Hello Daniweb,

I am planning on moving a telephone socket downstairs so that I can move the router from the back corner of a granite house into the middle of it, so hopefully the wireless signal shall be better for everyone.

In the house there are two telephone lines, one which is used solely for telephone calls and the other which is used for a mix between telephone and supplying broadband. The line which is supplying broadband has it's master, and only socket in the top corner of the house, which is where the router is at present (shall call it Socket1 from now on).

I have an "Extension Kit for NTE5 Line Box" and I was wondering whether wiring this up to the current master socket, dropping it through the eaves and running it to the more suitable location with a face plate would mean I can then attach an ADSL filter and use it as I would normally?

Is this how it works (I wouldn't be doing the wiring, I would use a telecomms engineering, but hopefully someone can tell me whether or not it is even worth phoning them)?
Would there be any significant interferance and/or line quality issues for using this method for broadband?

And finally, the age old question... who actually owns the Master Socket? Me or my telecomms provider?

Thank you

Hello Daniweb,

I've recently become interested in networking, especially the administrative side of it (monitoring them, managing and resolving faults etc.) and therefore I thought one of the best ways I could learn was to see what was actually happening on them.

I installed Wireshark for Ubuntu, and everything seems to work fine when monitoring my own traffic. The problem I am facing is, when setting the Wireless Adaptor to 'Monitor' mode so that I can view what is happening on the rest of my network, it shall run for a couple of seconds before crashing with the error:

Unknown message from dumpcap, try to show it as a string: Can't restore interface wlan0 wireless mode (SIOCSIWMODE failed: Operation not permitted).
Please adjust manually.

and

The network adapter on which the capture was being done is no longer running; the capture has stopped.

I don't really know what the problem is, the Wireshark output is just filled with tens of thousands of messages from a wireless printer before the adapter fails. If I end it manually before the adapter crashes, it shall still show up with the same errors.

My guess is it can't put it back into Managed mode, however I don't know why it crashes when running.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you

Here's a fun problem for you geniuses who know SharePoint and networking.

We upload videos to our SharePoint site. Regardless of the size, when we play it here at the corporate office, it will play about 20 seconds in and then reset to zero and you would have to refresh the page.

If you try to download the file, it will race until 70% complete and the slow the F down and then (in Chrome) say "Failed - Network Error" and in IE it says "The [file name] download was interrupted."

When downloading or watching videos outside of our network, it works fine.

What settings or where in our network would you all look to begin troubleshooting this issue?

Thanks!

hello, Tcll here
(havn't been able to login, I'm on wii)
^ can repeatedly click the "member login", it does nothing.

before I get into detail with my current situation, let me explain what led up to this.

you may, or may not have heard of this before, but I was infected with the rootkit "ZeroAccess".
this was a particularly difficult infection to remove,
and following the process of using about 6 different programs didn't change a thing,
and actually complicated things even more.

out of the 6, ComboFix was the most effective at restoring my compy,
but it still failed to remove the rootkit itself.
I used TDSS Killer which also found the rootkit, and described it as being "ipsec.sys".

unfortunatly though, after deleting that, I also lost the ability to use TCP/IP,
and my firewall constantly returned an error.
though ComboFix and TDSS Killer no longer reported the rootkit.

this is quite a pain to deal with as:
- Visual Studio can't run/debug, and the interactive interpreter gets stuck in a processing loop
- Eclipse can't report anything and is only a bit more useful than IDLE
- and of course we all know about running IDLE w/o -n

so my current dev setup is using VS (would like to use Eclipse), while using IDLE -n to debug.

I've tried many attempts at reinstallig TCP/IP but have made no success.
I've pretty much lost hope now...
(have been developing like this for months)

can anyone help??
I can't even use IE(8) other than for local web pages.
(I've also tried FF with similar results)

Hi, I am using Cisco RV180W Small Business routers in our company with 12 locations plus 1 corporate office.

Currently, the setup looks like this:
Each of our stores' router connects with an IPsec connection to the router of the company who hosts our POS data and software (its an old AS400 system). I have the values from the company to put into the routers (FQDN, preshared key, encryption types, etc). The stores each have their own subnet (Store 1: 10.148.1.1; Store 2: 10.148.2.1; etc..), and when the IPsec tunnel is up, then we are able to use 10.0.0.9 as the Host on our terminal program to access the AS400, and it is as if we are right on their network.

The issue with this system is that now we are starting to use computers instead of just terminals, and we need to be able to share files, and remote desktop easily. I'm making it work, but its a little complicated and requires me connecting with PPTP to each store that I need to remote connect to (one at a time).

I would like to maintain this IPsec tunnel connection from each store to the POS company, but also have each store connected to each other. Each store should maintain it's own subnet just as it is now, but I want to be able to do some things like local shares from one computer designated as the file, VNC connections, and be able to do all of this just as if we were all on the same network (even though all stores are on different subnets.), from whichever store I might be at.

I'm not sure how to get this accomplished. I don't want to have to connect EVERY store to EVERY other store, is there a way to do this with just one VPN record on the router? I'm not even sure if the routers would accept 12 incoming connections or not.

Also, if it is possible to do this while connecting all 12 stores with one tunnel into the corporate office, how do I go about that setup? I have done the setup several times with the values provided by the POS company, but I don't know what the setup looks like on the receiving end of the tunnel.

Any help is appreciated! Thanks in advance!

I was struggling to find a good place to put this one, should it go in the Linux forums, should it go in the Windows forums? Anyway, networking seemed like as good a place as any so here goes:

I'm currently setting up a SAMBA file server which I am planning to use for backups. The problem is, the moment I try and restrict access to a folder it locks me out completely, I shall post my smbd.conf file to show you what I mean:

[global]

    workgroup = WORKGROUP
    security = user

[PublicFiles]

    comment = Public File Shares
    path = /home/FileShares/Public
    browsable = yes
    guest ok = yes
    read only = no
    writeable = yes
    create mask = 0755

[Alexander]

    comment = File Shares for Alexander
    path = /home/FileShares/Alexander
    browsable = yes
    valid users = alexander
    guest ok = no
    read only = no
    writeable = yes
    create mask = 0755

I can connect to the PublicFiles share and view content in the folder, however if I try to connect to the share 'Alexander' it won't allow me and gives the error "Access Denied". The same thing happens if I try to modify or add a file to the PublicShares. I have setup a SAMBA user, and the password is correct however I don't know what I am doing wrong.

It is an Ubuntu 12.04 server, trying to connect to it with Windows 7

Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.

Thanks

I am getting opposite answers on this matter so I am asking on this forum.

I was curious on how would I proceed if I wanted to install several 100ft runs of Cat5E aerial rated STP outdoor with messenger cable.

This kind of cable, http://bit.ly/11rn6DS.

What is recommended in this situation, terminating both ends of the cable with a shielded keystone jack ?

Do I also need to put a shielded patch panel in the center building if all the the runs are originating from it ? Think of it like its a star topology, the modem and router is in the center building and I need to connect 5 other buildings to the center one.

The installation technician says that my cable don't have to be surge protected since its shielded. The drops should be installed in each building with shielded keystone jacks.

Opinions are one some forums that I should use cat5e ligthning protectors outside each buildings.

My wife and I have just moved into the annex of a friend's house. Since our phone/broadband hasn't been installed yet because of complications we are using our friend's Internet through home plugs and LAN cables which has worked fine for me and my Mac Mini and obviously because of the LAN link no passwords were needed. No problems from the word go. But, apart from a short window of time when it worked, my wife's laptop now refuses to connect to the Internet by any of her browsers: Chrome, Firefox and Explorer and comes up with the Error 105 message on Chrome, her main browser. We are using exactly the same system of home plugs as we used in our previous home, and I've checked that her LAN cable and home plug are working fine. I know nothing about DNS etc so I'm stuck. What next please?

Hello. As a Software Engineer I admit a slight lack of knowledge with hardware. I am usually quite good with any hardware that is contained within the case, my issues lie in networking. Usually I fix my own computer problems, but now I have a couple networking problems that I frankly have no idea how to solve. I am wondering if anyone here can solve them:

1) My laptop cannot connect to the internet at all while in windows mode. When I "troubleshoot problems" it says the diagnostic policy service isn't running. I have tried manually starting it, but I cannot seem to get it to start. Oddly enough as long as I boot into Ubuntu I have no trouble whatsoever connecting to the internet. (This repair is non-essential since the only reason I want it is because I play certain games that have not yet been ported to Wine so I need internet on my windows partition to play them)

2) ESSENTIAL - I just moved into a new place, and there is no way for me to get wired internet. Luckily they have wireless. So I went out and bought a wireless N adapter and installed it. It worked fine at my house where I tested it, but now in this apartment I am having issues. Basically I can get a bit of internet after 0.5-1.5 hours of messing around with the tp-link software and the router (which I bought, and is also tp-link). However when I do get internet it always follows this pattern: 11Mbps (as stated by speedtest.net) for about 5-10 minutes, then 0.6 Mbps (again as stated by speedtest.net) for about 10-15 minutes, then nothing. As I am taking an online course during the summer it is obviously unacceptable to have this kind of internet connection. Last time I got my little half-hour of spotty internet by unplugging all the plugs from my adapter and plugging them all back in, but I know there has to be a better way, especially since my laptop has absolutely no trouble with the internet at all. Any suggestions?

Dear All,

We are trying to install and configure RTSP on one of my servers.

This is what we have tried :

First, we installed FFMPEG and Mplayer and tried executing RTSP URL with Mplayer but since no service was running on port 554, the connection was refused. ( This was done after reading some valuable information we received from DC ) Then we installed Wowza with a trial license and configured port 554 in the VHost.xml file. On starting Wowza Media server, both the ports 1935 and 554 are responding, however, RTSP URL still isn't working.

root@cms [~]# lsof -i:1935
COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE/OFF NODE NAME
java 911 root 54u IPv4 127776519 0t0 TCP *:macromedia-fcs (LISTEN)

root@cms [~]# lsof -i:554
COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE/OFF NODE NAME
java 911 root 58u IPv4 127776524 0t0 TCP *:rtsp (LISTEN)

After installing we checked one of our URL on VLC :

And VLC returned the following :

====
Your input can't be opened:

VLC is unable to open the MRL 'rtsp://abcdefg.XXXYYY.com:554/popup/video/test.mp4'. Check the log for details.

Looks like its a permission issue but dont know where to check? Looks like we are stuck somewhere.

Are we doing this right? Can anyone shed some light on this please?

Hello Daniweb,

Well... my PDU exploded the other day with a bang and a white flash, took out my entire rack and tripped the main breakers, so since I need to replace this anyway I was thinking of re-designing my home network.

At the moment I have two physical servers running (or at least they where running...), one server is for testing and so it shall have the OS re-installed on it every so often (not going to go down the VM route) and the other is used as a file server, and print server for backup and media streaming.

Now, I'm wanting to connect to these servers from the internet so that I can fetch and upload files as and when they are needed, and so I can remotely test things but I'm not sure how to connect to them. I can happily connect to one of them, by port forwarding on my router to the server but how would I connect to the second one? Is it possible to start an SSH session within an SSH session (My computer on the internet > SSH into Server 1 > SSH into Server 2 on the LAN)?

If I went down the VPN route, would I be able to do the same? Could anyone suggest how I should do this?

Thank you

Hi friends,
Generally, i access my internet without using any proxy servers ie my Chrome/firefox/IE always has this option unchecked. Then i ran SecurityKiss Tunnel this one time (on WIN XP2) and it worked fine but then once i closed Security Kiss Tunnel i couldn't connect in either browser, inspite of having my original browser settings, wherein no proxy server option was selected. I reinstalled my Operating system but problem is still esixting.
So currently, i can connect only by using Security Kiss or through any other proxy and not without it, which's consequently affecting my speed esp for torrents.Without Security Kiss or any proxy software my torrents are working perfectly but brower do not work, even not display a single page.
Also, can't be a router issue as it works fine on my other OS.
I generally dont have good luck with forums but hoping u guys can help me out, till then ultrasurf it is.

I consider myself a mid to advanced PC user, I 'am thinking of joining the "work at home" community, I want to set up a home office environnment in my redesigned garage, I have 2 desk tops, monitors etc. now here's the question. Should I ,do I, need to employ an additional wireless router?(I'm currently using a high speed carrier with capabilities of multiple users and devices,ie; TV boxset top/dvr,lap top,tablets) I have the exact same brand, unused additional router for my use. now if I connect this additional router to the office PC would I be able to networkmy home PC? I know that the SSID,KEY/Security# would be different, but would I be able to end work and walk away from the office PC and resume on the home computer? or am I simply over thinking this?
any suggestions, advise, so on would be be greatly appreciated.

Hello everybody,

I have decided to start working on an application for my customers which will allow me to maintain their computers remotely using VNC. I currently have a very basic VNC system which I plan to customize for my own use (All in C#).

The problem I now face is that for my customer, having to set up port forwarding on their router is not desirable and in most cases very impractical as the very nature of my customer base is to not have a very good working knowledge of anything computer related beyond basic usage.

UPnP is not a viable option as my customers all likely have UPnP off by default and going around to each customer before allowing remote access is not an option (very costly!).

My main thought is having outbound only connections server-side and using my client-side as a listener, therefore bypassing any need for port forwarding and should give my customers a "zero config" style service.

Just looking for thoughts or ideas on how to impliment this best and any design ideas that may be of interest. Anybody worked on this type of thing before?

Thanks.

I work at a small non-profit organization, with around 10 employees. We are an education non-profit and have around 100 students in our building every day. We are using the computers for multiple things, such as Google Earth/Mars, CAD software (Pro Engineer), accessing internet sites (NASA), etc., so we use our computers a lot. Lately, as we have added more activities that require the computer, our internet connection has been terrible as far as speed. We also use the internet for registration purposes with volunteers, and we've seen a big slow down there as well. I ran a test at www.speedtest.net and found that our average download speed is about 5.59 Mb/s (global average is 13.09 Mb/s) and our upload speed is 0.73 Mb/s (global average is 5.33 Mb/s). Are our speeds extremely slow? What would people recommend our internet speeds to be at with having 100 students using the computers each day and using programs that take up bandwidth?

Hello,

I have setup a simple IIS web server to host my files so I can get them at college. The server is up and I set it to accept any ip "all unasigned" on port 55566. my problem is this: I can get to the web server fine on my lan and if I type in my Bell turbo hub's ip followed by the port but no one else can... The port is forwarded but useing a port testing website tells me that the port is "filtered". all security setting are off in the router and my computer was DMZ but still, no luck.

I'm using a Netgear MBR1210 router and i get the internet via the Bell cell phone network.

What's up?

ps: if I go to google and type in what is my ip, i get my ip but it is different that the turbo hub's ip.
