Converting MS Office Docs using JAVA

I would like to programmatically convert existing Word and Excel documents into TIFF or PDF using JAVA without having to open the Office document (too slow). Are there any Office 2007 tools that could work or other 3rd party tools. The JAVA conversion program will run on Windows 2003 based servers at eight sites converting a total of 100M documents so I need the fastest and least expensive approach I can get. We do have Office 2007--anything else would need to be purchased. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

iText is an extremely good option for making PDFs from Java and for reading MicroSoft formatt documents just like h3xc0de I too recommend the Apache POI .
