THE PAGING GAME

Rules

1. Each player gets several million things.

2. Things are kept in crates that hold 2048 things each. Things in
the same crate are called crate-mates.

3. Crates are stored either in the workshop or warehouse. The workshop is
almost always too small to hold all the crates.

4. There is only one workshop but there may be several warehouses.
Everybody shares them.

5. Each thing has its own thing number.

6. What you do with a thing is to zark it. Everybody takes turns zarking.

7. You can only zark your things, not anybody else's.

8. Things can only be zarked when they are in the workshop.

9. Only the Thing King knows whether a thing is in the workshop or in a
warehouse.

10. The longer a thing goes without being zarked, the grubbier it
is said to become.

11. The way you get things is to ask the Thing King. He only gives out
things in multiples of eight. This is to keep the royal overhead down.

12. The way you zark a thing is to give it thing number. If you give the
number of a thing that happens to be in a workshop it gets zarked right
away. If it is in a warehouse, the Thing King packs the crate containing
your thing back into the workshop. If there is no room in the workshop, he
first finds the grubbiest crate in the workshop, whether it be yours or
somebody else's, and packs it off with all its crate-mates to a warehouse.
In its place he puts the crate containing your thing. Your thing then gets
zarked and you never knew that it wasn't in the workshop all along.

13. Each player's stock of things have the same numbers as everybody else's.
The Thing King always knows who owns what thing and whose turn it is, so you
can't ever accidentally zark somebody else's thing even if it has the same
number as one of yours. (VS/2)

Notes

1. Traditionally, the Thing King sits at a large, segmented table and is
attended to by pages (the so-called "table pages") whose job it is to help
the king remember where all the things are and who they belong to.

2. One consequence of Rule 13 is that everybody's thing numbers will be
similar from game to game, regardless of the number of players.

3. The Thing King has a few things of his own, some of which move back and
forth between workshop and warehouse just like anybody else's, but some of
which are just too heavy to move out of the workshop.

4. With the given set of rules, oft-zarked things tend to get kept
mostly in the workshop while little-zarked things stay mostly in a warehouse.
This is efficient stock control.

5. Sometimes even the warehouses get full. The Thing King then has to start
piling things on the dump out back. This makes the game slower because it
takes a long time to get things off the dump when they are needed in the
workshop. A forthcoming change in the rules will allow the Thing King to
select the grubbiest things in the warehouses and send them to the dump in
his spare time, thus keeping the warehouses from getting too full. This
means that the most infrequently-zarked things will end up in the dump so
the Thing King won't have to get things from the dump so often. This should
speed up the game when there are a lot of players and the warehouses are
getting full.

for a specific language, that poses a unique problem. This way people can practice, and others can learn maybe something new from someone else's idea. What do you guys think ? For example in our
C++ section, we can have a C++ challenge question. And people can participate in it. I know I would like to know other people solutions
to a problem. That way it will help me think in different ways.

I am the kind of person who is easily distracted while reading from a screen, and so I would like to ask fellow daniweb members about the best books for computer related topics. I consider my level to be intermediate in some fields, and beginner in others.
Some books are de facto standards in a certain technology field, others can be classified as Hidden Gems, while others are Interesting Reads (like GUI Bloopers). Therefore, I would love to hear what is everybody's book recommendation in the following fields:

Which introduced OOP in their operating systems first? For example, I'm working on an assignment and writing about OOP and I'm going to say something like:

"Microsoft, introduced OOP on their operating system first unlike Apple. This meant that the programming of the software became much cheaper to programme because of re-use and other techniques."

I don't know though. I have read somewhere that Steve jobs did visit a lab in which he was shown OOP and ignored it and was fascinated in GUI but I thought there was other reasons why Microsoft became the leader.

This question covers Windows only. I know Microsoft makes a wide variety of other software products (Office, Exchange, etc.), I'm not interested in them, only in the Desktop Operating Systems.

First - unlike the most of you, I've read Microsoft's financial reports, and understand accounting. I know how much money Microsoft has on hand, and how unlikely this scenario is. I'm asking the question to find out what people currently think are their best options, if Windows is no longer available.

Second - this is not a troll. I know there are a lot of Windows fans here. I'm not trying to insult you. I'm asking what you would do in a theoretical situation.

Easy to learn (simple grammar).

Use a simple alphabet (no umlauts please).

How to go about it?
That's where you come in.
It seems to me we need to stop the rotation first, in order to apply directional force to change the orbit. I'm thinking many large rocket engines arranged along the equator (Fusion powered, of course).
Once the rotation is stopped, swivel the same rocket engines to apply force in the appropriate direction until an orbit similar to Earth's is achieved.

Well i have been following the google OS (where in work is still going on ) for a pretty long time and when i have been through their whitepapers where they mentioned about SPDY protocol (which is an extension of TCP/IP and not to mention pretty faster than the conventional standards ) and they happen to claim to boot the whole OS in 7 seconds... (which is really very fast...! )
Will such uncanny features of google OS give a severe blow to Micro$oft windows 7 and their future os....?

How I filled my harddrive in weeks

This morning I woke up and went to my computer like normal and saw a boolean message saying my harddrive has limited space. So I went to the Windows Explorer and check drive C properties and it said I had zero bytes of free space. I thought ok, maybe I have a virus or that dehashing table cron job might have a slight effect on it. So I tried a virus scan and there wasn't enough free space to do a virus scan. So to gain some space I emptied the mysql dehashing database as it could easily be repopulated and my computer froze for a little while. After that my computer started responding and I check the free space on my computer then suddenly I had 116GB of free space. This database was just for a reverse lookup of hashes that has been populating 24/7. Didn't realize it would populate so fast as I only want to upload 25GB of that database. The rest was there for nothing. Now I can use the computer like normal and I learnt the hard way I need to have a space validator on my script.

Thought I would share this story just like the one where a person put their credit card in a floppy drive to make a payment.

Creating apps for the iPhone and the 'Droid

I got interested in writing these small apps, so I started with C++; my next class will be doing C++ for object-oriented programs. After that, it looks like I'll have to go slideways and take an iTunes University course from Stanford, because they're the only ones I know of that actually teach the language used on the iPhone, Objective C.

I notice a few comments on Google's new language, Go. Is that another language that can be used to write these apps, and which is better, and where do people learn them?

Hi and have been thinking about the big bang and wonder how did it all really start. Was it really like this theory or the effect of somebody doing an intergalactic experiment in the parallel universe. So many theories some based on science some based on religion and yet there seems to be no true answer. Most scientists say it started with two gas particles colliding at supersonic speeds. However how were these gas particles created - perhaps by god farting.

I believe in the theory of gods fart created the universe where in the Pegasus galaxy life was immediately created and that life (Atlantians) explored the universe creating other species and Stargates that the US is probably hiding or hasn't found then life from the Pegasus galaxy had eventually been transfered to Earth via Stargate. Also since the universe is always expanding you will find that the universe would have been relatively small back then. So what is your theory?

EXCEL Formula Question

I am trying to enter the following formula but I am coming up blank.

Ok, I have excel 2007.

I created a purchase order. On the purchase order I am trying to calculate multiple sales tax possibilities depending on which state I place in the State cell.

The 3 cells I am working with are: State "C5", Sub Total "D5", and Sales Tax "E5".

When I place "CA" in "C5" I want "E5" to calculate "D5" * 9.75%,
when I place "LA" in "C5" I want "E5" to calculate "D5" * 8.75%,
and when I place any other initials besides those 2 above in "C5" I want "E5" to calculate "D5" * 4.00%

Can someone please walk me through that particular formula?

NASA caught napping twice in 2 months

In October 2009 , one asteroid of radius 10 meters came very close to earth to the point that in a city of indonesia , fire balls were visible which resulted from asteroif getting burnt , even in november another huge asteroid came as close as few thousand miles to earth and in both this occasion NASA did not have any prior information about these asteroids .

Do you still believe NASA's tall claim that if any asteroid is with collision path with earth , NASA will know it 25 years before the collision actually happens.

I was looking at some of the 'choke points' for maritime traffic and noticed that I can see all the tankers lining up to and from the Suez Canal in the Mediterranean - can't see any traffic to or from the Red Sea. Heck - can't see anything til The Gulf of Oman. (I discovered this site just in case you want to know what's up with your order from China). They have even turned off the webcams for both the Suez and Panama Canals. Those darned pirates.

Is it legal?

Hi,
Just a technical question on what is legal and what is not. I buy a printer, lets say a cannon, and after a while the black ink runs out, can I legally refill the cartridge as I bought it and it is mine? Or because it is a registered product o9f Cannon, do I have to buy new from Cannon? I understand that using a refill will void the warranty, but is is legal?
I buy a new printer from Epson and I set it up with continuous ink system, is this legal?
The way I see it is if I buy the product, it is mine and I can do what I want with it and after I modify it I can sell it like that. But, if I buy a program and modify it, I could not sell it as it is not mine even thought I bought it as I only bought a copy of the program not the program. Therefore, do I but the printer or just a copy? Do I own the rights to modify that printer, throw it in the garbage or sell it again? (I am not into selling modified printers, just asking.)
I have my thoughts so I am not interested in what you think, only what you may know to be legal or not. It would never happen but I could not stand up in court and say well I did it because *#^&* said he thought it was legal.

This is VERY SCARY..... I heard on Alex Jones last night that if this goes thru (Dec 31st this year) you will be VERY RESTRICTED on what supplements you can have and HOW MUCH PER DAY!!

Some examples of potential permissible safe levels of nutrients under Codex include [2]:

* Niacin - upper limits of 34 mcg daily (effective daily doses include 2000 to 3000 mcgs).

* Vitamin C - upper limits of 65 to 225 mcg daily (effective daily doses include 6000 to 10000 mcgs).

* Vitamin D - upper limits of 5 µg daily (effective daily doses include 6000 to 10000 µg).

* Vitamin E - upper limits of 15 IU of alpha tocopherol only per day, even though alpha tocopherol by itself has been implicated in cell damage and is toxic to the body (effective daily doses of mixed tocopherols include 10000 to 12000 IU).

My question is: WILL WE BE ABLE TO GET AROUND THIS IF IT DOES GO THRU??

In other words if you wanna take 1000 µg daily of Vit D and its limited to 5 µg capsules,could you not take 200 capsules to equal 1000??

The six minute video clip is a bit hoaky (particularly Schmidt's attempts at humor) but there are some interesting takeaways from this interview, like:

figuring out how to rank real-time info is "the great challenge of the age."
broadband will be comfortably faster than 100MB (at least for the Western world).
distribution distinctions between TV, Radio and the web will go away.
Today's teenagers, who seamlessly jump from app to app, are a model of how the web will work 5 years from now.
Content will move more towards video (no surprise here really)

i have a question. why, why do parents go completely Physico about sex. lik wen it comes to their kids, some parents just go skitz. Every time i date a guy my parents want to meet him strate away and they are so judgemental and they give him the hole "you dont touch my daughter lik that, and you just keep it away" and all of that.. then wen u do have sex and tell them that youve done it, they just lose it and your made out t be the biggest slut known to man kind.

At the moment i have a bf of whom i am really really close wit and he wants to do "it" and i do too, but i keep puttin ot off coz of my parents. forstly coz they dont really let me go out much so me and my bf dont relly get the chance to be alone and secindly, if i did and then told them, i would be grounded forever and never allowed to see my bf again..

so my question is what am i suppose to do??? i really need some help with this one!!!

I heard on the radio today that the trial in the Court of appeal (The second highest judicial instance in Sweden.) against Pirate Bay will be postponed until sometimes next year. This is because two persons in the court has been reported as challengeable by the lawyer of the prosecuted, Per E Samuelsson.

Both court member Ulrika Ihrfelt and judge Kristina Boutz has been active members in copyright associations. The supreme court (The highest judicial instance in Sweden.) must look at this before the trial starts and they do not have the time to do that before 12:th November, when the trial was supposed to start.
