POwerbook G4 OS 10.4.8

okay my problem started awhile ago but I thought nothing was wrong so I ignored it but it spread. One day I tried to go on real player but it said my computer is running mac OS X 10.4.8. This version of RealPLayer requires Mac OS X 10.2 with safari or X10.2.8 or later. So i downloaded the latest version of safari but when I try to open it it would pop up for less then a second on the dock then disappear. Eventually, this problem spread to the other apps. such as firefox. Now I don't have a browser I can use on that computer and I don't know what is wrong.

A really generic answer, would be to run Disk Utility and Repair Permissions. I bet that might just do the trick.
