Hi All,

I know this may be silly but meh! We're all getting older here, even you young ones! In saying that, I've never had the notion that I am old. After all, I play video games among other things and (you could ask my wife) I'm probably still considered immature (I'm going to keep it that way too).

However, in the last 6 months my eyesight has been on the decline. A couple days ago I got some reading glasses so that I can see words close to my face. Over the last 6 months I've been noticing (but yet still in denial) that I've been straining to read words close up. It was to the point that I started carrying around a small magnifying glass in my front pant pocket. My wife, who is oozing common sense, went and got me 2 pairs of reading glasses that I now wear (and sometimes both at once). I'm glad I got the glasses but it has made me reflect on the fact that I am now officially getting old. An economist that I work for told me 3 years ago that the eyes will go first and that he used to be 20/20 but now he needs prescribed glasses (he's 65).

Anyhow, I'm just some middle-aged guy that's starting to notice the affects of aging. I guess my question is, what happened to you that made you realize you are not a youngbuck no more? As stated, my eyes have been that turning point for me, how about you?

Someone just notified me that a new free online space provider has launched, called Copy. If you know Dropbox: it's pretty much similar to that for as far as I can see now, only here you get a starting 15GB for free (instead of 2? at Dropbox). They now have a temporary? launch action: for each person you redirect to Copy that then registers himself, both you and the one registering get 5GB of extra space.

So therefore my idea: if anyone is interested in registering, register, then copy your share-link to this thread, and the next person who is interested uses that link to register and then posts his own share link here. That way everyone will get +10GB extra: one for joining, and one for the referral of the next person.

I'll start. If you're interested, join can join using my referral link.

Have fun! :)

Got into office at 6.30am yesterday (hour later than usual) and was going back home by 8am. Ended up back in bed at 10am, woke again at 4pm. Back in bed at 8pm, slept through until 6am this morning. Wow! Really strange bug, high temperature and very weak (had to crawl up the stairs to bed FFS!) plus no appetite (one slice of toast all day) but feel fine today. Susie also had same thing yesterday, with the addition of vomiting throughout - so I think I got off lightly.

I am going to get over it by spending the morning in the office catching up on the work I coudln't do yesterday, then four hours in the chair this afternoon having both sides of my neck, and the bottom of the back of my head, tattooed this afternoon :)

Adolf Hitler was a heavy smoker in his early life — he used to smoke 25 to 40 cigarettes daily — but gave up the habit, concluding that it was a waste of money. In later years, Hitler viewed smoking as "decadent" and "the wrath of the Red Man against the White Man, vengeance for having been given hard liquor", lamenting that "so many excellent men have been lost to tobacco poisoning". He was unhappy because both Eva Braun and Martin Bormann were smokers and was concerned over Hermann Göring's continued smoking in public places. He was angered when a statue portraying a cigar-smoking Göring was commissioned. Hitler is often considered to be the first national leader to advocate nonsmoking, although James VI and I of Great Britain has a better claim to that title by three hundred years.

I'm soon to be a graduate in Computer Science with enough relevant experience to enter a good paying job as soon as I graduate. Having done software development however I'm not sure if it satisfies me on a personal level. The money's good... but the work is very repetitive and never feels like you're doing something that will have an impact in the world or the sciences. It will pay well but due to the hours one has to work in their life (8 hours per day) - I really don't think I can do software development for that long a period and be satisfied with my life when I look back, say when I'm 60 years old +.

What is a rewarding career that one can go on to from a degree like mine. Rewarding for me is something where a lot of people will benefit from something I'm producing OR it will make the world a better place OR it will give travel opportunities OR it will allow me more control over the work I'm doing OR it will provide me with the chance to do research into new interesting topics of study - any of those.

I've spoken to a few colleagues in the same profession and a lot of them seem to have the same view though they're hesitant to have it heard so to keep up an image but I hope some answers can be given that will be good advice to me and those with similar thoughts.

Though it is well established that smoking is more prevalent among schizophrenics than the general population as well as those with other psychiatric diagnoses, there is currently no definitive explanation for this difference.[3] Many social, psychological, and biological explanations have been proposed, but today research focuses on neurobiology.

So,

I've always found this bit difficult, and therefore I was wondering what others do in regards to the topic of Terms and Conditions, Privacy Policies and legal mumbo jumbo.
The cost of hiring a lawyer to write such legal information for websites is often extremely expensive and therefore it isn't normally practical for a small independant developers to justify it, however you still need them to protect you from the potential problems that may result from malpractice from your users, and from any approaching third party.

The internet is becoming a legal minefield, and it getting more and more difficult to remain protected.

Do you guys write them yourself, use one of those free online templates or do you actually pay for a lawyer?

Thanks in advance.

A new poll released today shows a large a gap between parents’ perceptions of their children’s weight and expert definitions.
What do other experts in ageing say?
"When testosterone is lacking, the demand for amino acids to support cell proliferation and muscle-building is decreased, and it's thought that the body then shifts the use of these basic building blocks towards cellular defence and stress resistance," says Holly Brown-Borg, who studies ageing at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. She guesses that the eunuchs were smaller and less muscular, with lower levels of cancer and heart disease.

On May 29, 1913, one hundred years ago, Igor stravinski premiered The Rite of Spring. This was supposed to be the ballet concert of the year and all of the best of Paris society was in attendence; the music was so new and raw that after a couple minutes the audience began make catcalls and whistles but then they rioted. Yes, the audience rioted in the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, smashed up the place, beat each other bloody and actually moved out into the streets - the riots continued for 3 days.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:NikolaiRoerichRite1.jpg

One year later, the production was greated with great acclaim and Stravinski was carried victoriously through the streets of Paris. In 1940, The Rites of Spring was included in Fantasia as part of a children's musical piece.

This is an exageration (the riots were not that bad) but the musical concepts were new and, for the time, very disturbing. But even the Disney version is disturbing and brings to mind the much later animation for Ravel's Bolero - which is what the animator Bruno Bozzetto meant for us to see but is not as apparent until you view The Rite of Spring after seeing Bolero - with the 'monkey-man' appearing. Ravel's Bolero was commissioned to be a part of a ballet called Fandango - the scene was a smokey cantina with the basoon danced by the 'prima balerina' and the other instruments would emerge from fog/smoke for their part and then recede back into the fog/smoke. The premier was greeted with cheering, shouting and the stamping of feet - it was loved immediately. It was reported that a woman was heard to shout "the madman, the madman"; when told of this, Ravel replied "that lady, she understood". He thought Bolero was one of his least important pieces but it is what he is remembered for.

As a side note, one of Ravels drinking buddies was a world class pianist who drafted to fight in WWI and was shot in the arm and taken prisoner by the Russians. His right arm was amputated. This was Paul Wittgenstein (his brother is Ludwig Wittgenstein the philospher). Paul was pretty depressed since he had expected to have a career as a pianist but he did not give up; he begged the big name composers of the day (Richard Strauss, Benjamin Britten, Sergei Prokofiev, Paul Hindemith, and the French composer, Maurice Ravel) to write something that would showcase his talent. Ravel was the only one who responded - he wrote 2 pieces for left handed pianists. They are so taxing that most 2-handed pianist who try it cheat by grabbing onto the right side of the piano to drag themselves from one side of the piano to the other.

but I digress

I hope I did not bore you.

Hi All,

I started this general discussion because I want to know what kind of standards you all work by with regards to documenting your projects.

I've been steadily working on a system at work since last spring that is automating (extracting, transforming, & loading) data flows within my department. It was a brand new system that has taken coworkers from copying and pasting data-sets into Excel, to automatically downloading and storing data-sets in an SQL Server database. However, I am the only one working on this project, with some help from some great guys from a different department (when I need help). Because of being the only person on this big project, I haven't been able to document very much along the way. I've made ERDs, DFDs, a couple Use Cases, as well as a few other documents that showed progression (not Gantt charts). While this has been alright for me and those involved in my department, I've been thinking about what problems may arise when someone other than me (in the future) has to analyze and fix the problems. Because of the lack of documentation, future maintainenance will be a big issue if I'm not the one maintaining this beast.

All that being said, are you thorough with your documentation and do you document every aspect of your projects? Or, do you have a document writer?

I find documenting is a very time-consuming aspect of system development, necessary but time-consuming, especially for a one-man-show.

Thoughts!?

Hey guys, I'm a freshman in College and I've never had a job before. I really want to get a job doing some web development at my campus. The jobs are all entry level and I've beeing developing websites for the past six years so I feel like I should be able to land a job, but I want to make sure my resumé looks good.
http://i.imgur.com/fqZckuB.png

I had an older member of my fraternity help me with the resumé but I feel like there is way to much fluff in there (such as the 125 words per minute :/). Please don't hold back, tell me anything and everything that is wrong about it.

Thanks.

P.S. I apologize if this is not the correct place for this.

___________________________________________________________________________

NOTE
I haven't been in Daniweb for years and there are so many changes that I don't even know how to create a poll (or maybe this feature has been removed).

Reason

A few days ago, I am starting developing a small open-source portable C++ IDE for fun. My aim is not to compete with any other IDE in term of rich-features. Instead, I focus on simple interface, easy to use, and good for educational purpose. One of our main feature is that it is easy to get C++ code running (no need to creating new project, no need to save the file before able to compile and run, just write code and press F5). So, the reason behind this post is to measure my potential audiences which is people who casually use C++ for doing small thing.

Hi,

I have a friend who raised this question and it really got me wondering. I'm not so familiar with laws but basically he's going abroad on a holiday and of course is taking his laptop + ext hard drives with him. The problem (or is it?) is that he's concerned about having .mp3 and .avi files which were torrented and from what I saw the legallity of these files is questionable (as there were a lot of movies and tv series etc.)

He's worried about being searched and with the tightened airport security these days fears what would happen if his items were to be searched and hardware storage devices pryed into. What exactly is the ruling on these matters I.E in that condition if he was found with this material what would the Airport security/whoever is in authority do about it?

I am creating a PDF document for my manager that's a combination of PDF files as well as Excel files. The Excel files contain data sets and all I do for them is a simple Save As which is no problem. However, one of the files, after the save, converts its data set into 3 PDF pages where as another file, with a different but similar in size data set is converted to one PDF page. Does anyone here know how I can make the 3 page data set into 1 in the PDF?

Might be wise to start taking all your pictures off the internet. Anything without metadata (or has had it stripped by Fa...an unscrupulous company) is fair game.

Note that this also extends to sound/music, designs(graphical, mechanical, system) and even software.

I've just been playing this morning with some css3 stuff, and realised (I know I'm behind the times on this) what total Cr*p a certain well distributed browser is! Not only do we have to add lines and lines of code to our css because the thing has it's own rules, and even then they don't work!
A simple sample:-

index.html

<html>
<head>
<title>title</title>
      <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="css/reset.css" />
      <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="css/style.css" />

</head>

<body>
<div class='header'>
</div>

<div class='wrapper'>
<div class='banjo'>
</div>
</div>

</body>
</html>

and style.css

body{
     background:#EDEFEF
}

.header{
     background:#D5DEDF;
     border:1px solid #485253;
     height:125px;
     margin:10px auto;
     position:relative;
     width:85%
}

.wrapper{
     -moz-box-shadow:5px 8px 8px 9px #4D4D4D;
     -webkit-box-shadow:5px 8px 8px 9px #4D4D4D;
     background:#ffffff;
     border:1px solid #7E8A8D;
     box-shadow:5px 8px 8px 9px #4D4D4D;
     height:70%;
     margin:10px auto;
     position:relative;
     width:85%
}

.foot{
     font:9px comic sans ms;
     margin:0px auto;
     text-align:center;
     width:85%
}

.banjo{
     -moz-box-shadow:2px 4px 5px 5px #4D4D4D;
     -moz-transform:rotate(-9deg);
     -webkit-box-shadow:2px 4px 5px 5px #4D4D4D;
     -webkit-transform:rotate(-9deg);
     background:#ffffff;
     box-shadow:2px 4px 5px 5px #4D4D4D;
     height:300px;
     margin:15px auto auto 15px;
     position:relative;
     transform:rotate(-9deg);
     width:300px
}

Works great on Firefox, Opera and my fave Chrome, on IE.... not a chance!
Even the simple margin rule won't render, and the box I've placed (
<div class='banjo'>
) doesn't even show up on IE.
If I ever get round to actually publishing anything out there, I think a splash screen "View on anything except IE" will be in order!

Well...... thats my rant of the month over...........

For me in one year I went from not being able to adjust a color of the link to making pretty dynamic websites that would look pretty cool/nice. I make mistakes here and there and ask questions here and there but hey, I have improved a lot thanks to the assistance of the daniwebbers themselves. (i improved a whole lot when you think about it). Also, in softwawre developement, i am improving but i am still a noob but i will get better.

So evaluate yourself, how much do you think you have improved? A lot, little, kind of, etc.

Well, my laptop is rather slow... and it's missing the 'Zzzzzzzzzzz' key (woops... stupid thing).

My current computer is a Fujitsu Siemens Lifebook A Series (AH530), it only has 2GB of RAM installed and a 250GB HDD making it unsuitable for anything heavy handed, and it has a dual core 2.13Ghz processor (Intel P6200).

I thought it was about time I upgraded, and I've found what looks to be a good priced laptop on Dabs.com, an Acer V3-571G (Dabs or Acer Official)

It still is a dual core, but has a clock speed of 2.5Ghz (3MB Cache) which is a nice improvement on my current PC, and the 8GB of RAM, 750 GB HDD is certainly going to be an improvement. I can't find too much about graphics, so I don't know what it's running but as I won't be gaming on it (nothing major anyway), it shouldn't be too much of an issue.

I'm planning on Dual Booting Ubuntu, with Ubuntu being the main OS on it, it currently has Windows 8 (not sure how it will work with this UEFI issue etc.)

What does everyone think? A decent laptop for £500, for work, media streaming and internet browsing? Does ayone have any other suggestions for about the £500 price range?

Thanks

iv only begun using VS , but i do like how easily (with a mouse clicks) it makes the connection between the database and the code, i suppose that would be an advantage over java?

I hate names Sergei, Igor, Alexandre and many other
(name Ivan in Russia is very very rare, cause it is associated with "Ivan the fool" - a personage from Russian fairy tales).
I never met name "Vitali" in Russian literature of the 19th century.
After 1917 it got into fashion for several decades, then it faded away.
Now pop names here is: Maxim, Denis, Kristina, Darya, phhhhhhhhh...
Names Nadezhda, Luyobov', Zoya, Maria, Marina (my beloved female name) totally disappeared

What was the most trouble you have gotten into?

For me it was when I "purposely" scared a whole bunch of people about a super hard test and causing them to fail their test. They decided to report me to the teacher and I told him that I didn't do anything against the rules and he said to me (this is word by word), "I know, they are chickens that were going to fail anyways. Since you got a good grade, I will let you off on this one but remember, the next time you scare them make sure you "proof" of how hard it is". He was an awesome math teacher but unfortunately he got layed off a long with my science teacher (accidentally shot her with a water bottle rocket on "accident").

So anyways... if you understood my story, what was the most trouble you have ever gotten in?

For those of you who don't know, one explosion went off at the finish line, and one at the JFK library. Two more packages have been found (although unconfirmed) so it is rather worrying, especially considering the London Marathon is coming up.

2 Killed
20+ Injured

Condolences with the families, and hoping that everyone else makes it through fine.

Does anyone have any more information on what's happened?

Howdy folks,

Apologies for posting this a bit late than usual; normally I post this thread a few days before a new season starts so this technically isn't a preview, but oh well. Anyways, the chart showing the different anime which airs this season can be found at Neregate.

Unfortunately, this season looks a bit meh (but still better when compared to the upcoming Summer, but I digress). I have seen the first episode of pretty much all of them and the ones to look out for specifically IMO are:

Shingeki No Kyojin [good action]

Hentai Ouji To Warawanai Neko [funny]

Dansai Bunri No Crime Edge [unique setting]

Devil Survivor 2 The animation [reminds me of Persona 4]

Toaru Kagaku no Railgun S [2nd season of the famous railgun series]

Hataraku Maou-sama [comedy with a good premise]

Are you specifically looking out of any of these or would you rather wait for the 2nd season of "Katekyo Hitman Reborn" to start airing. ;)

For me, it could be about 5-9 hours (when i am asleep) but when i was on vacation, it was about 2-3 days away. I tend to check the forums during lectures (in class) on my phone or check the site when i am at a game (when i am playing, when i am in the sidelines of course... i am a starter :D).

I wrote this a few years ago as part of a C manual I wrote, but did not finish. I thought it might be interesting to the people on DaniWeb.

Programming Language Generations

Different types of programming languages are often grouped into large categories known as generations. Each generation consists of languages that behave in similar ways. The higher the generation number, the more abstraction is present in the language and the more indirect is the programmer's interaction with the computer. A first-generation language gives almost direct access to the hardware and operations of the computer, while a fourth-generation language isolates the programmer from almost all of the operational details to perform the desired task.

First-Generation Languages

First-generation languages are the first languages created for computers. (No great surprise there!) Each processor (CPU) uses a set of numeric codes to tell it what to do. Different types of processors (e.g. Pentium vs. Power-PC vs. Sparc) use different sets of numbers for their instructions. These sets of numbers are the first-generation languages. These first-generation languages are often called machine language.

Using first-generation languages gives the programmer the greatest degree of control, but this also means that the programmer must manage every aspect of the execution of the program and programs are not portable, that is, they can not be taken from one computer and execute on another, unless the processor and operating system are identical. Also the programmer must remember or look up what each numeric code means and does. A first-generation language instruction might be represented as:

4E 00 2A 31

This is the hexadecimal representation of the numeric instructions for a mythical processor. The 4E could be the instruction, which tells the computer to store the next value (0) into the given address (2A31).

Second-Generation Languages

Second-generation languages are only one step away from machine language. These languages are often called assembly code. Assembly instructions correspond one-to-one with machine language instructions. That is to say, one assembly instruction is compiled to one machine language instruction. Assembly code instructions generally begin with a mnemonic code, followed by numeric arguments, usually in hexadecimal notation. The mnemonics are easier to remember than the numeric codes of first-generation languages, but the programmer still has to manage everything the program will be doing, at the finest level of detail.

These days, each processor developer, such as Intel or Sun, creates an assembly code for each processor it develops. A second-generation language instruction might look like:

STR #00, $2A31

(This instruction translates into the the example in the First-Generation section, and thus does the same thing.)

Third-Generation Languages

Third-generation languages are what most people usually think about when they think of programming languages. These are procedural languages, where the programmer still tells the computer what to do, step-by-step, but each third-generation language instruction often corresponds to more than one first-generation language instruction. Sometimes, one third-generation instruction is translated into hundreds or thousands of first-generation language instructions. Examples of third-generation languages are Ada, BASIC, COBOL, FORTRAN, Pascal and shell scripts. C, and its descendants, including C++, C#, Java and Javascript, are also third-generation languages.

Fourth-Generation Languages

Fourth-generation languages are descriptive languages. The programmer describes the kind of result that is expected, without telling the computer exactly how to do it. It is up to the software to determine how to accomplish the tasks described in the fourth-generation language instructions. Popular fourth-generation languages include SQL (to manipulate relational databases), Postscript (to describe page layout for laser printing) and HTML (to describe how World Wide Web pages look), among others.

Fifth-Generation Language

Fifth-generation languages are constraint-defining languages. Rather than describe the tasks to be done, or the kind of output desired, a programmer uses a fifth-generation language to describe the limits of a problem and then the program determines the solution set based on the given constraints. Prolog is probably the best known fifth-generation language.

Something like a Yahoo answers but with smarter people (no offense) I mean discussing/debating/asking questions that matter, of all types such as what will humans evolve into, is homosexuality hereditary, when will earth become uninhabitable. Some interesting type of stuff answered by an intellectual (at least a bit) community.

I recognize this is a weird request. But anything will be appreciated. I have a lot of time at work when I'm waiting on someone to do something and something that will keep the brain awake and occupied will be great :)

Hello! I'm just curious on everyone's experienice with Windows 8!
I first installed it on an old laptop when the Consumer previews were out, I really didn't like it then for many reasons but my thoughts have changed today. Today I installed the real thing on my main desktop computer and it's really getting to me! I'm loving the speed, the use of flat design, how smooth everything is, and the use of various Segoe UI fonts. I found Metro to be very fun and inviting, but my one complaint as someone with dual monitors was that you can't have metro on one monitor and the desktop on the other (at least I haven't been able to). I'm loving it so far and am going to maybe work with metro and development (DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS). Just interested in any experiences if any.
Thanks.

I was just roaming the internet for some interesting reads and I came across this very interesting paper about how to define a legal framework for the "reasonable expectation of privacy" when it comes to our new cyber-existence. I thought I'd share it with you guys, and see what you think about agencies being able and allowed to collect and analyse huge amounts of data about any individual they like.

The main point of the article is that the conventional wisdom that says that when you roam outside, in public places, you can't expect privacy (i.e., people (incl. authorities) could be watching what you do) doesn't work when it comes to roaming the cyber-world (visiting sites, blogging, chatting, posting on forums / leaving comments / tweeting, etc.) because, in that world, people can collect and analyse all of your actions (past and present) as a whole and this way, they can infer so much about who you are, what you do, who you associate with, what your views are, etc..., that it amounts to things that anyone would consider to be their "private business". And in most countries, private citizens (and by extension, companies) are not allowed to look into other people's "private business" too much (i.e., it's illegal, and usually a felony), and authorities are not allowed to do that either unless they can show "probable cause" and obtain a warrant.

Currently, many agencies and private companies are taking huge liberties in this regard, enjoying the legal void and the lack of any serious policy to guarantee people's right to privacy, to do anything from customer profiling (to drive product suggestions and ads) to full-blown cyber-espionage.

What are your opinions about this?
Do you expect your cyber-activities to be private?
If not, what about the sum of all your cyber-activities and all the information that can be inferred from that?
Can you think of a practical way to guarantee people's right to privacy in this information-rich environment?
If information collection and analysis needs to be controlled, what does that imply for internet freedom and net-neutrality?

Whilst thinking up a new hobby project, I got to thinking back to the family's first computer,
and the games we played on it. Younger members will likely get lost here, but here goes.
Our first was a secondhand Vic20, and this would be about 30 years since, with a cassette tape drive, and connected to the tv, via a modulator, if memory serves.
All of the games were text, and each time you answered aquestion, or made adecision, you had to wait for the tape to re-wind, wind forward, and then load the reply! Oh the fun we had, a game that would take milliseconds now took hours then.
Next on our list came several game 'consols' as I recall, ping pong, tank battle, space invaders and the like.
We managed to upgrade to an atari, and that was exiting, real(??) graphics, i.e bunches of pixels representing
the rough shape of your car, spaceship etc.
We moved up to our first 'real' pc, an Amstrad, round about the early 80's, cost a fortune, and with only dial-up, so did the internet.
Just shows how far we've come in a few years.
Anyone remember all that?

I just found the coolest new BOINC project (BOINC projects are distributed projects that use your spare computer cycles to solve HUGE computational questions from SETI to Malaria to climate research) - it is called Quake-Catcher out of Stanford University. They send you a sensor that you screw to your floor and connect to your computer. The screen-saver is a 10-second delayed view of all the quakes being recorded all over the world - it ab-fab. I live in Seattle which is a subduction zone so they were particularly interested getting a sensor here. I am on the ground floor and leave my computer on 24/7. They have sensors for laptop and desktop; they prefer desktops because of the stability factor.

My current, active projects are World Community, Malariacontrol, and Rpsetta (inactive are UFluids, Lattice, and SpinHenge) on my laptop; on my desktop are climateNet, Einstein, SETI, QuakeCatcher, and a couple others I am too lazy to look up. My group (whick is just me) is Patosi and I am, of course, GrimJack. I know that DaniWeb has its own team.

It's time yet again for a DaniWeb Developer Competition!!

This time the goal is to utilize our new API launched last month.

There's a lot that you can do with our API. Essentially it allows your application (web, desktop, mobile, etc) to tap into DaniWeb's backend. Your own application can use DaniWeb's login mechanism, you can write a native mobile app for DaniWeb, you can create your own completely unique front-end for the site, there really are limitless possibilities.

Unlike previous programming contests on DaniWeb which judged submissions based on style of code, efficiency, etc., this competition will be based on the overall final product.

First Prize: $300 Amazon gift certificate
Second Prize: $125 Amazon gift certificate
Third Prize: $75 Amazon gift certificate

Code submissions should be posted within the code snippet library for their language. Downloadable apps, websites, etc. should be posted within the Show Off Your Projects forum within Business Exchange.

Be sure to tag all submissions with both daniweb-api and daniweb-api-contest-submission

Good luck!!!!! :)

We have a small team of 5 software developers and we are handling products A & B. Last month we were also handed over products C & D from another team which moved to doing something else. Suddenly we have double the work and same number of people. Though we are in the process of hiring it will take some time. Right now we have a huge number of issues and urgent projects and it's getting a bit messy. It seems every week we try a new strategy to tackle the situation but it's not working out. For a week we only worked on issues so that we could get them under a reasonable number but it didn't really work as more kept coming and output was not as great as we thought for various reasons. Now we're 1 week behind on project work and not that much better off on issues.

Was just wondering if anyone here has been through such situations and could share how they tackled it ? I'm not looking for a magic wand but it could be helpful to see if someone tried an interesting approach and it worked.

Just recently, Yahoo! decided to purchase Summly from a teenager for 30 million (USD). Isn't that crazy? Basically, what the teen (and his crew) designed was an app that summarizes news articles from major new companies. Speaking of amazing success, what was the greatest success you have had/felt?
