My Education Path

This is my first year of college, I attend a community college called Ohlone. Right now of course I am focusing on getting my GE's done but I am not sure how to proceed with going with a major and transferring to a State college. I love working with computers, but I do not want to do any engineering or programming, I'm more of a IT/Support guy. What major do I choose? I'm kind of lost... help/assistant please.

Where's the $? I read that MIS majors average starting salary is $45-$50k/year. I have a B.A. and a Master's in MIS, 3.9 GPA in grad school, VP of MIS Society, many skills, and 25 certifications, including A+, Network+, Server+, MCP, and MCITP-Server Admin. Yet, I can not find a job in IT in Tampa for 8 months. I previously had a tech support job that paid $14/hr. Where are all the great salaries? What am I doing wrong? I feel I'm missing something...

Private vs. Public Graduate school

Hey all,

thanks for reading my post. I am a graduate student currently attending a little known public university. I was wondering if I could have some input as to a question that's literally tearing me up inside:

Do you think the it's worth it to go to a private graduate program in computer science that's highly ranked rather than a public, lower ranked program?

Some more info to help you answer: Everything will be taken out with loans... so we are looking at roughly $80,000 for the public school and $130000 for the private school as a worse case scenario (i.e. paying for living expanses with the loan). I want to look at worse case numbers because I always like to expect the worse, this way I am never disappointed :)

So let me know what you think guys? I know it's more about research than prestige BUT I understand a private school will usually have more research funding...

Do you think the extra money taken out is worth it? Do you think I should just maximize my education at the current school?

To get even more specific: I am currently in CUNY Brooklyn College but my grades and GRE scores will allow me to get into NYU oh and also I live with my girlfriend who doesn't want to move out of new york.

We have a few websites that allow their users to subscribe to SMS notifications when updates to the site are being made. The system will send out SMS notifications to the devices through the carriers SMTP gateway using the number@carrierpostfix address. What we need to know is if the addresses that is sending out SMS notifications have the potential of being marked and blocked as SPAM by the carriers because of the amount of notifications that are being sent out. If so, what can we do to prevent that?

Learning Curve in Web Programming VS Desktop Programming

I'd like to jump into the wonderful world of programming.

In the past I took some programming courses in school. These included C, C++, and Python.

And I started to learn PHP about a year ago, and I've also played around with Ruby on Rails.

Unfortunately I never did much with what I learned.

Now I'm looking to jump back in. I currently have a career in IT and consider myself a Linux geek-guru-wannabe.

I'm wondering what is the learning curve of desktop programming (eg C#/.Net) vs that of web programming (eg PHP/RoR/Javascript)?

And how long does it take to become a Jr Level developer on either platform?

I mainly ask because it seems that there are a million different frameworks and languages for web development these days.

Whereas if you develop on the desktop (Windows) environment, the primary language used is C# with the .Net framework.

Are there many paid opportunities out there for people who have experience developing on a *nix GUI desktop environment?

Any advice for if you were in my shoes?

Hello all,

I'm a SW developer, have been working in industry and research for 8 years, mainly coding in UNIC/C/C++. I'm currently working on a fixed term contract that ends in a year from now.

My skills in SW are obsolete, I think my market value is very low.

I want to change my orientation a little, and try something more marketable. I'm tired of development, I don't have the energy to learn new languages and frameworks etc. Any young college grad. can do it better.

So I'm thinking of going into IT security.

I have no past experience on IT security at all. I have to get training.

As I see it, my options are:

OPTIONS: 1. Enroll in a Univ. somewhere, get an MSc degree in IT security, online or with physical presence

2. Try to get the CISCO Security Professional certification.

MY QUESTION: Is there any other, better option? If not, which one of these two is the best, from your point of view?

I have no idea how to go about determining what I’m worth based on my qualifications. Here is the background; we have a client currently that has been with us for approximately 2 yrs and we have taken fabulous care of them. We have performed a technology review at the beginning of the year and they were aware that they need to upgrade their servers, etc. So far, they have not heeded our warnings regarding upgrading their equipment. We want to protect ourselves and have a form to eliminate the liability that could possibly arise from a catastrophic system failure. We have given them every opportunity to upgrade.

Any suggestions? We can't possibly be the only ones in this situation.

Hello, my name is Derek and I'm a geek. I've been playing with computers for about 10 years now. I'm 23 and I am not sure which area of IT I would like to specialize in. I hope some of you may have some advice for me.

Background
I convinced my parents to buy a computer in 1999. I spent all of my time on the computer and eventually learned how it worked and how to fix them. I learned HTML and had my first web page up at the age of 15. When I was 16 I started toying around with QBASIC and learned the very basics of programming. A year later I started learning the basics of VB and played with it for a little while.

When I was 17 I got my hands on a Linux disc (Mandrake 8!) and I have been a Linux / FOSS advocate ever since.

After high school I studied computer engineering for one year before dropping out to get a job. I enjoyed college, but I slacked off and fell way behind. I would not have dropped out if I could do it over again.***

After dropping out I got a job working as a remote Jr Linux system admin for a web hosting company in LA. That job was enjoyable however repetitive and very slow at times.

After about nine months of working as a remote jr linux admin I went to work for a Wireless ISP. I was mostly a tech support person, but I also got to go outdoors (tower climbing, customer installations) and play with a few servers.

After this I did some freelance computer work and web development for some clients around town.

CURRENT
I now work as an IT Technician for a medium-sized business in the city. I can't complain about the position, I get to do a little of everything.

Hence the problem - I am worried that if I continue doing a "little of everything" I'm never going to be really valuable and never really make a decent living at what I do.

I am interested (or maybe not interested) in too many topics. I'll list them below. I cannot pick one to concentrate on and learn.

I go back and forth from wanting to learn one thing from wanting to learn another. For example, I started to tackle a Testout Training CD for the CCNA Certification without finishing, then I started training on Win 2008 Server / Active Directory without finishing, and now I have a Learning C# book on my desk!

I'm interested in everything, however I realize I cannot do it all.

Running my own business has also been a dream for several years. But we're back to the fact that I'm not a specialist in anything and steady income is VERY important to me right now.

What Interests me:

I'm currently in the planning stages of starting an IT business and would like to elicit some advice. The business will be similar to a "Geek Squad" service that will focus on residential and small-business customers.

Services will include: virus/spyware removal, security tune-ups, hardware/software installation, networking, data backup/recovery, and training.

My questions are:

1. For troubleshooting and repairing systems, what are some good (free?) applications that I could carry with me on a thumb drive?

hi, i have an "easy" assignment due today and for the past several days i have been completely unable to run these questions without errors,

one is asking to create a function drop-units to take an integer of 10 or greater and produce a new integer by dropping units.
ex. drop-units 148 should produce 140
drop-units 234 should produce 230
drop-units 300 should produce 300

i have no idea where to even start any help would be greatly appreciated.

as well...a second question

i have to create a function monogram which takes two strings (in this case first and last names) and produces a monogram of the two.
ex. monogram barack obama should produce b.o.
monogram michael jackson should produce m.j.

Well... I am a sophomore in college and torn between choosing 1 of 2 majors.

Computer Science or Information Technology.

My financial situation isn't all that great, my parents are helping me out a lot, but they advise me on getting my degree and getting out into the 'real' work field as soon as possible.... which I completely understand.

Sadly, I love learning about computers... every aspect of them. If I had the choice I'd probably stay and take every class this university has to offer hahah, but that's a debt I do not even want to bring into reality.

Alas this is the year I must choose a major/minor and finish up my studies within the next 2-3 years.

Right now my idea is... Major: IT Minor: MIS(management information systems) .... do you think it would be beneficial to add in a minor of Comp Sci?

Just wondering what opinions/thoughts you all had on the degrees and if you had any advice to give through your various experiences.

I really hope I'm posting this in the right forum. This is my first post and I hope I don't bother or offend anyone. Please excuse my newbieness.

Here goes: I want to write a children's ebook that would feature the ability to click on any word to hear it's pronunciation. Also, I want the child to be able to read along with the audio. This means that the words would need to be highlighted in time to audio pretty much like in karaoke.

I searched the internet for days looking for programs and tutorials... I've emailed ebook maker companies... I've downloaded and played around with Adobe trial versions of Flash, After Effects, Dream Weaver, Acrobat. Griffin Technologies' iKaraoke TunePrompter comes the closest for syncing text to audio. And believe it or not Power Point comes the closest to inserting sound and music as well as the ability to record sound.

There is a children's ebook website SNIP that does EXACTLY what I'm looking for. I emailed them too but so far I haven't gotten a response.

Could someone please help me? I look forward to any and all responses.

Its so damed confusing and difficult to use. I spent three days trying to install something on my Fedora 11 machine that would take me no more than about 10 minutes in Vista (or any other version of MS-Windows). As an example: wxWidgets. I couldn't even successfully compile their online Hello World tutorial because of uninstalled extra packages. Then after installing more packages using yum program, tried to compile Hello World and the g++ compiler couldn't find some include files. So I used find command to locate the header files and created a makefile to set -I flags for the include directories. That finally worked, but now I get trillions of undefined variables error messages. From this short experience it is no wonder that more *nix programmers don't commit suicide!

As for Vista: the same Hello World tutorial compiled without errors or warnings in about 15 minutes using VC++ 2008 Express. And not much more than that using Code::Blocks.

Hi people, my first post here. Please bear with me. I just wanna know your opinion about this situation
if someone says to you that the security of an operating system is built on the hardware mechanism that separates user mode from kernel mode which means that an attack that succeeds against one operating system must have broken the hardware mechanism, and therefore the same attack will work against any other operating system on the same type of machine. Thus there can't be any reason to believe that one operating system is more secure than any other.

How would you counteract his invalid argument?

MBA for a technical career?

I'm currently a software engineer and looking at staying within the technical/programming IT field for the forseeable future. I'd like to do an MBA to increase my knowledge of businesses/commerce in general. For instance being able to understand the economy much better, finance/stock market or how companies operate.

A career change isn't what I want and the roles I'm expecting to get are along the lines of senior software developer, senior software architect, etc. I don't wish to be an IT manager or CIO so as I said---technical roles only.

What I'm concerned about is that for senior technical roles, a masters in CS might be seen as an appropriate masters vs an MBA. If I wanted to be an IT project manager then yes, an MBA might be more suitable.

Another reason I'm against masters in CS is unless you work for orgs like NASA, you wouldn't need any of the advanced subjects in a masters. I find that even in senior technical roles, undergrad CS degrees are more than enough. Let's not forget that probably 90% of software development roles out there are not with research companies.

I wanna do an MBA but would it work to my disadvange?

I am presently working as System Admin. But i've not done graduation. I have done MCSE and CCNA training but didn't go for certification.

Now I think graduation is waste of time and I should go for international Certifications. What you guys suggest?

At times i feel im going nowhere, like no future at all of this windows platform and loosing interest in this platform. So just wanted to ask what else i can do to secure my future, more interesting and where i cud use some of my brains.
