The problem I am having is with a new rig I was putting together. When I start the computer it keeps on going on and off without even actually starting. The fans startup and shutdown but I can't even get to bios. Its as if the computer gets just enough power to initialize the hardware and then it runs out. At some times it manages to bootup but after a while it freezes and there appears red and green dots/lines all over the screen in varying numbers every time.

Of the new rig the mobo (asrock z77 pro), the cpu (intel i5 2500k) and memory (kingston 2x4gb) are new and the rest come from my old comp.

Now my asumption is that something is overheating but as I have no external way to monitor the comp temps I don't know which one. One possibility I am leaning on is the power supply failure. Unfortunately I have no spare parts which so swap around to test this theory. I need someone with larger experience than my own to either confirm my theories or give me their own. I know it is difficult to judge without seeing the thing in action for ones own eyes but any help is appreciated.

Hi. not sure if anyone can help or not, but I hope so. For the past week ever since I placed a tool for speeding up PC onto home computer and deleted files (I was unaware were for hard drive and start up etc and loads of DLL's I think they are called) by mistake because I didn't realise a program would allow me to do that I've had nothing but nightmare after nightmare. Initially I couldn't open much and although start thing would come up I could do little else. I did get around some thing by clt alt and delete to see running programs and opening them that way. After more nightmares I tried running on different start ups, changing settings etc, safe mode, you name it I tried. After pulling most of my hair out and getting so frustrated I eventually managed to save pretty much everything (I hope ) onto seperate hardrive. Now I am just trying to restore back to original settings as I dont think I can do anything else with it. I have put restore cd into pc tried f8, f2 you name it everything again and the only thing which comes up is safemode in a black screen which I can't anything with and the boot menu which does not seem to let me do anything. The original cd's won't auto run and I can't do anything with it. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can change any of this and just restore or get my pc up and running again. I'm on the laptop and the internet connection is slow to begin with, on here its about 11mbps (paint dries quicker) and I don't seem to have any more options to solve the problem. The only thing which comes up when booted is f12 menu and f2 setup = says f1 to continue or f2 to run setup utility which I can't seem to do anything with either

When I try to load normally and log in I get a box which says windows cannot load locally stored profile directory. This may be caused by insufficient security rights

I hope someone can help as it will be getting thrown out of the window very soon !!!!! lol thanks in advance

Very recently, I let my laptop (HP) battery get too low, and it died on me. Usually, upon plugging in the adaptor, everything starts right back up again. However, this time, the laptop runs, but all I can see is a black screen. I can even hear the little chime when windows starts (vista), but all I can see is black. I don't think it's a backlight issue, as I the black screen still emits a sort of "glow". I know I need a new battery, but as long as it's plugged into the power supply, shouldn't it work fine? I've already tried the electro static discharge several times (unplugging power and batter, then holding power button for 60 seconds) as was suggested by most forums that I read. This didn't work at all. I'm just wondering what it could possibly be, and if there were any easy fixes to this before I took my computer into a professional?

Hello,

I am having this problem lately. When my computer is turned on, it starts normally then sometimes display doesn't show when going to the desktop (switch on, window logo appears, then the display disappears when getting into the "Logging in Window" part). I know that the CPU is running because when I press the CAPS LOCK in the keyboard it turns off and on - the light of the CAPS LOCK indicator and I can properly shut down the computer via ALT+F4 then enter (the CPU really shuts down normally - lights off after a few seconds of doing alt+f4 and enter). And my computer can run normally on safe mode (with normal display).

My Cable is well connected from the CPU to the Monitor. I am using Samsung SyncMaster PX2370.
My CPU has the following specs:
Intel i7 950 3.07Ghz
2GB RAM (the other 2GB RAM was busted so my computer now runs only one 2GB RAM)
Nvidia GTX465
Windows 7 Home 32bit

Hey Guys!

So... I left my PC back home when i went off to college and now that I'm back for summer, it seems that it has missed me because it doesn't work anymore.

First Problem:

When I tried to switch it on, it would start to boot (I'd see the fans try to spring to life) and then it would immediately switch itself off.

What I Tried:

Removed peripherals and reseated all the hardware (RAM sticks, video card, CPU, etc.) -- No luck

Reset BIOS to eliminate overclocks. (removed battery) -- No luck

Took the motherboard, PSU, and video card out, cleaned them thoroughly (with compressed air), connected them outside the case, and applied power. -- This took care of this problem and led to the next.

Second Problem:

PC powers up, fans would get started, all the relevant lights would work but nothing on the screen and no hard drive activity is heard.

What I Tried:

Nothing. I had exhausted my arsenal of things to try in the first problem.

What now?

First i thought maybe I should buy a new video card... Now I'm thinking it's the motherboard because I did have problems with its DIMMs before. You guys have any suggestions?

Thanks,
Khodeir

So i bought a new 22" LCD - LED backlit - monitor for my new buiild, and i'm facing a horrible case of buyer's remorse...

So the problem with this monitor is that:
1) Not much information on it on the web - makes me suspicious
2) Not a very attractive bezel
3) No HDMI (Not a major problem)
4) I don't know if it's the best for it's price
5) NO HOTKEYS ! It's a big issue for me since sometimes i likee the screen bright, and sometimes i don't

I just need someone who knows how monitor's work to confirm that my purchase is good or not. I still have time to go exchange the monitor. My options are:

To keep the LG Monitor

Asus VS228H-P

Anything else up to $150

Also some information regarding the benefits of IPS would be good! Thanks.

Hello,
I would like to create my own slot machine from my PC.

For that I am looking for some slot buttons that can connect to USB, or for some separate keyboard letters to connect through USB ( EG : I would need a hardware with USB plug , that will be just 1 keyboard button and have size of a keyboard button ). If I can buy 1 KEYBOARD BUTTON that connects via USB, I can easily customise it's design.

Does anybody know if that kind of hardware exists ? Or any ideas on how to solve this ?

So far I only found some slot machine buttons for IGT machines : http://na.suzohapp.com/pushbuttons/igtreplacement.htm , but these work only on IGT machines , and I was planing to one of these with 1 keyboard button.

Thank you for your time

I have had this problem and tried to reformat the card in every way possible. Nothing works. you cannot delete anything off the stick because once your stick is corrupted everything on your card cannot be changed thru your any other device. Whatever you try to do it will say "failed" delete failed, format failed, save failed.

I tried helping a few people with this problem and went thru all the steps and more. If anyone has anything more creative. Please help me.

Does anybody experience problems with this motherboard:
ASUS p8h67-m pro
1xHDD 320G
1xHDD 1000G

Both are connected to the SATA6G ports and the disks supports 6G/sec speed. I install win7 on it. The problem is the next:
No matter what I do the MS win7 always recognise the 1000G HDD as disk0 and 320G as disk1. I need to have a separate HDD for windows7 and for data.
The reason for two disks is that the actual system is a Digital Video Recording server which does a lot of disk operations on the HDD wich contains video-data. Because of this several hard-disks already failed and we always need to replace the system disk.

Unfortunately I cannot force windows to use the 320G HDD as disk0. The result of this is that win7 puts the boot partition (system reserved 100M partition) on the 1000G HDD. This causes a problem when the 1000G HDD is replaced the OS cannot boot up.

Additionaly, the HDDs are randomly not recognised by themotherboard.
1. No cable problems are present (data and power)
2. The BIOS is updated to the latest.
3. The HDDs are connected correctly to the 6G/s SATA ports
4. The HDDs are OK. (I made an extended SMART self test with no errors)

The HW vendor told me that they do not know about any bug for this motherboard.
Did anybody encountered any similar issue with this hardware or with win7 installation (i mean the boot partition)

Have a nice day to all of you :)

Before 2 days i reutrned home from work and i found the blue cable with the pins in the floor.. My house maid might did that. Anyways i connected it and the 2 pins too but i get no video input message everytime. Windows seems to work fine becasue i hear the beep noise when i switch on my computer and when i press shift 5 times i get the normal sound. I also connected the monitor to a laptop still no video. I got a new cable still no video. I opened up the pc tower and cleaned all the dust, the fan seems to work normally. Can anyone help me solve this problem please ?

Thanks in advance!

Well, I've had my Gateway laptop for a while now, and I've never had any serious problems with it.
Today, out of nowhere, the cord just stopped working in the middle of charging the laptop. I felt it, and sure enough, it was very hot. It's been very hot like that a few times, so I thought, 'Oh, no problem;it just needs to cool down.'
About an hour later, the cord was perfectly cool and back to normal. My brother tried plugging the laptop in because it was nearly dead, and told me that the cord wasn't working. I made sure it was plugged into the port and outlet correctly, and even changed outlets a few times to see if that was the problem.
It wasn't.
So now my question is: is the cord broken, or does it still need a rest? It was working perfectly just four hours ago, so...
Thanks.

Kinda desperate right now. I've searched a dozen forums and whatever solutions I find there have not worked for me.

Right now I'm getting 100% cpu usage and is kinda making my computer drag, and in some cases shut down.
At first I started noticing this problem when playing Left 4 Dead. All of a sudden my computer would drop to near unplayable frame rates. Then it happened while playing skyrim. I would tab out, look at task manager and see that the system process was using up most of my cpu.
Odd thing is is that in skyrim, after I lost frame rates sometimes I could quickload a game, and I'd be right back at normal cpu usage and frame rates. Strange. Now, mostly, the frames always drop again minutes later, and I'm back at 100 percent cpu drag.

System specs: Windows xp sp3
AMD Athlon 7750 Dual-Core Processor 2.70GHz 2.75GB Ram
4GB Ram, but only use 3gb due to xp 32-bit
Nvidia Geforce Gtx 260
mobo - nvidia nforce730a
cooler master 500w psu

Here's what I've found about this problem:
-It persisted after a fresh install (reformatting and deleting partitions as well) with a long format
-It mostly happens while playing games, sometimes a quick save and quick load would temporarily refresh frame rates. Sometimes this doesnt help and the cpu spikes continue out of game, most of the time persisting for hours. I've seen it spike up out of game as well, but not as much.
-Using Process Explorer I've seen that in the System Process, a process called Interrupts - Hardware Interrupts and DCPs seems to be the thing that's using up all my cpu power whenever this happens.
-Cleaned my heatsink and cpu fan, also applied a fresh dab of thermal paste; and the problem still persists.
-Did a virus scan in updated norton, and various spyware progs. No viruses were found; cleaned up spyware but the problem persisted. Scanned with malware bytes, found 1 item but my computer kept shutting down before finishing... was kind of spooky and unsettling (Running it again as I type after fresh OS install... The program just shut down and now it won't restart. Hopefully thats just a bug in the program. trying a scan with MSE)
-Full scan with MSE, drive is clean
-Ran CCleaner. Cleaned up registry and drives. Problem still persists.
My IDE drives are not in PIO mode. Heard a lot about that.
-Flashed bios. No change.
-Updated graphics card drivers to older and newer versions, as well as motherboard drivers, no change.
-Installed Processor drivers and Dual core optimizer
-Unplugged excess hardware and drives
-Ran checkdsk incase of bad sectors
-Uninstalled/Reinstalled Duplicate Primary and Secondary IDE Channels

I'm totally stumped. If anyone has solved this problem it would be a relief to hear. Thanks.

I have a Hp Laserjet 3030 all-in-one and it just started printing almost solid grey over the whole page. I tried changing resolutions and other settings, ran the printer's own cleaning cycle a couple times, nothing changed. Even on draft mode it still covers the page. It's not perfectly solid, more like horizontal banding but it covers about 85% of the page or more in grey.

Since the HP 12a drums have no functions for physical cleaning, I replaced the drum entirely, put in a brand new HP 12a. Made a test print, and it has the SAME problem but now WORSE than before! The coverage is thicker and the toner darker across the page with more visible banding.

Here is a scan of the page that printed after replacing the drum:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2018803/laserjet.jpg

Is there a transfer wire or cleaning shield or something on the inside that needs cleaning? Not sure where to start.

Thanks for any tips!

Hi

Although my PC detects my disc drives and can play from them when I try to write to the RW drive I get a message "No disc detected". I am using Roxio Creator LE Dell Edition.

I have cleaned the laser carefully using methylated spirits and a surgically clean cotton bud.

The Dell drive is the oringinal circa 2006. I might just as well have binned the crive and bought a new one rather than bother to clean it. But is something that I could do to check the drive before scapping it?

For unknows reasons, other than the fact that I'm trying to intall Windows 8 beta on a separate partion (and the fact that, well, I AM dealing with Windows <sigh>. I kept ending up with a dead 8GB thumb drive that was dead because Windows, in its infinite wisdom caused the file system to not exist, i.e. become RAW. After LOTS of searching, I finally found a proceedure (which seems about as obscure as you can get) for using the command line to make even a screwed up thumb drive such as mine bootable. In particular, this method will convert the thing from RAW to NTFS if nothing else. So should you need it, check this out.

Hi there, I was wondering if you can give me an advice at all. I need to get a HDMI cable to connect my laptop to my LED tv, mainly to watch movies. Now, I don't know much about hdmi cables so I wonder if there is anything you can suggest to help me decide which cable is the best for my situation.
My tv is already connected to my router with a normal ethernet cable.
The HDMI cables seem to range from £8.00 to £80.00 and from what I understand the most expensive are HDMI/ethernet which I probably don't need. So, any suggestion at all?
thanks

My laptop has been on it's last stretch for the last half a year or so and I've come to the conclusion that it will cost me more to fix than it will to replace. I've been sitting on actually building a new rig for a while now, as you can see from my post here: http://www.daniweb.com/hardware-and-software/pc-hardware/motherboards-cpus-and-ram/threads/389125/choosing-a-cpu Having said that, I am now ready financially to move into a desktop. I've been looking at some different builds and the AMD Phenom II X6 1090T. Seriously considering dropping some money on this baby.

I am debating between a Phenom and going for an i7, but I'm not particularly a fan of Intel processors any more and so I've scratched those off the table. My PIII did the job at the time, but my dv6000 gave me both a love and a hate for AMD (and I look at this processor in terms of overclocking - the possibilities are endless.) I really don't see any point in jumping for the AMD FX-8150, either. I've read reviews, and it's got a love-hate going for it. Will the X6 1090T still be something that can tackle today's software - or should I look at some other processors? I'm pretty flexible in what I buy and in terms of price for the most part; I want an investment that is not necessarily the latest release but will still be able to handle future gaming and software. Because of that, I'm looking seriously at the following:

Other suggestions for CPUs?

Hey all !
I have a Dell Inspiron, mini 10 laptop with Windows XP, and a Gig of RAM, updated to SP3.
One day I went to updrade the RAM in the laptop from 1GB, to 2GB. Should be simple.....NOT !
Ya have to take the motherboard out to do this. GRRRR ! I took out the m-board, put in a 2GB stick and put it all back together. When I started up the laptop, eveything worked great except the touchpad and the keyboard. No response at all from them.Took it back apart to make sure I put it together right, and I had. Put it back together again and got the same results. I decided that maybe the RAM was bad so I got another 2GB stick, took the laptop apart and put in a different stick. I ended up with the same results. Touchpad and keyboard.....dead. I thought I'd put the original 1GB stick back in and see if that was it. NOPE ! Same result. Is there a magic switch somewhere that I don't know about ? Is there a secret combination of buttons to push that turn the touchpad and keyboard off ? I read on a thread that someone suggested to push the FN and F7 or F9 buttons. That did nothing either.
They are hooked up right. Ya can not get them mixed up. Anyone run into this before ?

Greetings,

My friends noutebook Emachines e528 felt down from a table and now he has the following issue:

Check cable connection!
PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel PXE ROM
Operating System not found

I tried to take out the computer battery for some time, it didn't resolve the issue. Another advice was to change boot priority in BIOS, this notebook BIOS has the following boot priority:

IDE HDD

CD/DVD

PCI LAN

USB HDD

USB CDROM

USB FDD

USB KEY

I wanted to move CD/DVD to the first boot priority and bios says I have to use F5 and F6 to do so, however when I press these keys nothing happens I can't move the device boot priority with BIOS reccomended F5 and F6 keys.

Any help be much appreciated.

Basically for a while, my video cable has had a DVI adapator to connect my screen to my nvidia graphics card in my computer tower. I was on the train 2 days ago, and my suitcase flew off the luggage rack and the front of the tower cracked. Obviously when I got up to where I was staying I plugged in the screen, and the tower and the screen isn't recieving a signal anymore. I opened up the comp, checked everything even took out the graphics card and checked it, nothing is loose/broken. The cable was acting up before I left, I have sent off for a new adapter AND cable, I am just wondering could it be something else? Like something damaged at the front of the tower? Thanks!

I have a Belkin F1DZ104T Omniview SE Plus Series – 4 Port kvm switch and it is attached to 3 windows xp professional pcs and 1 port is used to test a Linux platform appliance. The central keyboard and mouse are both ps2-based. Power comes from both the kvm switch's ac transformer and each of the motherboards from the attached pcs.

From time to time, the keyboard hangs such that it is non-responsive on all 4 ports. The attached mouse continues to work without issue. The only other significant thing to note is that when the keyboard hangs, the lights on it, are either all on or all off.

The only apparent way to clear up the keyboard is to shutdown the boxes on all of the ports, power off the kvm switch and then power on everything again.

I have no idea as yet, whether this is a power or signal glitch and I'm not sure how to triage the problem further.

thanks in advance.

Hi,

I changed my video card day before yesterday from ATI 4650 to 6670, and then I had problems while switching on my computer for a few times, then it got sorted.

Today, windows informs me that my computer is running slow, so it wanted to switch of aero interface. I clicked no. Then when I restarted my pc, the screen got stuck on "starting windows" so I reset it. Then I got the error "0xc00000e9", So I used windows 7 dvd and it repaired itself. But still the computer speed was very slow. Then again the computer got stuck at "5a" in the bios screen. Also sometimes I got a screen saying Intel Boot Agent
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable.

So I checked in the internet and found out that it had something to do with hard disk.

So I disconnected the hard disk and ran Ubuntu Live CD, for about 30 mins and the computer worked fine. I was able to browse internet.

Now I've reconnected the HDD and am able to use windows 7. Speed has come back to normal.

So I want to know if the problem is due to the HDD and should I get it replaced?

HDD is Seagate Barracude 7200 500 GB
Mother board is DP55WB
4 GB ram
Windows 7
Asus ATI 6670 1GB DDR5

Thanks in advance

Hey fellow members!

I have a question on which I want opinions instead of having a technical information overload for dummies.

I recently bought new components to build a brand new computer under a certain budget. I wasn't planning on getting a great video card for it but eventually settled for a pretty good ASUS Radeon HD6850 for 140$ in Canadian money. Not long after, I found out I could get a Sapphire Radeon HD6870 for 20 extra bucks which in my opinion is not too too bad of a deal. It's not too late to go make the exchange so my question is:

In your honest opinion, is the performance difference worth 15% extra in price?

I will likely keep the ASUS but I just wanted to see what people thought about it. I bought 4 Sapphire cards before and had issues with only one but on the other hand, I've never owned an ASUS. I just have a feeling it would not disappoint.

Blast away with all you got: graphs, pie charts, comparison charts, specs... but just plain old text will do the trick too!

Thanks in advance for your comments!

Hello,

I have a Custom-Made PC from DinoPC.com. It's been working fine until today, I closed it down safley as I always do and took the case off to see how many PCI slots I have. I then unplugged the Hard Drive and plugged it back in. Now the PC cannot recognize the Hard Drive, However, It's definitely all plugged in as I've checked numerous amount of times.

On boot up I get "Loading Operating System" then it takes me to Windows 7 System Restore and Repair. However, none of the options work and ask me to restart by removing the Win7 disc and putting it back in on restart. This doesn't solve anything.

I need a solution to this as my PC is very important and I need it to be working again today. It's a 500GB Hard Drive. I did dislodge the RAM by accident, but I put that back in as I heard it click. Could this be the problem?

I have a problem with my PC. I have Asus A8N-VM CSM motherboard. It had 512 ram and it was bit slow. I cleaned the disk and did defragmentation. Then I unclicked the programs which were making my comp load up slowly. I only kept the antivirus on and unclicked all others. It was still slow compare to my Lapto which has 4gb. I then decided to upgrade ram so bought me transcend ddr 400 (pc3200) 1gb ram X4 sticks. As per the Aida4 software I have installed in comp it mentioned the ram compatible and also as per AMD website my comp can take upto 4gb. I loaded all 4 at the same time and then turned my pc on. All the led's worked and also all the fans were running but there was no beep when the processor starts. I also took the fan and heat sink off to clean it as its not been cleaned for over 4 years now. Also my keyboard and mouse wasn't detected plus my monitor screen kept saying no signal. Then I thought it might be the power so changed the Thermaltake 430w. Still my computer won't start. There is no beep noise and the processor is not starting. My monitor kept showing no signal. I have asked a friend of mine who is IT trained and he advised that if the processor not starting then it could be possible that some connection is loose. I have checked all I know of and still no luck. Can please someone help me or advise what's wrong and how can I fix it? Please help. I have added specs of my pc below. I know its old but I love thisPC and it always stood tall with me and now I don't want to give up on it. Please help.

Hi all,

For starters,i have looked at other forum posts on this site and used the recommendations there for this problem I have and no solution had seemed to help.

I have a dell xps m1530 laptop, about 3 years old. It has handled very rigorous situations, like intense gaming, needy applications, etc. My computer was working fine last night and when I woke up this morning, my computer powered on, went to the disc drive check, fans on and then.... powered to a low power state where you can barely hear the fans. I did the take out battery, hold power button trick and is no better. About a year ago, my inverter wire was pinched due to me opening up my computer to do some dusting. I haven't done any dusting in a while because I am a bit paranoid now.

What could be the problem? I have tried putting new batteries into laptop, but if I have the power cord in laptop, it really shouldn't matter if battery is in or out/good or bad. Any further recommendations or solutions that may resolve my problems? The best part about this is I am full time engineering student who needs his computer all of the time! Thank you for all help in advance!.

The screen is DARK means there is something on screen but it's very hard to see! I tried to update the BIOS and also install the Display driver again also.

(I’m pretty desperate to fix this thing, so I’m going to try to be as thorough as possible)

Before the problem occurred (this may not be important, but just in case): I took my hard drive out to hook it up as a slave (for storage) to a different computer. A new user account was made.

Initially: I hooked the hard drive back up (and the few other things I had to unhook to get to the hard drive when I was taking it out originally) to the computer it was in first. I may have switched some power supply cords around. When I turned the computer on, I heard three beeps. I then found out that three beeps meant a memory error. I didn’t understand how I could have gotten an error like that; because I didn’t even touch the ram when I was taking my hard drive out. I thought maybe the ram got loose somehow. I then took out the ram and the graphics card so I could get to the ram. Then I put the ram back in, in a random order. I didn’t think it would matter, because the ram sticks are all the same (brand and all). Before putting the graphics card back in, I saw a small piece of dust in the pcie port. I couldn’t get it out, and I didn’t think that is what the problem was anyway so I just left it and reinserted the graphics card.

I turned the computer back on and I didn’t get any beeps this time. The computer sounds as though it is starting, and the light flickers like it’s doing something, but then disappears. The num lock light is also on during the initial start up, but then disappears. The graphics card fan is running, and it seems to be working, but I don’t know how else to check to see if it’s working. Everything else seems to be working based on what I know about how to check to see if it’s working, but I could be missing something. The monitor shows no signal when turning on and off again. The computer has been running for a few hours, and it sounds as it would sound if it were running normal idle.

Of the steps I’ve taken so far, I’ve force shutdown my computer (with the power button, not the psu switch) a least a handful of times. I’m guessing in order to fix this problem I’m going to have to do the same many more times. Is there a risk in shutting the system down in this manner multiple times?

Does it sound like I should try using a different graphics card?

Please let me know if you have any ideas related to this problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
