In a toolchain an XML is currently used to generate sourcecode and documentation (by oAW). By introduction of this XML -&gt; source generation, I reduced the complexity of configuration of the corresponding software component (which has been done using pointers, structs and tables).<br />

Unfortunately, the XML file itself is also not self-explanatory... In fact it represents a complex model.<br />
<br />
For the users it would be great to have some kind of GUI to create and modify this XML. I'm very experienced with .NET/Windows Forms and a little experienced with Java, EMF and JFACE.<br />
<br />
But when I'm thinking about either of those I'm fed up... I don't want to re-implement the same things over and over again, like save/load, copy/paste, etc.<br />

My question to you guys:<br />
Do you know any (bether/more efficient) technology that can be used for GUI development, which itself is used to create/modify XMLs?<br />

I have a number of distributed PCs each with MS SQL server and a database. I need to maintain the databases (schemer changes, table changes, F. key changes etc.). I have a main sever where I maintain the database manually.<br />
What I would like to do is: after the main database has been updated on the main server, have the distributed servers automatically receive the new update scrip’s and the databases updated.<br />
This is probably a large and complicated task. If I can be pointed in the right direction how this to be achieved; what services SQL server has to offer, or do I need other special software, I would be very grateful.<br />

User chooses a field name and enters some value and submits that.<br />
<br />
Web application (presentation layer) takes user input and transfers the request to the web service (using automatic .NET XML serialization). So it seems data transfer object pattern can be used here.<br />
<br />
Then my web service transforms that DTO to some valid query. Let's assume we are using some OR/M tool to query it for objects which satisfies the query. Also let's assume that OR/M tool offers some easy way to construct dynamic queries (BTW, LINQ-to-SQL has some problems with this).<br />
<br />
So the question is - how to better pass data from user form to the data access layer (OR/M tool) so the dynamic query could be generated with less hassle? It would be awful to have web method for each field like this: GetCustomerByName(string name), GetCustomerByCity ... and so on. Then I have to analyze the user input and call appropriate web method. But maybe it is the right way?<br />
<br />
I prefer some method GetCustomersByFilter, so then I can almost directly pass the request to web service and then can convert the request to query in OR/M servicing component. But what to pass to this GetCustomersByFilter method? Dictionary with field names as keys? Many nullable parameters? Custom objects?<br />
<br />
It would be nice to use the same data structures that are used to pass data to the web application - the same data transfer objects, I guess. Like this:<br />
Customer[] GetCustomersByFilter(Customer filter);<br />
<br />
but then I have to allow all the fields of Customer to be nullable so I can later see which fields are used as filters. And if that does not correspond my business/validation rules (if rules say - some property cannot be null) than it would be a bit confusing. Also if I would like to use some generator to create web forms based on my DTO objects, it would be impossible to mark required fields easily just by detecting if some field is nullable or not.<br />
<br />
So maybe I need some other object, like CustomerFilter with all nullable fields? Wouldn't it be overkill to have two classes for each object (also, accounting that those DTOs are converted to domain entities later - then we have even more classes)?<br />
<br />
This dynamic filtering issue is really bugging me. Has anybody any experience with that, especially using domain driven design?<br />

<span style="font-style:italic">From an early age I have always been extremely interested in computing. From playing games, doing School work and discovering the inner workings of computers and what else they could do. I remember in School wanting to take advantage of the technology available, I would word-process my work whereas other people’s work would be hand written. <br />
<br />
My interest in computers has never left me, only expanded more. I self taught myself HTML and CSS at an early age so I could create small websites and if I had an error I would re-write the particular part again so I learnt. <br />
<br />
I went onto discover more about Web Technology where I self-taught myself PHP and MYSQL by practicing, mistakes and reading books. I remember having the desire to develop a user system and giving myself aims and targets to achieve this. The practical aspects of programming doesn’t just interest me, I am also interested in the theory of the languages.  <br />
<br />
My A-Levels in Software Development helped expand my understanding on computing. Introducing new, complex and exciting languages like C++, which I excelled in. When I was given a task I was looking at different ways I could go about the task in another, advanced way to expand my understanding more. I remember doing my Web Server Scripting assignment (“PHP”) over a weekend a year before it had to be handed in. I liked every aspect of the course and didn’t find the units too demanding or challenging. <br />
<br />
Aside from College work I have done some personal projects in my spare time, working on different platforms. These include:<br />
<br />
•	Multi-Page Websites<br />
•	E-commerce Software<br />
•	User systems<br />
•	Forums<br />
<br />
I was also researching the creation of Compilers and Interpreters to build my own language but at the time I didn’t feel I had the right skills but it has always been an ambition of mine, which I hope to fulfil one day. <br />
<br />
Asides from education I also feel that it is important to take time off and relax. I spend time socialising with friends and meeting new people. My hobby is fishing as I enjoy the relaxation and a way of escaping from the everyday stresses. I have also learnt to keep my personal life and College life separate. <br />

A team of boffins at IBM have been speaking about how they have arrived at something of a milestone breakthrough: a supercomputer that simulates a brain in near real time and has more cerebral cortex capacity than a cat.<br />

The cognitive computing team which is headed up by IBM Research managed to achieve what it says are &quot;significant advances in large-scale cortical simulation&quot; as well as &quot;a new algorithm that synthesizes neurological data&quot; in time for a presentation called '<a rel="nofollow" class="t" href="http://www.modha.org/C2S2/2009/11182009/content/SC09_TheCatIsOutofTheBag.pdf" target="_blank">The cat is out of the bag</a>'  at the SC09 supercomputing conference this week. <br />
<br />
Together it is being suggested that these advances mean we are getting increasingly close to being able to build not just an advanced computer chip, but a truly cognitive computing chip. That is, in other words, a computer system which can both simulate and emulate the brain’s abilities in terms of sensation, perception, action, interaction and cognition. <br />
<br />
The IBM Research scientists, together with colleagues from Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, performed what is said to be the first &quot;real-time cortical simulation of the brain that exceeds the scale of a cat cortex and contains 1 billion spiking neurons and 10 trillion individual learning synapses&quot;. Working with researchers from Stanford University, the IBMers also developed a supercomputing algorithm which can &quot;noninvasively measure and map the connections between all cortical and sub-cortical locations within the human brain using magnetic resonance diffusion weighted imaging&quot;. This ability to map the internal wiring of the brain is central to the ability to solve the puzzle that is how our brains manage to represent and process so much information.<br />

It doesn't take a genius to realise that the networked world is becoming like a giant brain, massively interconnected and having to process vast amounts of exponentially growing data. &quot;Learning from the brain is an attractive way to overcome power and density challenges faced in computing today&quot; Josephine Cheng, IBM Fellow, says &quot;as the digital and physical worlds continue to merge and computing becomes more embedded in the fabric of our daily lives, it’s imperative that we create a more intelligent computing system that can help us make sense the vast amount of information that's increasingly available to us, much the way our brains can quickly interpret and act on complex tasks&quot;.</div> ]]></content:encoded>

I dont know if this is the right forum to post in, but i cant find a better suited one. And i havent been able to find the information on google either.<br />

My problem is... At the moment I have a C# application which works over the internet with 1-40 clients and one server. The clients needs informations from the server kind of often. <br />
Because of simplicity and avoiding an upper layer protocol, Ive implemented .net remoting in my solution, so i can pass objects remotely.<br />
But when using remoting it isnt possible to push information to the clients, instead the clients have to poll the server for information. The fact that the server cannot contact the clients, makes alot of functions tideous.<br />
And when using ordinary sockets the server cannot contact the clients either, unless the clients configure their router/firewall they are behind, which of course I am not interested in.<br />
<br />
So is there a way to make use of the comfortability remoting provides? And use some sort of push technology?<br />
How does the popular IM networks like Microsofts Live Messenger works? <br />
I mean, this must be a very common problem.<br />

Hope you can give my some leads and insight :)<br />

I know this sounds crazy but believe me it's been giving me creeps for such a long time.  I've been studying software engineering for 2 years and done a bit of programming in several languages.  But the problem is Maths.Yeah, I admit that I didn't do my maths homework in high school days ;).  Recently, I've been reading a bit about voice recognition and face recognition. I'm sure ya guys have probably guessed it requires extensive amount of maths and all those weird characters are seriously giving me a headache.  I just wanna ask ya guys opinions on what sort of maths that a computer programmer should master and I'd be much appreciated if any of you can point me out to a right direction. But now the true identity of the Diary of a London Call Girl blogger has been revealed, by Belle de Jour herself. The blog, based upon a secret life covering 14 months as a high class escort and prostitute in London, spawned a successful national newspaper column, a best-selling book and even a TV movie. <br />

For a number of years now speculation has been rife as to who Belle de Jour really was, with the media 'outing' everyone from the editor of the Erotic Review (Rowan Pelling) to best selling novelist and author of How To Lose Friends And Alienate people, Toby Young. While the notion of Belle de Jour being a balding man was amusing, the actual revelation of identity has been no less shocking. The woman behind the blog, and who did indeed work as a £300 per hour hooker in London six years ago, is actually now a respected research scientist called Dr Brooke Magnanti.<br />
<br />
Dr Magnanti is a developmental neurotoxicology and cancer epidemiology specialist, and turned to prostitution in 2003 when she was having money troubles during the final stages of her PhD thesis. The 34 year old told the <a rel="nofollow" class="t" href="http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/books/article6917260.ece" target="_blank">Sunday Times</a> that she has no regrets and that while she &quot;did have another job at one point, as a computer programmer&quot; she kept up with the prostitution as &quot;it was so much more enjoyable&quot;.<br />

I've taken Calc I, II, and I'm currently taking a  Discrete Math course.  I have to take one more math class, and I think I've narrowed it down to two classes: elementary linear algebra and introduction to mathematical proof.  I was just wondering if you knew any applications of linear algebra/ mathematical proof in comp sci.  I think linear algebra has importance when talking about graphics, but that's about it.<br />

On the other hand, Computers nowadays can be very helpful, but also can be used to steel information, terrorism, and other crimes.<br />
If we do make better computers, they will eventually fall in the wrong hands, and be a more efficient tool for bad.<br />
<br />
How do you think we can prevent it ?<br />

I believe there might be a way to prevent it, but not by programming security policies, because that can be easily get passed through back doors.<br />
<br />
I believe there must be a secure way to make better computers  :)<br />

She believes that automation of the inventory control in the shop would result in a number of benefits. She would like you to produce a feasibility study for the proposed replacement of her current paper based system with an electronic information system. You have decided to advise her how she could proceed before committing to a full systems development project. You have decided to produce a poster to explain your ideas.<br />

imagine you have to 2 water solution one is water the other one is detergent, what i have to do is to create a code that will allow me to mesure the level of misture between the 2 solution being the variables the time and the position.<br />

Another exemple, imagine you have a glass and you have a solution of water and sugar completlly dissolved, in the begining you have a level of 0 misture, it means you have 50% sugar and 50% water, as the time goes bye the sugar starts to get on the bottom of the glass and the water (supostly without sugar on the top of the glass) so on the bottom you have a value of -1 that tells you that there is only sugar and on the top you have a value of 1 that tells you that there is only water there but as you change the position of the mesure the value changes allowing you to know if is has more sugar or water, and as the time goes bye in the same place the value also changes more positive on the top and more negative on the bottom.<br />

Can anyone help me creating this?<br />

5. What does the leave function do? I've read around for this but I can't find anything that makes much sense.<br />
6. To what address will ret jump the instruction pointer to?<br />
7. What does the assembly look like for the code that is executed the main function exits?<br />
8. Another thing that is being getting at me is: why does C++ CDECL calling convention pass argument right to left? It seems counter intuitive to me as it rewards doing right to left as the order of evaluation of the parameters which is also counter intuitive to me.<br />

The main problems is that the ideas I can think of are either 1) not good enough or 2) been done before/other ways of doing it, so maybe improve on something that already exists like online backup? I don’t know.. &gt;&lt;<br />
<br />
Not sure if this will help, but I’ll say my interests anyway: sports, computer games, music, astronomy, security and human computer interaction.<br />

I'm gonna be taking graphics next year and I've been kinda thinking ahead. One of the things we have to do is make either a ray tracer or a rasterizer. However I can find almost no info online about how to actually write a rasterizer. There's a fair amount of info on ray tracers, but I want to do something that hasn't been done too often before (almost everyone writes a ray tracer) There's also the fact that I'm interested in real time rendering, which can be far better done by a rasterizer than a ray tracer...<br />
However... I can find almost no info on them. Is there anyone who can give me some info on them, or possibly a link somewhere with some info on them? I've been toddling around Google for a bit but haven't found anything interesting. And the wikipedia explanation is a little vague.<br />
Any advice greatly appreciated, thanks<br />

Neither the conclusion itself, nor how the guy came to that conclusion.<br />

So I have a method contractStack() which is called when the length of an array of the same class is greater than INITIAL_CAPACITY of 8, and the size of the stack (contents within the array) is less than or equal to  one-quarter of the array's length.<br />

i.e. top &lt;= (Array.length / 4)<br />
<br />
Now, I have to prove that it is a bad idea to call this method when the size is less than one-half instead of one-quarter of the array's length.<br />

i.e. top &lt;= (Array.length /2)<br />

The instructions say:<br />
&quot;In order to see this is a bad idea, show the worst case amortized cost of a sequence of n operations on the stack would be Big Omega(n) instead of O(1), if contractStack was used like this.<br />

I understand the question, but I don't understand how the cost of the operations would be more expensive. Anyone have a good guess at what i'm supposed to do?<br />

I am in the final year of my Computer Science with Management degree. I have chosen to do my final year project (dissertation) on a Document Copying Tracker. To track how one document was composed from another(like an hierarchy - parent and offspring) I will have to incorporate an editor. <br />

This service is offered by many programs on the net. However I am not able to find any documentation on how to make one. I have no idea of how to undertake such a project with no guidance from my tutor. Any help on where to start will be much appreciated! <br />

Secondly, I want to clarify if what I think is true: there exists many different notations, big-o, little-o, theta, etc, and all of it describes the run time differently. I think big-o describes the upper bounds of an algorithm's cost or something? With that, how do you describe and analyze an algorithm? In class, we get asked what the worst case run time is of something, and the answer is always theta of 1, or theta of something. How can I tell?<br />
<br />
Lastly, what does amortized cost mean?<br />
