DaniWeb Downtime
we'll be back, better than ever...

We appreciate that for many of you DaniWeb is more than just an IT support community: it's almost an addiction. Which is why we are sorry to have to warn you that over the course of the forthcoming Labor Day weekend (September 4th to 7th) there will be some significant DaniWeb downtime, It is anticipated that there will be something in the region of two hours when DaniWeb will be totally down, followed by an additional full day of intermittent downtime within the blogs and code snippets.

So what's going on then? Well that's the good news: DaniWeb is being upgraded. Don't worry, it will retain the same look and feel that you have come to know and love, but behind the scenes we will be improving site stability and squashing bugs. "The biggest additional feature would be the ability to tag forum threads (tag clouds, etc), a feature that's already available in our blogs, but with a cool AJAX-ey twist" DaniWeb founder and chief coder Dani Horowitz explains. "We've made the massive leap from vBulletin 3.6.0 to vBulletin 3.8.4 - and for the non-vB experts out there, that's just over two years of versions" Dani continues, adding "what's left are the blogs and code snippets. While the current plan is for them to look and function the same to the end user, the actual entries themselves are going to be migrated out of my custom-coded solution and into the forum system." Which means that they will be as feature rich as the forum threads, and moderators will have as much flexibility with them as they currently do with forum threads making them easier to manage. Expect to see things like inline images for the news blogs, for example, and attachments for code snippets.

Once again, we apologize for the planned downtime but hope you will agree with us that the upgrade has been worth it after the event. Be sure to let us know what you think by posting in the Community Feedback forum!

Discovering DaniWeb in depth
the social side of tech...

Did you know that there is more to DaniWeb than just being a great place to get help when you need it with your programming questions or those IT-related problems that are driving you mad? We like to think that we have the friendliest and most knowledgeable IT support community online, that goes pretty much without saying. But have you thought about using DaniWeb as a social networking site, for example?

The key to unlocking the social side of DaniWeb is participation, and to get started you need to click on the cartoon head towards the top right of your DaniWeb screen. This will transport you to our Community Center from where you can access the Community Introductions forum (come say hello, we do not bite!) and the lounges. Ah yes, the lounges. The IT Professionals' Lounge is the place to meet other professionals in an informal environment in order discuss IT industry careers, or maybe chat about the latest technologies from a business perspective. The Geeks' Lounge is even more informal yet, and geared much more towards fun and relaxation with your peers and fellow community members alike. As long as it does not break the member rules you can chat about pretty much anything you like here. There's even a Posting Games sub-forum which is dedicated to wordplay and other text based posting games.

But wait, there's more. You can keep up to date with DaniWeb site news and community announcements, or maybe just let us have your opinion about the place, in the Community Feedback forum. You can even build a mini social network of your won by using the Contact List feature from your User Control Panel which enables you to connect with those members who you associate with the most. And finally, remember to complete your profile so that other members can find out a little more about you. After all, isn't that what being part of a community is all about?

DaniWeb Hall of Fame
introducing another deserving 'member of the month'

Please welcome our newest member of the DaniWeb hall of fame, jholland1964. A member of DaniWeb for just over a year, and with 2500 posts leading to 148 solved threads and 525 reputation points under her belt already, she is a deserving candidate for member of the month status. Want to know where to find this hard working member of the DaniWeb community? That's easy, just hang around the Viruses, Spyware and other Nasties forum and you are bound to bump into her as she helps folk to rid their computers of malware and viruses. When not doing her computer detective thing, jholland1964 will likely be busy helping the DaniWeb Moderators by reporting spam and other 'bad' posts. Let's get to know the latest DaniWeb member to be awarded a Featured Poster badge a little better...

Where are you from originally, and where do you live now?

I was born and raised in a mid-American town in Indiana. Lived here all my life.

How old are you?

I am 63 years old. Happily married for 43 years. We have two daughters, four grandchildren aged 6 to 18. Oldest will enter college in a few weeks and the youngest will be a 1st grader.

What is your current occupation, and have you ever done anything unusual in the past?

I guess you can say I am retired. Stayed home for many years until our girls were in school then I worked about 13 years as a manager of a school cafeteria.

What is your favorite computer and OS?

I prefer Windows, mainly because that is what I have the most experience with, though I have used a Mac occasionally but do prefer Windows. I have a desktop and prefer that but have used my daughter's laptops quite often. I could probably get used to one and like it if I had more access.

What first brought you to DaniWeb?

PhilliePhan and I were frequent posters and helpers at another forum which had come into hard times and losing members, he suggested that I register at DaniWeb as he was a member here and regular poster at that time. I took his advice and have been here ever since.

What makes you stay here?

I really enjoy the variety of people, the various problems we encounter here, which often leads to research which I love to do.

What is your favorite forum and why?

I thoroughly enjoy Viruses, Spyware and other Nasties. Guess it is the excitement of the "hunt" and then the ability to actually see when you've made a difference. Guess it makes me feel good when I know somebody has posted with a problem and many times lots of frustration and concern that their computer is beyond help and after our work they walk away with a smooth running machine and are please that they could do it themselves.

What are your interests outside of IT and outside of DaniWeb?

I love to travel, spending time with our kids and grandkids. I love sports, football and basketball. I have a real interest in politics and government, have since I was a teen.

Name the best thing about DaniWeb, and one thing you would change if it were in your power?

One thing is the variety of people who come here, from all over the world. This is one thing that never ceases to amaze me, the power of the internet which puts you in contact with others who are thousands of miles away and in just an instant. Truly amazing. I honestly cannot think of anything I would change about DaniWeb.

Any fascinating facts about yourself that you would like to share with the DaniWeb community?

Cannot think of a thing fascinating about myself. I am just an ordinary mid-western lady who loves computers. I am self-taught, never took a computer class in my life, what little I know I learned from using the computer, from some original Gateway techs when I received my first Windows 95 computer. I think the key thing they taught me was it is pretty hard to break your computer as long as you are patient and take your time. Those are the rules I try to always follow when working on a computer and now try to instill in others.
