If my network device has for example the lan address 192.168.1.45 how can i access it from the internet? i can access it with no problem from inside my local network, but i cant figure out how i can access it from outside and by entering my routers public IP.

I have also setup the rules on my router firewall to forward traffic coming from WAN to the specified port of the address 192.168.1.45.

Hello all - I have a problem with my wireless connection for my Dell Inspiron 1600. Using Windows XP and a Nelnet wireless router.

Ok so for starters I'm pretty sure I had a virus - my computer was running slow and program errors were popping up due to missing files etc etc...a couple weeks after I noticed my computer would not load properly and the screen would stay black and not proceed to windows. So I did a system restore and presto IT WORKED!

BUT - my wireless internet is not working!!! It says its connected at full strength but when I try to use Mozilla or IE I receive the "cannot find page" error. I've tried to run a hard line to the router and that doesn't work either...I have a second laptop that works perfectly both wirelessly and hard lined. I tried re-installing the driver, didn't work. I tired connecting to another wireless connection, didn't work. Unplugged/reset the router and that didn't work. I DON'T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO - I would format but Dell didn't supply me with my windows disc. Any suggestions - I've attached some screen shots for you all to look at. Thanks alot!

Hi All

I'm new to the forums, and would like to thank you in advance for any help you can offer. Also, I do apologize at the relative simplicity of this question, I'll just get on with it now.

I just set up a wireless network for my home and attempted to set the network up under WPA-PSK TKIP protection. I am using a broadband connection and a Linksys WRT54G router. Upon setting up the passphrase (using the linksys disc and setup wizard) I noticed that it differed from the other encryption types in that the wizard only gave space for me to enter a passphrase and there was no area where it generated an actual Key or a Generate button.

With this I assumed that my Key would simply be my passphrase, however, upon entering the passphrase when attempting to connect to the network it notified me that the Key did not match. I checked and double checked to make sure I was putting in the passphrase accurately, but no dice.

So my question then is whether there is a problem with a network, or if I need to find a way to figure out what my passphrase would encrypt into. And if that's the case - how would I do that.

Hi,

I want to finally set up my home office correctly. I currently have DSL on one Windows PC. I want to create a small LAN with shared Internet, file sharing and possibly file back-up. I have 2 Windows machines (XP on one and soon Vista 64 on one) and two OSX Macs.

My questions:

Do I need a server to share the Internet and files or can it all be done with a router and switch? Is a server preferable? (I would pick a Linux variety - no Windows)

I have a couple of printers to network too. Is a print server device better or just print server software?

If there is a Linux server, can it share the Internet connection or is a router still needed to assign IP addresses to each machine? (I believe Verizon only provides dynamic IP's on my current plan and I would rather not pay them for additional IP's)

Thanks guys!

Please forgive me if this question is too elementary for this forum.

I have set up a small 2 machine home network, using Windows XP on both computers. The network is set up by connecting both computers to an ADSL router, and then going through the Windows XP new network connection wizard (that's the extent of my networking knowledge!)

At the moment, both machines have access to the internet through the router.

Can anyone tell me if there is a way to allow the computers to share files, as they do at the moment, but only allow one of the computers to have access to the internet? I would like to keep all my internet traffic on one computer only, so that I can remove all resident security software from the other one. This would allow me to keep as much CPU space as possible for high demand programs, such as Photoshop.

I have looked at my software firewall (Online Armor free) and can't see any way of blocking access to the net, but allowing a local network.

Machine 1 runs Windows XP Pro SP3, and the other runs Windows XP Home SP3.
I run Avast! Free, Online Armor Free, Superantispyware Pro, Sypware Blaster, Spybot S&D on both machines. My router is an iConnectAccess 624.
