Hey,

I just put together my first custom built PC. I ordered all the parts from newegg, just for reference. Everything was going fine, put it together with little to no problems. Turned it on,it posted, and I started to install windows 7 on it. About a quarter of the way into the setup (it had just started installing the OS files and such) there was a sharp high pitched humm from inside the case and I BSOD'd and it shut itself down. It now wont do anything. Every once in a while if I try turning it on the case lights and fans and all start for just a split second before shutting down. This seems to only happen when i unplug it and plug it back in.

Can anyone hopefully offer and insight to what might of happened, or to what possibly died?

Thanks!

How do you remove the on off panel from the laptop? Can the panel be removed without getting into the laptop?

I am trying to fix a stuck power on off button. I read a thread that was 3 months old where cleaning the panel helped solve the problem.

Thanks for any advice offered.

My laptop computer is only 1 yr old, it started making a weird noise on the fan about 3 months after I bought it but I didn’t think nothing of it.

But now the laptop is completely dead, first I plugged it up and the plug in area where the adapter goes started smoking, I thought maybe it was the battery, so I bought a new battery, and now the laptop worked for 5 min and it died again and the plug in area started smoking up again, and the laptop started smoking, the adapter plug light starts blinking as soon as I plug it into the laptop, and when I smell the plug after removing it from the laptop it smells like burnt rubber

Anyway what can be wrong with it?

My roommate's laptop stated:

Primary hard disk drive 0 not found

This problem was so immediate, we don't know what happened.
It sounds as if the hard drive may be crashing but I have a rare circumstance.

One of my roommates is an ex-military intelligence officer. He is divorced, alone, and a severe alchoholic. We told him today that if he doesn't get better (he can't control himself when he's drunk) that he will have 30 days to get better or he'll have to move back in with his parents. When he gets mad he takes it out on the other people in the house, like a drunk form of revenge.

What I am wondering is can a person with that knowledge crash someone's computer? Can a person totally distroy it because he had the opportunity, knowledge, and motive to do so? Or did it just crash because it's a crappy Dell? Please let me know if it is possible either way.

Please and thank you,

Right,

Got my new PC last week, and yesterday i got my copy of WindowsXP 64-bit Edition Upgrade (the trial one). I currently have WinXP Professional.

Tried to install it, but the setup won't detect my hard drive. Which is impossible since my PC is working mighty fine as it is.

The HDD is a SATA, the motherboard is a GB K8T-something, the AMD64 based one.

During setup, Win will ask me to press F6 if i want to setup a 3rd party SATA HDD, which i did, but then it comes back saying i need a floppy with the drivers. Which i only just found so i'll try this when i get home tonight. The thing is, if my PC is working fine now as it is, it means it already has the proper drivers, so why is the upgrade not detecting it?

As i said i could only fiddle around for a few minutes last night, will check this out properly during the weekend...

But am i missing something?

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

(or i'll just forget about this bloody WinXP-64, although it would have been nice to try it out)

So I bought a duster but I didn't know you shouldn't spray it up-side down. So I did it.. About 2 weeks later, the ethernet plug on the side stops working. Then a week later, the computer won't even start up. Then I open the case and found a lot of white crystal residues everywhere. I'm sure the power supply is functioning right, it's the other components not running. I can't order those parts.

I'm wondering is there anyway to fix the problem without replacing those parts?

Thanks in Advance!
so its down to the motherboard ,i have done my research and its led me to believe its the power regulator , now am very good with pc`s and repair computers daily in normal circumstances i would replace the motherboard but its costly on this laptop ,so i would like to find out exactly whats gone and replace the component ,but i dont know how to check which component and dont know which component is the power regulator ,can someone show me a pic of one and tell me how to test it with a multimeter... i know its a big ask but i have allways wanted to repair motherboards at component level.. cheers

I have a IBM Thinkpad 600E that went dead. After much research, I replaced the CMOS battery. I then restored the BIOS settings (I think). I then tried to boot the machine from the restore CD and all I get is an error code that translates to the machine doesn't have or recognize the operating system. Since the CD has everything packaged together (purchased used in 1999), how can i fix this problem? Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
I already tried going through HP's reboot process but it won't even run the disk. I try using the recovery CD it gets to the first part to start to restore and then spits the disc out! Please Help any ideas I've tried to get a screen to type a command that someone suggested but, don't know how to get the screen to appear to try that? A friend of mine gave me a Travelmate 2500, PhoenixBIOS 4.0 Relase 6.0 Notepad and I discovered that it has a problem - it will not boot and gives error msg “operating system not found”. The disk is not registering in BIOS and so I opened the laptop and discovered the hard disk is missing, so I replaced it with a 60GB IDE Disk and still I am getting the same msg. I tried another 20 GB Hard disk but still get the same msg. I tried both disks on another laptop and they are being detected perfectly.
I am suspecting the BIOS to be corrupt, can some one help ASAP.

I recently decided to DL SP3 for my desktop. Not my shining moment, so here I am..

Im running an ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe mobo, AMD Athlon 4400+ processor on a system I built for myself a while back. Everything was great until I installed the above.

I am stuck in a continuous boot cycle, as the default XP setting is to restart upon crashing. When windows starts up, it goes into the startup options menu like it would if I was to hit the f8 key. It does not register my keyboard (G15, usb connection) - I dug up an old keyboard with a PS/2 connection and still no good. After the 30 seconds it starts up windows normally, just to crash after a brief flash of the blue screen..then repeat the cycle.

Being as how I can't arrow up to start in safe mode/get to recovery mode, I can not disable the "intelppm driver" which should, in theory, fix my problem.

Any suggestions?

Note: I have also tried the USB flash drive/secondary storage trick. I also have a copy of windows 7, but to put it on the same HD will erase my nearly full 750GB. I also have a new HD still in the box, but I want the contents of my current HD, so erasing/tossing it out is not in the equation.

Thank you very much in advance for any assistance!

I have a Gateway MT6706 laptop that will not power up. I was using a replacement Targus AC adapter because the original one shorted out. The new AC adapter seemed to start shorting out as well, but if I held the cord just right, then it'd charge the battery. The cord finally stopped working entirely, so I purchased a new cord. In the meantime, the battery was drained. When I plug in the new AC adapter with the battery in the laptop, a red light flashes on the front of the machine. This is the light that usually pulsates a glowing pink/magenta when the machine is charging. When I pull the battery out and just use the AC adapter, the machine does nothing. I've tested the AC adapter on my HP laptop from work with a different adapter tip and it worked fine with the HP, so I don't think the new AC adapter is bad. Is it possible that there is a problem with the jack on the laptop that you plug the AC adapter into? If so, how bad is that to get fixed? Thanks in advance for any help!

My kitten was niffing around. He walked across it, nothing new. Then he laid down next to it. I think he liked the warmth. So I X'd out of the internet so that if he touched any keys I wouldn't wind up on some crazy website. So he laid very close to the laptop with probably a little bit of his upper body and lower body leaning on the leftside of the keypad. I didn't think that he pressed anything because nothing was happening. But when I waved him away and tried to get back on the curser wasn't moving. I tried it with both the pad and a wireless mouse. I don't know if it's possible that the kitten may have leaned on a few keys that in succsession would cause the curser to become inactive. Please advise if you can.

Bought Platinum MSI ATX mainboard, Geil 2GB Dual RAM, E6600 CPU, Raptor disk. Have had an interesting experience...

HISTORY:
PC started crashing, after a year the Raptor disk died (metallic sound and no boot/access), when I used then only 1 RAM chip at slower than specified latency, it crashed less. Eventuelly it crashed more. I replaced RAM, PC worked fine for a few days, then started crashing. I switched PSU (from 400W to 200W), it crashed less, but suddenly no more boot (just fan on/off sound). The old 400W PSU had a tendency to restart fan at boot, like a faulty engine start. No problem with "new" 200W PSU ("new" PSU I've used for 7 years with Athlon - never a problem).

Got new mATX mainboard, worked super for 1 week. Then new raptor died in the same way. Got new raptor disk. 2 days later, no boot with new mainboard. But then I switched RAM banks, so RAM chip 2 is in bank 1 at the moment and everything is perfect. BUT I expect this will not last...

Any idea of the source of the problem? Should I replace everything as maybe mainboard destroyed ram, and then the destroyed ram will destroy new mainboard and maybe CPU and PSU, so best to replace everything to avoid "infection" from faulty parts? :-/

Know it wont work, when you switch it on its pwer like turns on for one or two seconds and then repeats itself, never getting anywhere near post. I have tried removing the battery and checking it just with the power adaptor, but this has not made any difference at all . I was wondering could the hard drive or more likely the motherboard have been damaged when I dropped it ?Any suggestions would be appreciated.
My computer all of a sudden decided to freeze up, and upon restart, the monitor won't get a signal, the light stays blue. All the other components appear to be running fine, all fans spin, and the HDD appears to be running, there's just no display going to the monitor. I've unplugged all those cables because i think its just loosen but nothing happens. Also, for some reason, when it starts up, the DVD drive keeps acting like it wants to spin, and just keeps clicking away. I'm completely stumped, and hopefully this isn't a sign of the mobo going bad. Any help would be great appreciated!

I have an Acer aspire5100 laptop. I have been unable to use it going on 8 months now, because the mouse and keyboard stopped working. I have tried numorous things from resetting the BIOS from the motherboard (J2 switch) to loading with just the battery or just the AC power. Ive even tried unplugging the keyboard and mouse and re-plugging the back in; so far everything I have tried has not worked.

I must also mention that I cannot access the windows after the welcome screen or get into the BIOS using F2 (because keyboard doesn't work)....

Also, my dad had told me to totally take out the BIOS battery for 24hrs. He told me that he had a similar problem in one of his desktops. Do you think that doing so will solve the problem?

I would say before going any further the hard drive is split so there is a C: & a D:, the C: When the laptop tries to boot it tries going into the D: only. I have tried going into BIOS and setting the first boot device to CD drive, this too has failed to get the desired outcome. The CD drive does not appear to be recognised either. Can anyone point me in the right direction on how to resolve these issues ?
Last week my laptop stopped booting. I hit the ON button and I get the Power light, the battery light (if not on AC) and the HD light (for around 10 seconds) but the screen stays black. It would turn on if I left it off for a few hours but now it has gotten to the point where it never boots.

There are numerous fixes that I have tried. Applying pressure to the RAM, removing one RAM module, switching them around.. All to no avail. Sony Techs told me to remove the battery and AC cord and hold the power button for 30 secs and then reconnect the AC cord and try again but this didnt work.

The laptop is around a year and a half old.

Specs:
Intel Core 2 Duo T8100
Nvidia Geforce 8400M GT
4GB DDR2 RAM
Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit
Can anyone help?
I then got a small fan and installed it in the computer compartment-thinking it was over heating-It still crashes on occasion, usually when I have been on it for sometime and/or have numerous programs running. What does that alarm signify and is there a fix to my problem?

What is happening is the computer starts up as soon as I plug it in, the splash screen comes up then it shuts down and restarts. I don't have time to do anything, not even start it in safe mode.

This happened once before and we replaced the power supply and that seemed to correct it. But its doing it again.

Unfortuantely I don't have the hardware specs availible right now but if any of you want them I'll do my best to find them out. We have Pinnacles Blue Box hooked up to the computer and the appropriate video card for that. That much I know. I also know we have over a gig of RAM on board but I don't know the type or brand.

This is driving me insane as you can probably imagine and any help would be appreciated.

My Dell Inspiron 1526 won't restore after hibernation.

After a recent Vista update the laptop was placed in hibernation mode before the normal 'restart to complete update' process. After a minute or so i press a button expecting to see a logon screen, instead the monitor was off, blank screen with no power. I presss every button but nothing happened. After a restart the monitor remains off but i can still hear 1526 checking the cd drive. I restarted several times trying the Fn+F8 option with an external monitor and pressing the up button while holding Fn but still the same.

1526 appear to be in a wierd state because i placed XP boot cd and restart then hit Enter several times. If the monitor was the only problem then 1526 would boot from the cd as normal. It doesn't, it simply boot, checks the cd drive then does nothing.

The multimedia buttons lights up when i press them and the fan is on.

A couple of weeks ago my computer began to either freeze or reboot several times a day. I noticed that it occured especially during some tasks, such as moving large files from one partition to another. I opened my case to observe if anything was wrong. I played around in Windows until it froze again. After that I couldn't get the computer to boot.

When powered on, all fans (case, cpu and graphics card fans) spin and the hard drive also makes the standard sounds. However, the monitor, keyboard and mouse receive no power (the monitor remains in standby mode). There are no POST beeps. The keyboard flashed the first few times I turned the computer on, but it soon stopped doing that.

I installed a new power supply, but it did not fix anything. I removed all components, reseated the motherboard in the case, reseated the CPU etc. but this also had no effect on the symptoms. I removed all RAM sticks to see if I could get some beeps, but unfortunately this didn't help.

So, in short:

- All fans spin
- Keyboard, mouse and monitor receive no power
- No POST beeps

I've tried the following, all of which have had no effect on the symptoms:

- Removed all unnecessary components, aka "bare bones" system
- Reseated all components
- Replaced power supply
- Replaced RAM
- Reset CMOS
- Removed majority of dust

- Powered on without RAM to see if it would beep

What I haven't tried yet that I could reasonably accomplish:

- Replace video card
- Try with the motherboard outside of the case to rule out shorting.

The second one I have questions about, as I've never done it before. On what kind of surface should I place the motherboard on? Will ordinary cardboard do?

What to do in case neither of these fix the problem? Which component is the most likely culprit? I also wouldn't rule out me forgetting to connect some wires while installing one of the components, so even obvious advice is welcome.

Hi,

First of all, I apologize for any mistake in English, as my native language is French.

I have been using a Dimension 2400 for years without any problem

Now, I am facing the following trouble :

When I press the power button, the front green light is not as dark green as usual. The PC starts untill the display of the windows (XP) logo. And then, the screen gets dark. The mouse works, but no action can be done.

I tried various things such as unplugging the computer or starting in safe mode. But nothing worked.

All the four diagnostic LEDs on the rear are green.

I have also made the following tests :

- by pressing the F12 key, I could reach the menu that allowed me to check the hard disk : the result was "Pass"

- I also tried to go to "Boot to utility partition", but this leads to the display of the Windows logo screen, followed by a black screen

- I also tried to start in safe mode, but this leads to the display of the Windows logo screen, followed by a black screen

Finally, I tried to repair windows xp from the cd, but after the repairing process nothing changed :

I still reach the windows logo screen, and then I get a black screen (just with the mouse cursor on it, which can move)

Could someone help me in this matter ?

Thank you in advance,

Hey guys, I'm having a little trouble and have an odd question.

I start up the PC, it asks the "Start the Computer Normally, Start in Safe Mode..." blah blah, you know what screen I am talking about. Whichever option I choose, it'll take me to the screen as if it'll load up. Then all of the sudden I get a blue screen with white text that says something about "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME"

I looked online for a solution and found one by putting in a windows xp boot disk, going to the recovery option and then typing in theses commands :

chkdsk /p
fixboot

and then Select yes, by hitting Y ... here's the kicker ... the 'b' button on my keyboard is broken, the only one on the keyboard that doesn't work, usually I use the on-screen keyboard but clearly in the recovery section it is dos-type prompt style and I am unable to use the on-screen keyboard. Any idea how I can type the command fixboot with a broken b button?

Any help is appreciated ... Thanks so much in advance.

Hi

A friend has given me a Toshiba Satellite Pro L300-155 laptop to take a look at.

It wont boot up!

It goes as far as a screen saying your last session was shut down blah blah blah do you want to start in

Hi

A friend has given me a Toshiba Satellite Pro L300-155 laptop to take a look at.

It wont boot up!

It goes as far as a screen saying your last session was shut down blah blah blah do you want to start in
safemode
safemode with networking
safemode with command prompt
last known good configuration
normal mode

whichever option you select it loads for a split second as far as the windows loading screen and then flashes up an error message screen too quick to be able to read!
And then restarts and this loop continues no matter which option I choose!

The bios showed the harddrive
but when I tried to run the recovery disc it said there was no hard drive connected.
I have ran knoppix from a cd and everything else appears to be working fine to the best of my knowledge!

I have today tried a new hard drive and this hard drive also shows up in the bios but when I run the recovery disc it again says that no hard drive is connected.

I really hope somebody can help me as I am stuck as to my next move

Thank You

Hello,

First of all, I'm not sure if I'm posting in the right section. If not, feel free to move the thread with my apologies.

Quote:

I have a Dell Computer - probably around 4 years old. A week ago, when I came home from work, their was a screen telling me I had an error and had to reboot. I thought it was no big deal - so I proceeded to reboot. When it started to boot up - all I heard was a clicking noise and then received this error:

Primary 0 drive not found

It gave me the option to press F1 to continue or F2 to run the setup utility

Either pressing F1 or F2, it brings me to the BIOS screen.

I looked though the setup section and under drive configuration it lists my Primary master drive as "unknown device"

In the boot sequence section as number 2 it says "Hard disk drive (not installed)

Anyone have any suggestions on what I should do? I'm concerned with trying to get some of the data off of the hard drive as well as whether it is really dead and if I need to buy a new hard drive.

While searching, I came across this thread. I'm having the exact same problem. The only difference is, my Dell Dimension is a 4600 and was made in 2003. Yes, it's old as the hills. At any rate, I've purchased a new harddrive for it already. The harddrive that came with it originally is a Maxtor 3.5 Series (DiamondMax Plus 8). The one I bought is a Western Digital WD Caviar SE WD2500JB. Honestly, I bought it about a year ago because I was having issues and thought the harddrive could be the problem. Only, I could never get it to install. I went to the installation site that was listed in the paperwork that came with the new harddrive. It seemed to physically hookup just fine, it would just never install.

Now, I just tried to do it again and the computer isn't detecting it. Any suggestions would be extremely appreciated.

Note that this is just a temporary fix. I intend to buy an entirely new computer at the beginning of the year. That's a good 3 to 4 months away, though, and I might as well use this new harddrive that's never been used.

Which brings me to my next question:

I don't much like Dell. They seem to be poorly made. I'd like for my next computer to last a while. Are there any particular brands of computers that are generally well-made at around a $1500-$1700 price range?

Thanks much
