Mark Cuban, the eccentric owner of the NBA's Dallas Mavericks, has a post in his blog this week suggesting a way to kill Google by paying the top one thousand most popular sites $1M each to leave the Google Index. He wonders if Rupert Murdoch's plan to leave the Google Index could mark the beginning of a full-scale exodus from Google, one which could be expedited with some cash payoffs from Microsoft. Now, I'm no legal expert, but it seems to me that such a ploy would not fly with the government, but for the sake of argument, let's say it would. Why would you want to wipe out Google?

Pay Me, Pay Me, Pay Me My Money Down

I'm sure Microsoft is looking for ways to choke Google. After all, that's what competitors do, but I'm not sure it's in a top web site's best interest to abandon Google, no matter how much cash is involved. If I'm getting a fair amount of traffic from Google, and I make a lot of money, would the million dollar bribe be enough to entice me to cut off that gravy train?

I suppose it's possible. After all a million dollars is not a trivial amount of money to most of us, and if it involved other enticements like placement guarantees and ad deals, it might look good. What's interesting is that the numbers involved in a scheme like this would probably not make a company like Microsoft flinch. Remember, Microsoft was ready to pay $45 billion at one point for Yahoo!.

Play Both Ends Against the Middle

Cuban's plan gets a little more interesting when he suggests that perhaps Google wouldn't stand still while its closest competitor tried to force the market away from its search engine. Maybe Google would up the stakes. After all, they have money too. Maybe the top sites could get Google into a bidding war with Microsoft, but would this be healthy for anyone except the companies that were the recipients of this largess? It probably wouldn't be great for smaller companies who wouldn't be worth the attention in a playing field that was now defined by cash payments.

Too Many Questions

But in the end, there are way too many questions left unanswered. Would Microsoft stock holders stand for this use of Microsoft cash resources in a scheme that still might not work? Would Google up the cash stakes, or more likely tie up such an approach in court for so many years that it wouldn't matter to most of us for a long, long time? Would the government stand by and watch this game without stepping in?

I'm not sure, but for me personally, I can't see the advantage of choking Google in this fashion, or if anyone would be willing to take the risk it would involve of leaving the world's most popular search engine, cash payments not withstanding. Google simply drives too much traffic and why kill the golden goose for spite?

You can always count on Rupert Murdoch, the cantankerous News Corp. chairman, for a good laugh and he didn't disappoint this week during an interview on Sky News Australia in which he boldly stated his sites would pull out of Google Search. In fact, he once again accused search engines of outright stealing his content.

Let's Examine The Facts, Shall We

Here's what Murdoch has to say about search engines:

Quote:

Sky News: You've been particularly critical of what you call 'the content kleptomaniacs' and the plagiarists. Are you particularly talking about Google here?
Murdoch: Well, the people who simply pick up everything and run with it and steal our stories...they just take them.
Sky News: Who?
Murdoch: There's Google. There's Microsoft, um Ask.com. There's a whole lot of people.

If you go to Google News and enter a search for News Corp (or anything you like), you see a list of headlines, which are live links, the publication name and a blurb. You don't see the full story or even a full paragraph. There is just enough there to make a decision and click through. I'm wondering what exactly Google is stealing here.

The Sky News interviewer, David Speers, goes on to ask Murdoch is that not just driving traffic to his web site (which by the way, most sane business people see as a good thing), and Murdoch admits that it's just a headline (where in the previous sentence he suggested they were stealing his content). So which is it, Rupert?

Saying Goodbye to Google

To his credit, the Speers asks Murdoch why he doesn't just block his sites from Google. And Murdoch, unbelievably (at least to me), says, "I think we will." In his view, he sees Google traffic as valueless (or at least not having enough value to make it worth his while to want it).

The Man Is a Walking Contradiction

Ultimately, Murdoch rambles, contradicts, and often makes little sense in this interview. In most instances, he shows a distinct lack of understanding how the web works (yet in his paradoxical way sees the end of print, perhaps with in 20 years, as part of our changing world). While Murdoch has grown a worldwide media empire from meager beginnings, and that's an impressive feat, the fact is that times have changed, and Murdoch can't seem to get his arms around the extent of the change.

At one point, he suggests that newspapers made a mistake by not charging on the internet from the beginning, which may be so, but that ship has sailed. He says, search engines steal his content, yet he admits that they don't. He says that they should charge for content, but he's not sure how to do that. He seems to get that the internet has changed everything, at least on some level, yet he doesn't understand how search engines would help him.

One thing is clear. He wants to return to the days of silos and the fact is that those days are over. Maybe the days of the huge media empires are over too and maybe that's a good thing for us all.

This may be unfair to low-bid bidders like us but it is fair to high-bid bidders. As you know, high-bid bidders ($.50 to $5 cpc) do not want you to bid for $0.03 to $0.10 cpc. They will loose money. This is the fair thing that Google do.

There are not only you, but millions of AdWords accounts got terminated because of poor quality landing pages.

So, if you want to use the cpc, then you have to try other companies.
Thoughts?

When you are dealing with a populations as large as China's, even when you take into consideration that three quarters of the population doesn't have internet access, you are still talking about a very large number of those who do. So it's no surprise that Google, Microsoft and Yahoo! want a piece of this rather large and likely growing pie.

So far at least though, it's not one of the big American search engines making the biggest impact in China. According to an article in this month's Forbes Magazine, it's Chinese search engine called Baidu that's a run-away number one.

Baidu is Local

According to the article, Baidu is a local firm started by a US educated entrepreneur by the name of Robin Li. What Li has been able to do is take control of the search market in China by marketing his search engine as a native tool that understands the language and culture better than any American company could. Li has managed to build a Google-like market share in the neighborhood of 65 percent of Chinese searches. Google has about half that, but according to Forbes is growing rapidly and putting pressure on Baidu. (It's worth noting that this PC world article reports that Google is much less successful than Forbes suggests.)

Treading Dangerously in Foreign Markets

While the Chinese market is tantalizing because of its size and potential for Herculean growth, it is also fraught with political and economic danger. The Chinese government has been known to try and control information now and again, and when that happens, Google (and other American search engines) are caught in a very awkward position trying to operate within the rules and customs of the local market, while not appearing to kowtow or cooperate with what many consider to be oppressive regimes.

In a March, 2009 Business Week article, writer Douglas MacMillan underscored this tension when he wrote:

Quote:

Big Internet companies that do business abroad often find themselves in a quandary. While at home they champion privacy and free speech rights, overseas they often have to play by rules that don't reflect those same freedoms.

It's not always an easy line to walk and American companies torn between supporting freedom and (as Jackson Browne once wrote) "the struggle for the legal tender" often find themselves in a moral pickle.

Worth the Struggle?

Ultimately for these companies, the prize of huge pay-per-click advertising revenue is worth the struggle. Interestingly, the market graph in the Forbes article shows Yahoo, number 3 but fading fast while Microsoft did not even make it on the chart, which suggests they have little presence, or at least not enough to warrant mention. Meanwhile, Li and his firm struggle with their own alleged ethical lapses (as Forbes reports) while Google continues to increase its Chinese presence and puts pressure on the reigning market champion.

This all goes to prove while it's well worth it for businesses, even small businesses, to expand beyond their local markets, it's not always an easy task even when you have the deep pockets of Google. Just because you're Number 1 in the US doesn't mean much when you crash the shores of a market giant like China. But even a small piece of that advertising market could make it worth the effort, and as you might expect, Google is going after it full bore.

PPC Ads definition

PPC is an acronym for Pay Per Click. PPC advertisement is a form of advertising where advertisers pay for visitors on cost per click basis.

Advertisers can also place PPC ads on search engines. PPC ads are also popularly known as sponsored listing. Note that the payment plan for sponsored listing may or may not be based on cost per click while PPC ads only follow cost per click payment model.

PPC ads appear at the top, right or bottom of SERPs of search engines that display organic rankings also.

Features of PPC Advertisement

PPC ads can immediately generate visibility for your website by getting you placed on SERPs of the desired keywords. Distinctively, PPC advertising is:

* Definite
* Flexible
* Low Risk

Because of these features PPC enjoys certain advantages over the other forms of online advertising. Some of these features are listed and discussed below.

PPC ads appear when you want

Instant Results

The results of PPC campaigns are instant. The ads go live immediately and can be modified, added or deleted at any time.

Easy implementation

PPC advertisement is an effective model and is easily implemented. PPC ads don’t require any modifications on the website and hence are an effective search engine marketing model for sites which are architecturally difficult to modify for SEO. For example even if you are site is in Frames, you can run a PPC campaign for the site and the ads would appear.

Google Ad Sense is when a web site owner opens an account with Google to place advertisement on their web site. When a person clicks this advertisement, the web site owner gets an average commission of .45 cents. A web site that gets a lot of traffic, they can easily make $150,000 per month.

There are message boards claiming to be informing the public about scams being done by companies or individuals. These web sites have individuals working for them for the sole purpose of targeting companies or individuals in order to generate traffic to the web site. This method is artificially generating traffic to the web site, this is FRAUD as outlined by Google. The higher the traffic, the higher the percentage of individuals that will click onto the Google advertisements.

Additionally, Individuals post copy right information about a company on these types of web sites; this is against the policy of the Google Ad Sense program.

If you believe that you are being targeted by individuals on a particular web site; simply click the Ads by Google in the bottom right hand corner of the advertisement on the web site. You will be taken to a Google page, click onto: Report a policy violation regarding the site or ads you just saw
File a report and the Google Fraud Department will investigate

News Story Google Europe Chief Suggests Publishers Take Responsibility

In a wide-ranging interview with the German Magazine Der Spiegel (http://www.spiegel.de/international/business/0,1518,644229,00.html)recently, the Head of Google Europe, Philipp Schindler, defended his company against the latest round of attacks from publishers who claim that Google is siphoning...

In a wide-ranging interview with the German Magazine Der Spiegel recently, the Head of Google Europe, Philipp Schindler, defended his company against the latest round of attacks from publishers who claim that Google is siphoning profits without creating content.

Truth be told, this argument is getting old and it suggests that the publishers themselves have abdicated any responsibility for their own lack of vision. The fact is that the newspaper industry has had years and years to deal with the internet and they never made any real attempt to rest control from Google, Craigslist or any of the other successful online ventures.

A Little History Lesson Might Help

If you consider that the web launched in the early 90s and commercialized by the mid-90s, that means that newspapers have had more than 15 years lead time. Also consider that the company they consider to be the big bad wolf of the internet, Google, didn't even exist before 1998 and didn't really become a force for several years after that.

Now consider that newspapers remained throughout the 90s, the main source of news and information. They had the content, but what they lacked was any foresight to take advantage of what was happening on the web. If you look at the web today, it's completely content-centric, yet newspapers whose main commodity has always been content have never been able to come up with creative solutions to deliver that content to the web while making money.

Take a Look in the Mirror

Fast forward to 2009 and the combination of the brutal worldwide recession, ad revenue sources moving online, falling readership rates and publishers leveraged with huge debt have come together with newspapers closing at an alarming rate. Also consider that modern Web 2.0 tools enable anyone with an internet connection and a computer to be a publisher and it has completely changed the dynamic of the industry.

Frustrated and angry at these changes, the industry desperately looks for blame and they see Google making big profits and vent at them, but is Google really the problem? Schindler to his credit is not completely unsympathetic, but he does suggest that newspapers have been slow to respond to obvious changes in the marketplace.

Quote:

"We understand publishers' fears. But it's not our fault that people have decided to consume media in a digital form. I would be pleased if publishers would take the energy they're investing in attacks on Google and use it to develop successful Internet business models instead."

What if There Were No Google

Schindler points out that if there were no Google, the picture wouldn't be very different. "And just imagine if there were no Google. Would the individual publisher then be better off? No; on the contrary," he says. And the fact is he's right. Google delivers traffic and it's up to the publishers to take advantage of that, but if Google weren't the premiere search engine of the day another would be in its place.

It's really high time that the publishing industry stopped blaming Google for building a successful business model. Perhaps the industry should redirect the anger at themselves. There are many who believed the 20th century delivery model would never die, that people would always be looking for that paper on the door step every morning and that would continue to be the way we consumed news. Unwilling to accept any responsibility for its own lack of vision, the newspaper industry continues to blame Google and force Google executives like Schindler to make excuses for being successful. And how twisted is that?

3.	Site Domain Names
Site Name on Masthead: ___________________________________________
Domain Name must be registered through your web hosting service and approved by a domain registration service before you can use it. You may check the availability of your domain name at Network Solutions (http://www.networksolutions.com).

6.	Navigation System
The navigation systems of all are basic website design packages include:

•	Links from the front page and sectional pages to every page in the system to enable Web search engines to “spider” and index content on every page.

•	Colored bar “Image Map” with a brief word or two indicating each page. This appears at the top or left side of every page. You are limited to a maximum of about eight (8) selections on this image map with the basic website design package.
-Optional Systems- Circle those you wish to be incorporated in your website.
•	Left-Side “Buttons” can be used, but we do not recommend them, since they are more expensive and time consuming to maintain when a change or addition is made to the system. Also, it takes significantly longer to load many buttons than an image map of the same area. (Extra charge)
•	Frames System where, typically, a scrolling menu remains on the left side to provide navigation. We do not recommend frames in practically any situation, since they are a design disaster. They do not always print out, cannot be bookmarked easily, and often make the page design look “tacky” with their ugly gray scroll bars. We see them as the amateur’s way to look cool. In a very few cases, they are useful (1) to display large databases of information, (2) purposely hide URLs of content pages, (3) send visitors to other sites while making it easy for them to come back. (Extra charge)
•	In site Search Engines are useful on larger sites of twenty or more web pages to help visitors quickly find what they are looking for. (Extra charge)
•	Dropdown menus, one for the best ways to have mass amounts of internal web pages display. Dropdown menus are strongly recommended for advanced website designs. (Extra charge)

7.	Basic Page Elements
These are the important items witch appear on nearly every webpage on your site (except the “home” page.)
•	Page titles which show in the web browser, tabs, and on favorite name.
•	Top-of-page graphic based on the design of the masthead graphic.
•	Page Title in larger type. Heading Font Style ___________________________ (we recommend Lucida Sans Unicode, Arial Bold, or Times New Rome)
•	Text. Body Font Style:_____________________________________________ (we recommend Lucida Sans Unicode, Arial Bold, or Times New Rome)

•	Navigation Bar Vertical or Horizontal
•	E-mail response link to the following e-mail address:
_______________________________________________________________
•	Copyright and trademark information in small print at the bottom of every page.
What registered trademarks, trademarks, and service marks does your company want to indicate here?

Do you have any trademarks or service marks? If so, please list them here and indicate which ones are registered trademarks are.

8.	Photos, Graphics, Animations, Sound, and Video
___ Other _________________________________________________________

10.	Web Hosting Service
We are not in the web hosting business. We recommend to our clients web hosting services tailored to their specific needs. We’ve worked with dozens of hosting services, the good, the bad, and the ugly. We usually do not recommend hosting on your local dial-up ISP, since they are not well-prepared to meet specialized business site hosting needs. Their main business is usually dial-up access, and hosting is only a sideline for them. Please let us recommend a Web host service for you. There is a mass amount of different web hosting services out there to pick from, but even some of the most expensive hosting serves might not be equipped to handle the specific needs of your site.
