Applet Send variable to a database?

Uh, I don't think I'm on the right lines but is there a way to connect to the internet and send some variables to a database?

Sorry, I don't use databases. But I have seen LOTS of code on forums that connect to servers and access databases.
Use Search or Google for the getConnection method for example
