I see, thank you for that info. I just don't want them inside my house. See, I used to have both phone and internet with them but then I got vonage and the day they cut the phone line, they also cut the internet (oops they said). Once they got it back on, magically my internet started having issues. They were very uncooperative about it over the phone, always pushing for a paid visit inside to change wires.
They did in fact schedule the visits, five technicians came inside the house and found nothing wrong. Yet the people on the phone kept pushing for an issue inside in order to have me pay $100 dollars. Completely opposite to what each technician told me. After the fifth technician, I called att again and that's when I was "suggested" I should get my phone back with them in order to get that issue fixed, I remember the rep. saying "just saying, sounds logical... no?". That's when I filed a complain with the Better Business Bureau. It all sounded just way off, haven't finished my bachelor's in computer science but this didn't smell right.
Next day after filing the complain, ATT called me saying they were sending a technician again to see what was going on. The technician and an area supervisor dropped by.
This time, they magically realized the wall jack wasn't good... Same tools, same procedure, but I guess their other five technicians had faulty testers. They changed the jack and the internet came back to normal for a few months.
Of course the wall jack thing was pure BS, clearly a cover up. But just sharing my story with the world just in case it happens to anyone else.
Thanks!

Hi all,
I have att internet (not u-verse) just the internet servie with a 2wire modem-router combo. I'm sick and tired of seeing on my computer that the connection was lost just way too often, every 3 or 5 minutes. I went to check on the logs and I see there's a big amount of this:
fw,fwmon: src=173.166.234.189 dst=99.4.104.116 ipprot=6 sport=34557 dport=3389 Unknown inbound session stopped
fw,fwmon: src=173.166.234.189 dst=99.4.104.116 ipprot=6 sport=25842 dport=3389 Unknown inbound session stopped
it goes on and on...
I can't find enough informatin about it. I don't have any p2p programs in my computer so that is ruled out.
Is this something happening with my computer or am I being persistently attacked or anyone knows what is it?
Thank you for your help!

Hi all,
So this is the problem. My little cousin picked up his brother's macbook and dropped it. The macbook turns on and works, except that the screen is very, very dim.
I am trying to find a way to rule out inverter, inverter cable or if it needs a full screen exchange.
Can somebody help me find out if the screen is doomed or I can try something to bring the brightness back?
Again, it is working, my cousin was able to pass a bunch of files to an external hard drive. However, it was a pain as the screen is very dim.
Brightness button does not have any effect. I pressed the brightness button a few times, then the dimming button as well. The laptop seemed unaffected. Didn't get brighter and apparently didn' get any dimmer.
Thank you in advance!

Additional details:
Something is logged in that computer that completely rejects windows installation disks.
Linux Mint runs like a charm, but by no means the computer will recognize any cd or DVD related to windows. After some readin, what fits best is that the motherboard has a bad ### virus lodged in.
I tried to reinstall the BIOS with a fresh copy, the problem is that I got the files from gateway but I'm stuck at how to make them run on a linux machine (since the computer has only a copy of linux in its hard drive).
So, input on this would be very appreciated.
I read some stuff about cooking up a bootable CD with the fresh BIOS and some sort of DOS emulator, but all the explanations are written in seasoned linux user language.
So, help would be very appreciated.
Thanks!

Virus in linux machine???? Yes! under the following circumstances:
Please, before anyone jumps in with "impossible, there's no viruses for linux, you are stupid" read the post.
I got a friend's computer to fix, Gateway NV53. Fast forward, put a new HDD but it won't accept any windows installation disk. Vista, XP, 7, nothing. It just ignores them everytime and ends telling me no OS was detected.
I then installed Linux Mint 9 on the computer quiet succesfully. It aknowledged the DVD upon boot right away from the first time I put it in. The owner wants windows back in it, but every time I insert a windows disk it completely passes ignored.
I disconnected the CMOS battery for quite a while, twice, and the problem won't go away.
Reading more lead me to believe a virus is logged in the motherboard and it only attacks windows.
What can I do to clean the mobo from linux?
I downloaded the BIOS from gateway but I can't make it run now that the computer runs with linux.
Help and thank you very much!

Trying to find a way to get rid of the "HDD password" problem on a gateway nv53, I took the CMOS battery.
After putting it back, I rebooted the machine. The HDD problem remained but I put in a blank HDD and a linux CD and now the pointer won't move with the trackpad. I connected a USB mouse and it works.
I checked if by accident I had removed the connectin between the pad and the MOBO but it's intact. If anything, after realizing this issue I opened it again and tried to push the ribon cable more inside (though it was already as far in as it can).
May it be just a driver issue? Any other ideas?
Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestion.
Earlier today I digged and took off the CMOS battery for a about an hour but didn't take care of the HDD password issue.
However, now, with the new HDD on, I was able to boot from a Linux Mint installation CD. (I was not able before, not with the new blank HDD)
That's good news so far since it would not boot from a windows 7 dvd.
Now, Linux Mint is still loading but the computer is not mine. If I get it to fully run on the laptop, any idea what to do next as I need to put windows 7 in it.
Taking into account that this HDD is blank, brand new.
Thanks!

Hi all,
A friend brought me this computer, it's a gateway NV53 with windows 7.
The problem was that the HDD was locked. Everytime the computer is turned on, the message "Ennter HDD User Password" appears.
For that, we got a new hard drive for it and a windows 7 installation disk. However, with the new HDD now I get the PHE-E61 error. I changed the boot order to the DVD drive with out good results. Even tried with a dvd with ubuntu and even though I hear the dvd spinning, it eventually ends up with the PHE-E61. Have reset BIOS to default values a few times.
I have put the booting from lan option at the very end of the booting order list to no avail.
When I put back the old hard drive and it consistently gives me the "Enter HDD password" message. Then I put back on the new hard drive and again PHE-E61 error.
Help!
Thank you!

For weeks I have had issues with an AT&T supplied 2wire modem/router.
It keeps constantly rebooting itself and so far has nothing to do with bad jacks (at&t changed them a few months ago) or power supply (I had that problem already and it has a newer one, also power supply issues have different symptoms).
But I had it calling at&t, always same steps and the issue comes back and as I have read, I'm not alone. The last thing I read is that the 2wire itself has that rebooting issue and apparently what makes it reboot could be attributed to the routing functiong of it. And it may occur from day 1 after you purchase it or later down the road.
I have a couple of extra routers just sitting pretty, I think I could just log into the 2wire and disable wifi all together. Then just hook one of my extra routers and connect it to the 2wire as if it was a plain modem and then do the "usual". Log into the router and configure it, then make sure my home devices are signed into the new router.
But I googled up that option and came across a vague "it's much more complicated than that". Can someone point out what's those other complications?
Thank you!
PS. I'm a junior in CS so I can more or less handle technical words, feel free to use them.
Other than that, if you have nothing helpful or your solution is "hire another service" or anything that rather avoids the issue and doesn't come near the information I am looking for, please do not bother to post.

I have an HP G62 with windows 7.
I have a problem with the volume control, it works erratically whether I use the keyboard's hot keys or go directly to the little speaker at the bottom right corner.
-Somtimes volume (or mute) responds several seconds later after holding down the key.
-Sometimes the volume bar on the middle of the screen won't go away until I click on the small speaker on the bottom right corner of the screen.
-Or also, the small volume bar that pops from the lower right corner won't go away on its own. As in, if make it pop up clicking on it, the bar won't go away until I press esc.
Any ideas?
Thank you.

Yes I know that. But again, does not make sense I am surfing the internet watching videos and continuously surfing for 1. 5 hours, but then another time wifi is 'off', screen brightness is at the lowest level and I'm only running microsoft exel and the machine dies in 30 minutes.

How about a bad configuration? is there a way to know if unneccesary procecess are draining the battery and sometimes for some reason they do not run causing the battery to last longer at that particular occasion?

Like I said, sometimes it lasts around 1.5 hours worth of internet surfing. Other times it dies faster even with wifi off.

I have had this laptop running windows 7 for about two years and I have been noticing the battery discharges unconsistenly. Sometimes I am solely surfing the internet through out a whole charge and it does last a good hour and a half more or less.
Other times, right after disconnecting it drops instantly from 100% to 94%. Then just keeps dropping at a fast pace. Yesterday I noticed it was 100% after disconnecting and in less than five minutes I was down to 64% and in a couple of minutes it jumped back up to 96%.
I have tried "Battery Bar" and according to it, on a full charge it marked 2.5 hours and 0 battery wear. Even after unplugging, it would recalibrate itself and start the countdown at 2.5 hours battery time. However, now running unplugged, even with wifi turned off and just using exel, "battery bar" would drop 4-7 minutes of charge time for every minute on the clock.
May this be a faulty configuration or more of a faulty battery?
Thank you!

No, that's a ridiculous "solution" and it doesn't nearly answer my question.

I have an HP G62 with windows 7.
After fully charged, the battery sometimes goes on a slow drain lasting me 2 full hours plus. Other times, it abruptly drops down down to 94% after a couple of minutes of being on, then next couple of minutes is down to 78% like it's on a rush to die. And I'm not even running flash applications.
I do noticed that it's got a @#$%load of procecess going on all the time, ipod update, this and that that I am not even using but still run in the background.
Battery decay with age is unavoidable, but is there anything else I can do, mostly regarding the amount of procecess running on the background?
Other than that I do not run multiple programs at once and try to keep low the number of tabs in my browser. Plus keep the display's brightness usually at second from lowest.
Any other ideas? Thank you!
Oh by the way, I majored in computer science so any ideas that aren't... "regular user" friendly are welcome as well.
