why I tried to give assistance as to how to do it.
Sometimes it is not easy to follow the directions, in other words it is easy to get something out of order.
I am sure we all have done this or been there. HTH.
If "mmdm" is reading this thread, I would say to start over. Reinstall the original source drive, in the original configuration. Then install the new
destination drive, as a slave, then format the slave, to clean it out.
Then carefully check the procedure for the "Ghost" program for the intended scenario. That being making the destination drive the new "Master" drive. The next step will probably be reconfiguring the "original" drive to be the slave. Of course the eide cable connection and the jumpers will need to be reset and or repositioned to make it all work. The key being the order of events. HTH.

I am not familiar with as you say "Ghosting" I assume you made a drive copy with the original drive being "C", to the New Drive "D". I have a Program "Drive Copy" There are several things that it requires before making a copy of the old drive to the new one.
1. Open case and mount the second drive.
2. Reorient the New Master drive to the master position on the ide cable
and the old drive to slave position on the cable, of course set the jumpers accordingly.
3. Restart and enter Bios to set "auto detect" on.
4. Restart and Start copy program with bootable diskette made with
copy program.
5. Select "replace" to copy from source to destination. At this time the program will display the drive letters, which should be Source "D" and Destination "C".
6. If you are then successful in making the new Master drive "C" then after rebooting you should find the old drive to be the slave "D"
I have not done this but as I understand what the book says this should work. HTH.

To change the drive letter assignment for a disk or CD-ROM drive

to open the System Properties dialog box.
Click the Device Manager tab.
Click the plus sign next to the type of drive, and then double-click the disk or CD-ROM drive for which you want to change the letter.
Click the Settings tab.
Under Reserved drive letters, change the drive letter assignment.
Notes
You can also open the System Properties dialog box by clicking Start, pointing to Settings, clicking Control Panel, and then double-clicking System.
