Welcome to the April DaniWeb Digest

keeping the community informed…

This month our sponsor is ComputerJobs.com, an online job board with more than 13 years experience in connecting thousands of high-tech employers with millions of qualified job seekers. Their mission is a simple one: to be the first place on the internet that technology professionals visit when looking for computer-related jobs, career information and industry resources.

At ComputerJobs.com thousands of active job vacancies are categorized by skill set and/or location, making it easy for job seekers to find the right position for them. A resume upload feature allows potential candidates to post their resumes for free, giving employers the ability to be able to find them easily and quickly. If you are looking for a job in the IT industry there is now an extra incentive to post your resume on ComputerJobs.com, because until April 30, 2008, DaniWeb members adding a new resume using this link will have the opportunity to win an iPod Touch.

Remember, by supporting our sponsors you are supporting DaniWeb and ensuring that it remains a free service.

User tip of the month

helping us to help you…

It is always important to keep an eye on the community rules here at DaniWeb, for members old and new, because we do change them every now and then to ensure that the community is best served at all times. One of the things that we get a lot of queries about, and our moderating team spends a lot of time dealing with, is spam. When we talk about spam we don't just mean the obvious 'buy a mobile phone here' or 'prescription drugs for sale' type postings that you might expect. We also mean postings which "advertise, plug your website, or engage in any other type of self promotion." Indeed, it is strictly prohibited to refer to sites you own or are affiliated with outside of specifically designated forums within the IT Water Cooler category (Hardware Swap, Post your Resume, Project Partners Wanted, Show Off your Projects, and Website Reviews forums, as well as all forums contained within the Webmaster Marketplace.) You should note, however, that only the direct sale of unique (ie one-of-a-kind) items or services are permitted within the aforementioned forums. Which means that only items within the seller's immediate possession may be sold or traded.

Please do not link to off-site eCommerce sites or auctions, and remember that no affiliate links are permitted anywhere within DaniWeb - other than within forum signatures that is. So if you do wish to promote your own website, business or pretty much anything you like as long as they do not contradict any other rules (such as inappropriate language or content) you can do so within your signature. And to edit that signature all you have to do is go to your Control Panel and look for the Settings and Options menu on the left of the screen, select Edit Signature and the rest is very straightforward.

Member of the month

every month one member makes the DaniWeb hall of fame…

Please welcome our newest member of the DaniWeb hall of fame, Ezzaral has been helping out around the DaniWeb community since May 2007 and can be found in the PHP and Geeks' Lounge forums. However, it is in the Java forum where he has become a well known name, and where no less than 1205 of the 1884 messages he has posted since joining can be found. This posting virtuoso can now add 'Featured Poster' to his DaniWeb credits, and we though we would find out what makes him tick:

Where are you from and how old are you?
37 and from Oklahoma, USA

What is your occupation?
I am a software developer.

How did you come up with your username?
"Ezzaral" is a fictitious name I've used for various RPG characters over the years. Any implied nationality or religion is merely coincidental, as I just made up the name for an "archaic" sense.

What is your favorite computer and why?
I'm not really a hardware guy, but I've favored self-built AMD systems for the most part.

What first brought you to DaniWeb, and why do you stay here?
I stumbled across it searching on something for work, but I really enjoy helping people with programming issues when I have the time. I stay because I also think helping out with things outside my daily scope of work keeps my thinking more agile and sometimes leads me to look further into some areas of the API that I don't use as frequently or at all. Sort of like mini brain-teasers I suppose.

So what is your favourite forum and why?
Java, as that is the area I have the most experience with. I spent a little time over in the PHP forum when I was teaching myself the language and building a small app for a local charity, but the Java forum takes up most of the extra time I have to devote to helping with questions.

Do you have any interests outside of IT and outside of DaniWeb?
I enjoy fishing with my wife, reading, working outdoors around the house, and MMORPGs in my spare time.

Can you think of the one best thing about DaniWeb and the one thing you would change if it were in your power?
It's a friendly community of people willing to spend quite a bit of their time helping others out with their technical issues for no real tangible reward - they just enjoy helping out. As far as something I would change, nothing really springs to mind at the moment.

Happy 10th birthday, MP3 players

by newsguy

Do you remember the MPMan F10 which was launched way back in March 1998? Probably not, which is a shame as it was a hugely important, and rather huge, device in the overall scheme of things. The first MP3 player, 10 years old this month, is fondly remembered in detail here.
