AS3 How to clear screen

I have a character select screen, and I'm drawing to the screen using the Loader class, then adding the loader as a class, then clearing the screen by removing all the children except for the ones that are used to select the character. But, when I do this, it either glitches up, or it deletes children I need, or just doesn't work. How do I either draw to the screen without killing the children, or just delete them some how?
