Ubuntu is a good start but its a skeleton of an operating system. It's because they force it to fit on one CD and don't want to support a DVD full of software. That's why I like distros like http://uberstudent.org that build on the Ubuntu skeleton.

Ubuntu is Linux. Kubuntu is Linux. Debian is Linux. Arch is Linux. the list goes on and on and on ... It's all built on Linux just different distributions. If you're all new, I adivise you to definitely go after Ubuntu(variations like Elementary OS/Kubuntu etc) until you get more familiar with it before moving on into a more specific distribution …

Ubuntu seems to have the problem of either expecting users to have really old or really new hardware, there are consistent holes in the driver databases which is a big no. Fedora has the advantage over several things: rpm which it seems, many high end software developers prefer for some reason. Go look how much crap you have to go through to …

Ubuntu is more suited for standalone installations, a more like single user desktop computing, generally Fedora has many components which easily makes it a better OS for Servers, as well as Office Developer machines.

Ubuntu is based off Debian meaning it uses APT-GET as it's package manager for one thing. Second, Debian is the #1 distro that is 100% NON-Coorerate... unlike RedHat, SuSE and others Debian is 100% created and maintained by the Open Source Community with 0 burdens of business/money to dilute it. Ubuntu is going to be #1 because Debian is already…

Ubuntu should come prepacked with g++. If not:
sudo apt-get install build-essential
For dependencies, then...
sudo apt-get install g++
It's a command-line compiler, meaning you'll have to operate it from the command prompt. If you don't like that idea, you could get code::blocks, and IDE, …

Ubuntu as #1? I am just not a fan of Unity, it is so resource heavy when it comes to less powerful devices. Xubuntu is the best for that, infact I think the look and feel of Xubuntu tops Ubuntu by far. But this is just my opinion because I'd rather have efficiency over looks.
