The first Internet-built student satellite was launched Thursday by the Paris-based European Space Agency from Russia's Plesetsk Cosmodrome.
SSETI Express will act as a test bed for many designs, including a cold-gas attitude control system. It will also take pictures of the Earth and function as a radio transponder, ESA officials said.
More than 400 students from 23 universities across Europe worked together via the Internet to build the SSETI Express, the ESA said.
