what dimension do i need for my banner?

i have been learning fireworks 8 at the college. i was told to try it at home. since i have a copy of the latest cs4, i installed the package. but to my horror, there is no easy to use options in filter, no eye candy or other effects, is it my installation, which i didnt get wrong, or is it cs4 is the ******* and there is no ready made effect?? i dont know what to change in the filter they are just numbers to change do you know what i mean?!:S

calibri font display is unclear if text is read from xml file

problem in short - when the flash file reads text from a xml file, the font display is unclear. when the text is embedded in the flash, it appears clearly

problem in detail -

i would appreciate your help because i am unable to resolve this problem despite my best efforts. please see '~about.fla'. it has been decompiled from a swf file as the original source code was not available (can this be causing the problem?). the xml folder resides in the same folder as '~about.fla'. it contains 'about.xml'. you can download these files at http://rapidshare.com/files/30694628...d_from_xml.zip

i discovered a problem - if you view 'about.swf' - when you click on 'history' link, you can see that the text is distorted. this text is read from the xml file. but is you click on the 'key people' link, you can see that the text appears perfectly. this text is embedded in the flash itself.

please help me to resolve this problem. thank you in advance for you time and efforts.

Flv video files not playing on my website?

Hi everyone,

I wonder if anyone can help me with this problem im having.

I have a website which has a video page on it. We are using the flow video player which plays flv video files. I recently uploaded some videos all of them in flv file format and most of them are playing perfectly but now i am having problems getting some of the uploaded videos to play. One of the videos in particular was playing perfectly and now it will not play at all. When you click the link where the thumbnail is and it goes to the video player page it seems like its attempting to load on the video player but then nothing happens and the video player itself does not even display any controls ie the stop, play, rewind buttons etc.

I just wanted to know if anyone has encountered this same problem? And if anyone had any ideas what could be causing these problems? I have since tried to upload even more videos in the flv file format and none of them are playing. I also want to point out that all of these videos that are not playing on the website video player are successfully playing on my computer.

Hi codemasters, I'm new to this forum and I already have a question which I'm pretty sure u will help me out to find a solution.

I want to play a mc when the mouse is over. And when the mouse is out I want to rewind the mc. I have tried several things but nothing seems to work.

When the mouse is over it plays the mc, but when the mouse is out I get the following error:

Error #1502: A script has executed for longer than the default timeout period of 15 seconds.

replacing dynamic navbar text using XML

the q in the last for loop hits all 5 links as 0 1 2 3 4.

So im now stuck trying to think of what to do next to get each dynamic text from the xml placed into each link - link01 link02 link03 link04 and link05

My friend has designed a website in Fireworks/HTML and has just saved all her images in Fireworks/PNG format. She has about 300 images all designed in Fireworks but they have all been saved in a format where someone can download them and open them in Fireworks and they will be editable (as vectors).
She wanted to know if there is any way to remove all the editable information from the FW images without re-saving them all.

Hi,

I have a movie clip called

dsp_albumcover

(Already created and on the stage, instance name is dsp_albumcover)

I also have a variable with a .jpg file (Can be changed to any other though) defined as

var albumimg:String = '/albumcover.jpg';

How do I load this in to dsp_albumcover?
dsp_albumcover is 128 pixles high x wide and the image is the same dimentions.

Autogenerating photo gallery

J ust want to be able to dump photos into a directory on my server and be able to generate a simple of thumbnails and a way of looking at them and the photos. I tried Autogenerating Photo Gallery (AGG).

I uploaded the package as it came with its sample photos to
http://lgrossman.com/pics/AGG/ and it works fine. The sample thumbs appear and link to the full photos.

I then created a new test gallery for some of the photos from my Palm Centro. I had to edit the php in AGG to recognize my thumbs which were named xxx_t.jpg and that worked. The thumbs appear. I didn't change anything else, but when I click on a thumb the application appears to be looking for the image but never resolves.

I want it to open in a unframed position in the web page, I have no idea how to write the html for this. I have saved all the versions of this movie into the clients media folder, but just dont know how to insert it into the html and have the movie start playing upon the web page loading.

I'm building a small web-site (for a restaurant) and I made photo gallery using Flash (it has a lot of .as files, and attaches images using XML). The problem is embedding this gallery into my site. I'm using Dreamweaver, and I inserted it as .swf file but I can't see any images.
When I run swf alone it works great. Do I need to include this XML files into my site??
I made gallery via the video tutorial, and I have this .js file (named RunActiveContent) which I also included in my site.
Can anyone help me please?

ok i'll try to explain it simply and clearly. i have looked for a solution for a long time but they either didnt work and were too complicated for my little skill.
so i have a main .swf which im working on. i then have buttons which when clicked, launch a panorama. the problem is that this panorama is created with a 3rd party program and is a .swf. now. i curretly have the follwoing script to launch the panorama

however this opens the swf in a new tab of my web browser. now that is not too bad, but i would like and it would be much better if the panorama would open inside my current swf. i remember i managed to do this. (sorry i forgot the code for it!!!) but when this was done, it would cover all my other buttons. i tried different things with changing levels and those sort of things, but nothing seemed to worked. (i was able to display a button on top of the swf but its AS woudlnt work)

does anybody know how to do this? can someone explain it quite simply and in detail? i just want to load an swf in my project, and have a button on top of it with which i can unload this swf. (note that i cannot edit the settings of the panorama swf except for its size and dimensions and stuff, i cannot add a button or AS into it)

Greetings - - I am new to daniweb and am also am at my wits end with Dreamweaver MX. I converted a Adobe Illustrator file that encompasses jpeg artwork and RGB process colors to a GIF file.

No matter what I do, I get unwanted white space at the top of the main table (above the picture and Sports in a Maximum Security Red Banner). I set all the CSS to 0 for the margins, even getting rid of the borders - - but still get that stubborn white space. The original AI document was set up as a transparency, but I also changed that to artboard, as there is message about colors not working properly if converted to process (which would not use in web anyway?)

Restore photoshop

Something went wrong with my computer and every program was shut down, including Photoshop with something I was working on.

I have the picture saved down as a jpg-file but not a Photoshop-file :( is their any way I can solve this? :(

Image flickering

I am doing a flash slideshow animation which animate from left to right by changing their x position. And I am using the tween which is a package of flash

while moving the image is jerking a lot.

How to avoid flickering of images while moving from one position to another position, it sucks me.

I know it will be possible with bitmap class, but It have some limitation of image width. I had attached 6 images one by one. Please help me to solve this. I am using AS3.0

JPEG as a Container

I was told by one of my friends in a high place that you can make a JPEG into a Container to carry what every you need..... My idea is to put a Java Script in the Container that makes the picture uncopyable to print page and right click..... Also would like to put a note pad into the Image for copywrites information. The Question is........ HOW DO YOU MAKE A JPEG IMAGE A CONTAINER......

gotoAndPlay scene or frame

This is killing me... It seems simple.
I have a button that I want to goto a movie clip. I have tried numerous ways of doing this. My first attempt was creating a new scene with the movie clip and everything. Although the actionscript on my first scene could not locate the frame on the second scene. It kept telling me it couldn't find it, although I kept checking and seeing that everything was correct. So now I realized hey, I'll just put a new frame and the tell it to gotoandplay that next frame... Although the whole animation starts over when that occurs. here is my code:

182, is the next frame... I've tried having next frame, it does the same thing, i've also tried it w/out the quotes, it does the same thing. The same thing being restarting the animation...

Key steps To building a successful website

Design
Design like art is subjective. But it's safe to say that there are some golden rules you should always strive to follow. Keep it clean, simple and elegant.

Your visitors should not have to think about what your website is about, or worse, how to use it. They should intuitively grasp your message (strong and clear call to actions), as well as be able to navigate (clear menu architecture) within seconds upon landing on your web page. Study and internalize websites that are commonly held in high regard. Reflect on how and why they “work” and develop your designs and creative eye based on that. Always design appropriately to fit your target audience and industry.

Navigation and site architecture should not exclude search engine spiders. Minimize Flash to banners and graphic animations and avoid using Javascript menus. Always include a text link based sitemap so the entire site structure is accessible for the search engines.

Coding
Always ensure that your coding is clean and concise. Use 100% CSS whenever possible. Push the important stuff (content) as high up in the HTML code as possible. The repeated blocks (e.g. Left column menus, horizontal menus etc) should be kept as low in the HTML code. All CSS stylesheets and javascript should be kept externalized. For example, .

Meta Tags, Keywords, On-site SEO
Research your industry, competitors and tools thoroughly to compile a list of keywords for your website pages. I find Google's Adwords Tool to be very useful in determining keyword traffic, competitiveness and relevancy. Be realistic about the keywords you want to target. It's fine to try to go for top rankings in “real estate”, but unless you have a huge budget, you'd be in for a frustrating experience. Try to go for the low hanging fruit (e.g. “City+Real Estate”) initially, and then expand from there when you have a steady income stream from your site.

Once you have compile your target keywords, be sure to follow these basic on-site SEO rules.

• Unique title and description meta tags for each page.
• Spread your keywords in the title, description and H1 tags, but don't over do it.
• ALWAYS ensure the keywords you choose are relevant to the content on that specific page.

Content
Quality content is key for a successful website. Content that is topical, compelling and well composed will always acquire links naturally over time. Research is vital for creating quality content. You don't need to have insider information or doctorate's degree in your field. The information is out there, you just need to be smart about how to piece it together. For example, you can compile information that has not been presented before. (Comparison of green widgets through a 10 year cycle).

Quality always trumps quantity. It is better to have 10 solid articles, than 100 mediocre ones.

Hosting
Always try to get a dedicated IP for your domain. And ALWAYS use a host company that is reputable (doesn't host sites from undesirable industries) and has a solid up-time.

Link Building
If you can afford it, submit your site to Yahoo Directory and Business.com. Dmoz is also a highly recommended directory, however, getting listed in one of the main categories is next to impossible these days. Try to drill down to a smaller or localized category for a better chance of inclusion.

Nearly all keyword sector has an authority web hub or directory. Take the time to review their guidelines and submit your site.

As mentioned above, solid content will get you very far in terms of attracting free links. You can also develop a widget to share (e.g. Weather.com's free weather widget tool) that contains a link back to your website.

Reciprocal or link exchanges, do not work as well as it once did. But that doesn't mean you should totally avoid doing this. Research and contact sites that are “authoritative” or ranking well in your desired keywords, and ask for a link exchange. Your success rate will be low unfortunately, so I leave it up to you to decide the time vs reward ratio.

Stop sound in a movieclip (Flash)

Hello everybody, I need to load an external movie clip using loadMovie(). This external movie clip is playing some sound by default. I need to stop sound for that movie clip only, but not for my entire movie.

I don't have the .fla file for that external movie, and fail to disassemble it.

Does anyone has a solution? Thanks
