Wake
on keyboard also can do it. Some keyboards aren't properly grounded and can send small random signals even when no key is pressed. This is usually no problem as they get filtered out in the keyboard processor but the wakeup system might trigger on them. Of course a sure way to turn it off is to literally pull the plug :)

WoL requires certain network properties. It needs to be enabled in the motherboard settings. If its not there, the motherboard does not support
wake
on lan, which means no remote boot.

You can't say that you can't boot a Windows box remotely.
Wake
On LAN is a built in featuer in most motherboards and network cards. Security isn't an issue since MAC addresses aren't routable and if you had a hacker on your local area network, you have bigger problems.

Wake on Lan Problems

The problem with most routers is that they forget the ARP table after a short while. WOL over the internet works for a short period of time, then it doesn't anymore. Has anybody an idea how to set up a router software to be able to
wake
up a device with a specified IP and port number? Do I have to install something like a static route?
Re: Wake on Lan Problems

I use static IP too; but the router forgets after a short while its ARP table, I think. The method ist the standard WOL: send a magic packet to the broadcast address together with the MAS address of the device to
wake
.
