I love dani web its great, however anyone can vote comments/articles down right? I have noticed down votes bieng given for perfectly helpful comments. I recieved one recently when i was legitimetly trying to help. I think some sort of privilege should be needed to down vote comments/articles. Would be nice to see something like this on dani web. What do you guys think? Would it be possible to incorporate into dani web?

An application, when registered to DaniWeb, requires a URL to be provided. A desktop application obviously doesn't have one of these.

When sending OAuth requests we have to provide a redirect URL on the domain we registered the application too, therefore if we dont have the domain as its a desktop application, we cant OAuth, correct?

Only way round figured on the IRC was to own web space to allow a page on a webserver as intermediairy for the redirect to go to.

However, would it be possible to provide an option in individual user's controls to disable such functionality? I have found two downsides to it on my current work machine which partially impact the sites useability.

Once again my IE8 install (Can't be changed as machine is set to a specific dev config) is letting me down on page rendering once the menu is floating resulting in the following:

Edit: The menu works fine as long as the page is scrolled to the top, but as soon as it becomes a floating menu the render breaks.

And secondly the same laptop also happens to run a lower resolution screen (1366x768), which is painful as it is, which therefore seems to make my favourite loitering page, live activity feed, seem quite cramped and takes a precision scroll to fit the whole feed on the page :)

I know minor issues and the fact im forced to use an old browser doesn't help but wondered if it would be possible to restrict the floating menu :)

On any of my other machines where I have normal browsers and 1920x1080 its a lovely update!

I know that a good application or website performs its job exceptionally well and the look and feel of the application doesn't affect, or shouldn't affect it's performance. But come on! It does.

UX/UI design is more than just the color to use for a background and putting pretty pictures on the splash screen, it's also setting tab order, laying out controls in an easy to read and scannable fashion. It also encompasses when to use a new form compared to changing panel contents or when to open a new browser window or instead refresh an iframe. UX/UI design is a science...no really it is! Companies spend boatloads of cash on studies following eye movement of computer users, surveys, and publishing internal and public guidelines.

Having a high performance application with awesome speed and no bugs (I'm talking in a perfect world here) but having a poorly designed UI is like putting the body of a Cessna 175 on a MD F-15 Eagle Fighter Jet Engine. It doesn't work.

I would suggest that the design forums be separated by Desktop Applications and Web Applications because mashing them together into one forum is just going to cause confusion and they really are two different beasts.

DaniWeb is a great community, and is a place I love going to chat, get ideas and share ideas. But some of us, me included, are pretty good with the development part of applications. Writing code is easy for me, and fun, but when it comes to the design surface, and creating the UX/UI...I fail. My brain doesn't work that way, and having a place to bounce ideas off of others who are good at UX/UI design would be awesome!

Well it's simple. Since I've been hacked by someone with way more sophositication than this board provides. The potential exists for someone to log onto my old account, and please don't tell me about passwords, since it would seem that the hack occurs down the line, so anything I enter is likely to be captured. Run on sentence I know, but "someone" could access my accoun and post anything illegal and leave me with a world of problems.

Perhaps things have changed, but I do not see the option anywhere to close the account. Plus another horrible security practice is that most sites don't even delete the account. They just de-activate it, meaning anyone with the proper info can reactivate it without your knowledge and do the aforementioned.

Liste, there are few of us under such conditions. But the very dark side of hacking exists, and it would be nice if the obvious security holes could be plugged by people who should know better.

You can keep my info, just don't allow anyone, including me, access to it ever again. Security problem solved unless someone hack's your servers, and now that's not likely is it???

I attached a zip file. I can see it when I "Edit Article", but it's not showing for download. Perhaps because it's a zip, or a code snippet?

When I go to login to Daniweb, it won't allow me, telling me I have an error with my login detains. So I go through the password reset via email, and I get logged in. I change my password and then I log out.

I go to the login screen and use the updated password, it wont let me, telling me I have an error.

I've tried this over and again, its not a one off thing.

I can login using facebook, but thats not fixing the problem.

Can anyone help?

The two API write operations (voting on posts and watching/unwatching articles) used to always respond with a JSON object in the format success: true or success: false

Now, they return the following:

• If successful, a JSON object with information about the action that was performed
• If unsuccessful and JSON was requested, an HTTP 400 error
• If unsuccessful and JSONP was requested, a JSON object with a bad request error message

At what point will the ticker show an update? Is it a live process, once the payment has been validated, or is it a batch process?

I attached an image of a sticky. Is it possible to add a color to it so it will stand out. Since you implement a sponsor thread to have a color. It is possible to make a color for the sticky? So it can look nice.

I have another suggestion to make regarding the same, and this suggestion is regarding this same system; however, it is not a change that I would like to propose here, but a bug I've spotted. Consider the example given in the former para. Now, on the profile, n(posts voted down) is one, but when I, for example, click on the "View posts voted down" button, the post is not displayed because its net rating is zero. Please resolve this - I believe the modification I have proposed in para one would be a good solution, because storing the details of upvoted and downvoted posts for each member separately would take up too much space.

There's always been this queston on my mind: Why doesn't the website auto add the threads you reply to as watched articles? Is this functionality meant for any other purpose? In my opinion, the reply action in a thread should work like facebook (i know... i know...): replying automatically subscribes you to the thread, until the user selects the "unsubscribe" ("stop watching this article", "remove me from the subsribe list", etc.) option.

What is the Pro or Con of it?

I have registered to this site an year ago but I was not visiting it for a long time.. But Now I visited this site after a very long time.. I started providing answer @ ASP.NET sections.. But to my surprise I found that someone is down-voting my responses apparently without any reasons..

I have few Questions in my mind:

1> How can I know who is down-voting my posts? Is this possible or not?

2> How can I alert or contact Moderators @ daniweb?

3> Is this forum not getting moderated? It is because see anyone could downvote one's thread without any reason.. It should get moderated as far as quality of the forum is considered.. For Example Suppose if a person is giving correct replies but his posts are getting downvoted.. Then this will definitely affect the quality of this forums adversely..

4> As far as I am considered I received a total of 9 Down-votes in 12 hours.. So It is out of my mind by now..

If you didn't get that, follow these steps to replicate:

1) Edit a post
2) Save that post
3) Edit it again without reloading the page
4) You will notice it had the original post content from the post creation.

To me it seems that you are not loading the post content from the server each time after the initial load of the post for the edit box.

I know it's only a small bug, but now I know, it's kinda annoying, and would probably take two minutes to fix.

Just add in somewhere along the

a:

to prevent that from occuring.

Because I have this question for many months I am not sure that I haven’t posted a question already in Hardware and Software > Linux and Unix section. I am not sure what way is there in Daniweb to find out that, so maybe there is and sorry for mentioning it , but if is , is not an obvious one.

There could be an advanced searching option that you could search for some keywords in topics ( or thread ) and a certain poster username ( or not ) and many-many more. This is just a suggestion.

The reason was clearly stated in my comment and in this post.
Also note that the voting system as it currently stands allows anonymous votes.
If you disagree about this then I do suggest you to join this discussion by writing something that is constructive rather than by whining about the couple of downvotes you got.

As for this is concerned,if you are java professional you might know that there are only 1 oracle site for java docs.
As you may know a website can consist out of many webpages, as is the case with many websites, and certainly with Oracle's. Therefore simply stating "oracle site" is vague and not helpful if you intend to prove something.
What is helpful is providing a reference if you quote things because some people might be interested to take a look at the source you use to underpin the statements you make in your post.

This may be irrelevant but i also noticed that i recieved reps from a user who had 7 rep points and my rep points didn't go up even thought i was told it would go up If the user didn't have 0 rep points and didn't give you reps in the community center... just asking about it.

It seems that currently, anyone can endorse anyone and there is no restriction.

I can provide an example of what appears to be abuse of the system, however, I am against naming in public so please PM me (Dani/Deceptikon you're the only guys I know reputibly)

I would like to propose that only active contributors can endorse and that this should have a minimum threshold. You should also only be able to endorse if you have a minimum amount of reputation. This should stop at least difficult enough to abuse that it isn't worthwhile.

Unfortunately, as it stands, the endorsement system doesn't appear to be trustworthy.

I would happily sit on the chat most days at work however it's normally blocked by our internal proxies and thus it would be nice to have a direct way to actually access the IRC. We might even see the activity on it pick up as a result :)

If I hover over an avatar (in this case mine) a tooltip is shown that tells "30 C++ Endorsements".

That doesn't seem to conform to the information I find on my profile page:

All my received endorsements are in Software Development forums, so adding them all up 15+8+8 = 31 (should equal the 30 shown in the previous screenshot [1])

Sure I understand that the endorsement counts are summed up for parent forums, however, why not say "30 Software Development Endorsements" instead?

Wouldn't that be more representative, more clear, and less misleading?

To me it just doesn't make any sense to say that a person got N XYZ Endorsements for a certain parent forum, N being the sum of endorsements earned in the child forums, XYZ being one specific child forum.

[1] I believe it was by design that the endorsement strips above the page footers of forums are only updated at certain time intervals, so I ignored that for the point I'm trying to make in this post.

I am trying to reset my password with my non-facebook account (ie Stuugie) but the link from my email takes me to a page that states "there was an error" and "nothing to see here". I cannot remember my original password and I've cleared all my browser info.

The remove option was available only in edit mode, after I posted.

If I scroll down the page, or scroll up the page they move around, sometimes moving to the left and blocking the question, sometimes moving over the navigation bar etc. I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 with Firefox 19.0

When the article first loads it shall be in the correct place but then when I move they move out of line.

I don't know if it is that important, but i thought it maybe a helpful feature.

When replying to a post I press the button to confirm, the button disappears, replaced by the "Watch This Thread" button, however, the post is not submitted. The text box does not disappear, I can happily copy and paste my post into a new reply box.

The twice it has happened today, I have noticed that someone else has posted whilst I wrote my reply. Not sure if this is connected or not.

PS. Just a little bug-bear of mine and not really a complaint, but when you press home on a wrapped line it goes to the beginning of the text not the beginning of the line.

Eg. Let's say this sentence is a long sentence and is wrapping on THIS word meaning everything beyond it is on another line and I want to go and change the word "word". If I hit the HOME key, it will go all the way back to "Let's" instead of "word".

For example the member query example using Dani does not show the fact the user could return a linkedin field in the social media section. It would make some mappings etc for API use alot easier knowing 100% what we could receive from an API response.

I tend to convert everything returned in JSON to an XmlDocument before manipulating it (Simply because I don't actually know how else to handle it within C#) However if I run any queries that return more than one result within the JSON, for example members/{:ID}/endorsements the XmlDocument parse fails as there are multiple root level elements read from the parser.

This to do with the structure that is returned from DaniWeb or the actual parser failing? I'm using the Newtonsoft.Json DLL (Aka JSON.Net) to parse to Xml. (Would expect its functionality to be well tested?)

Update: I see now that Firefox doesn't even show the "Edit Post" link, which is probably what Chrome should have done. (Because it's been a while since I posted it?)
