Hello,

I am new to this community and am happy I found you!
I was just been told that I should use a redirect on my own site to redirect the xy to www xy
so that the search-engines wouldn't think those were two different sites. Sounded logical and I did so.

But afterwards I had the idea, because I'm only experimenting with my site yet, I could setup two slightly different pages, just trying a different set of keywords.
Well, that wouldn't work with those examples above as I can't access to setup those above addresses differently, but I could setup something as different subdomains.

Or would Google find that suspicous and penalize my site?

Thanks for reading!
Cheers,

1. Whether any Blog Commenting (even related blogs) is taken as spam or not. I read Google Webmaster Central Blog, which says Blog Commenting is taken as spam. Even I have informed in this forum that blog commenting is spam. But my earlier blog comments are taken as links by Google. How this is possible. I am a little confused on this.

2. Google says Meta Description is for readers. I also read in forums that the Meta Description and Meta Keywords are not taken seriously by Google. But my feeling is that Meta Description is also considered by Google for Keyword Ranking.

I request some learned / experienced person from this forum to clear my doubt as there are many people have the same doubt.

Thanks in advance.

The media seems to have been a-buzz this week following the release of the top search terms from 14.6 million searches picked up by parental control service OnlineFamily.Norton - mainly because it 'revealed' that kids are searching for sex online.

I am a parent myself, of young kids, and while of course I was shocked to discover that 7 year olds were looking for porn (and that search term was in position number 4 in the 7 and under age group according to Symantec which operates the service) I certainly would not get my knickers in a twist over finding 13 year olds searching for sex online (also number 4 in the teens group popular search list).

It's interesting to note that both boys and girls were searching for sex, although the boys had sex and porn in positions 4 and 5 respectively whereas the girls moved Taylor Swift up into the 4 slot and sex was at 5.

But is it really such a big deal that 13-18 years olds include sex and porn in their top search terms? No, of course not, kids have always been interested in sex as they go through puberty and the only difference these days to when I was that age is that the Internet makes it a lot easier to go look at naughty pictures.

I had to pay a few pennies to sneak a look at the Playboy magazine an older boy had sneaked into school. What is a bigger deal is that sex isn't a more popular search in the age group. Above sex are YouTube, Facebook and Google, with MySpace nestled between sex and porn.

Pretty much the same is true in the 8 to 12 year old group where sex sits at number 4, surrounded by YouTube, Google, Facebook, Club Penguin, Yahoo and eBay.

I do agree that finding porn sitting alongside Games, Club Penguin and YouTube is rather disconcerting in the 7 and under age group though and would suggest that this does not suggest kids are growing up earlier just that peer pressure and celebrity/media coverage of sex has meant that kids are more likely to get exposed to the word 'porn' at a much younger age.

And that says less about the Internet and more about the parenting, in my humble opinion. It also makes for a rather good argument that perhaps parental control software is becoming an essential item rather than an optional extra these days?

The full list, across all age groups, for the kids' top 100 searches of 2009 is:

Find related sites (best not be competitor sites!) and perhaps contact the webmaster via email for a free link exchange, i.e. you link to his site, he links to your site.

Alternatively, if you have money to spend, you can purchase a link on a webpage. Normally, pages which receive a lot of visitors, or have a high Google pageranking (you can view this with the free Google toolbar, or use one of the many online tools around the web) will cost the most.

Forum signatures are a good starting point. Use anchor text links, such as the ones in my sig. Even though I have 4000 or so posts which have a sig, only a few of them will be of any benefit, not all the links will be indexed. But, it's worth getting as much as you can.

Beware of the sandbox theory however, apparently if you build up a vast number of links for a new website in a short period of time, consequences such as dissappearing from Google search results can occur!

News Story Ecosia saves almost 2 million yards of rain forest

Earlier this week I read a very interesting article (http://www.daniweb.com/news/story244378.html)written by my colleague Davey Winder about the new search engine Ecosia (http://www.ecosia.org).

Earlier this week I read a very interesting article written by my colleague Davey Winder about the new search engine Ecosia. After reading Davies article, I decided to do some research comparing Ecosia vs. the monster search engine Google. Ecosia claims that one search via Google uses around the same amount of energy as it would take to power one light bulb for an hour.

I found Ecosia’s claims very interesting so I decided to do some research. A non-eco-friendly light bulb usually uses about 60 Watts of energy with that said, if Google received 1000 searches in an hour that would use approximately 60,000 watts of energy.

I find it needless to say that Google probably receives tens of thousands of searches per hour, so what are they doing to counter act their massive use of energy? As far as I know they aren’t doing anything at all, unlike Ecosia the newcomer to the game who donates a big portion of their profits to organizations that help save the rain forest.

I had trouble believing that Ecosia was as good as it sounds until I noticed Bing owned by Microsoft is helping power this new search engine. I don’t think Microsoft would take part in a company that they thought would fail. Actually I’m sure they wouldn’t, I know not many people like Microsoft but you have to admire their business strategies Even if some of them are unethical.

Okay so I've said how eco-friendly ecosia is but what else do they offer? They offer privacy unlike other search engines. According to their video they delete your searches after 48 hours and does not inspect your searches or sell it like some search engines. If Ecosia is really doing everything they claim that they are, Google will have to step up their game if they want to stay in the game.

According to a Search Software Quality survey of 492 IT professionals, 22 percent struggle most with requirements gathering. Yet the same group said they spend less than 12 percent of their time doing it. Not so at LSI Corp., which probably made some of the storage silicon in the computer you're using right now. "During development phase, we take an idea to 10 choice customers and ask what they think," said Steve Hochberg, senior director of high performance computing at LSI. "We ask where the requirements are going in two years and whether [our idea] meets them. 'Are we headed in the right direction?' "

LSI customers include supercomputing centers at Lawrence Livermore and Oak Ridge national laboratories, and Hochberg said the customer meetings usually involve high-level directors there. "He's got a doctorate in engineering, electrical engineering and maybe one in physics," he said, and the value such customers bring to the requirements gathering phase is immeasurable. "This person, in one head, has the ability to tell us how to construct controller boards and do power efficiency. So we allow them to be uniquely involved in the process."

But customer involvement doesn't end there. The roles of the ALM project manager and his team must adapt to incorporate customers during development, testing and pre-deployment phases. "The last time we released a product," Hochberg said, "we sold a petabyte of storage into Oak Ridge about 12 months prior to it being generally available to an OEM partner." During that time, Oak Ridge provided recommendations on how to improve the product. "They tell us how to tweak the firmware and tune it as it goes along. If they can't get a hand in tuning it along the way, they know they won't get a product that's made for them."

"We have a funnel of innovation that occurs when when we make a product," continues Hochberg. "We involve product managers, product development and there's a formal interactive process with supercomputing end customers and OEMs. They're involved in [all aspects of] the development of our product. It's a group thing." The result is more consistency, on-time delivery and the trust of your end customer. "The more they trust you, the more they will commit to you and buy your products. Because they know that in 18 months, you will come out with what you say."

A new search engine officially launches today, the same day as the World Climate Summit in Copenhagen commences. According to Ecosia you can help battle climate change by switching away from Google and here's how.

Not only will the new guy on the search block give 80% of the advertising revenue it earns to a World Wildlife Fund environmental protection project to help save the Amazon rain forest (and therefore reduce global warming and save polar bears in case you were wondering) but it also reckons each search will use much less electricity than Google

Ecosia will also be running on 'green' electricity and apparently will save up to 2 square metres of rain forest when compared to sites like Google which, according to Ecosia at least, produces that same amount of carbon dioxide when making one search as a light bulb does when switched on for an hour.

Search engines claiming to be green are nothing new, who could forget the Black Google for example? But whereas that simply changed the background colour from white to black and claimed to consume a whole heap less electricity as a result (a claim that was poo-pooed by many) Ecosia is doing something tangible by actually donating money to the climate fight.

The Berlin-based search start up is confident it will be the greenest search engine on the planet, with founder Christian Kroll arguing that thanks to advertising "search engines earn billions every year" and there can be an "eco-friendly way of using these huge profits" which is why he is donating 80% of all advertising revenue to the WWF Amazon project.

Great. Assuming that enough people switch away from Google to actually earn any advertising revenue in the first place that is.

Of course that's not the only problem facing Ecosia. Other green engines have been powered by Google and so the argument has always been that they actually leave a bigger carbon footprint as in effect people are using Google and another search farm to do the work, when just one would be better and less harmful. Ecosia does not use Google, but it does use Yahoo and Bing so maybe there is still something in this argument after all.

1. Links ARE Usability

Foremost, links provide simple navigation between documents on a website. But in addition to regular site navigation, links dramatically increase the usability of site information since words within an article can be linked - or extended out in a tree-like manner - to many other documents of importance, like definitions, resources and items of interest, on-going, without interrupting the flow of the originating concept.

2.Links Create Direct Traffic

Clicking a link from a trusted source is one of the most popular ways for people to find a new website. If a user is on a website they trust, they are likely to follow links that it recommends - or at the least, users will follow links that make the destination site appear to provide some valuable information.

3.Links Build Search Engine Trust in Your Site

There is no doubt that link score is one of the most important factors the major search engines consider when determining where websites are ranked. The reasoning is simple: if you have many links pointing to your site from other sites, your content must contain quality, important information. A link is like a vote. Although links from important 'authority' sites carry more 'vote weight', ultimately, total 'link/vote score' is one of the heaviest algorithmic factors considered in rankings.

Just yesterday, Google announced that they will display personalized search results based on usage - regardless if you are signed in or not. So this means that they now track the search activity of All 'enabled' (by default) users and display customized search results. They are tracking 'signed-out' users via a cookie linked to the web browser. Users *can* opt out of "search customizations" but i'm confident that a majority of people will not...

This has already raised some privacy concerns over at Search Engine Land, but from an SEO perspective, I see it as another shift in favoritism toward the "white label" web destinations. For example, if you have a niche travel site but the end users mostly clicks on Expedia or Trip Advisor, it is likely that they will be displayed ahead of your site in the SERPs. Even though you might have the more relevant and resourceful website. I'm interested in hearing everyone's thoughts about this announcement...

Optimizing Your Web Site With SEO Organic Techniques

SEO organic methods take more work from the individual, but is a safer and, in the end, more effective way to optimize a web site for search engines. In a way, Organic SEO helps to keep Internet “pollution” to a minimum, so you’re also helping the virtual environment! In the following paragraphs, you’ll find a few easy ways to use this type of search engine optimization.

You’re no doubt familiar with the basic concepts of search engine optimization, but are you familiar with SEO organic methods? While search engine optimization is a very important aspect to any online business’ marketing plan, it’s become increasingly standardized and mechanized. Many SEO services and applications simply use the same basic plan to enhance a web site’s search engine rankings.

This has led to a lot of marketers using nasty search engine optimization methods to get results. These types of methods can be great for generating traffic, but in the end they make the Internet an uglier place. These methods, known as “Black Hat” SEO methods, are just a bad idea. Not only do they frustrate potential users of your web site, they may not even work forever…

You see, Google and other search engines are constantly looking for ways to defeat Black Hat SEO techniques. If their efforts are successful – and really it’s just a matter of time before they are – your time and money may be wasted. Why spend money on search engine optimization that could be useless in just a few months? Worse yet, search engines aren’t just knocking these sorts of sites down in rank; they’re totally removing them from search results.

Some of these Black Hat methods include using cheap labor or robots to perform a number of tasks. For instance, sometimes these services will sign up to tons of forums and or social networking sites and simply spam the link to a site everywhere possible. This is a definite annoyance for many webmasters, who end up with sites cluttered in meaningless links.

Link farms are another common type of Black Hat SEO. These sites are knockoffs are legit online directories, and are packed with links, many of which lead to very poor web sites. Some of them just link back and forth between each other and the link site, causing users to get lost in a sea of useless information. SEO organic techniques can be a great alternative to some of these Black Hat search engine optimization plans.

The main thing that people associate with web sites is their domain names. Domain names that feature the keywords that your website is targeting are a great start to organic SEO. Another, related, search engine optimization idea is to customize your web site’s title the same way: feature the keywords that your site targets. Both of these elements are factors that search engines use to rank a site.

There are many more ways to optimize a site with an SEO organic plan, but these tips will get you started.

When you talking about SEO then one thing that you have keep in mind is Keywords. Keywords are an important part of SEO. Unfortunately, many website owners overdo it. Keywords are one of the most important tools in ranking high on search engines. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is essential for the success of almost every website. The majority of traffic to websites is brought in by search engines. In today's online world, your website doesn’t mean anything to anyone unless it can be found by your customers. Optimizing your site so it appears high in the search engines seems to be as much as an art form. So you realize how much SEO is important for websites

Today even in the UK we have seen the news about the American First Lady, Michelle Obama, and the scandal over Google searches throwing out a racist image.

Let's leave aside the revulsion over this - it's a daft schoolkid prank and should be treated with that sort of contempt. Google had a decision to make about removing it or not and opted to support freedom even when it offends - we have similar stuff happening in the UK, check the recent media coverage of the British National Party over here. No link deliberately, otherwise they might get clicks.

I'm not here to write about censorship issues, though. What concerns me more is the nature of SEO and how someone has manipulated a search so that their stupid cartoon gets to the top of a major search engine. It's clearly been done with so much sophistication, so much skill in the underlying code, that it actually gets listed above the stuff the real Michelle Obama is doing, or maybe her husband, like running the biggest country in the world during a massive economic crisis.

Annoyed? Yes I am. Regretful that the Obama family has been dragged into something like this? Yes, but I accept racism exists. Hopeful that Google, Microsoft and the others will move some goalposts so this sort of trash stays in the trashcan where it belongs rather than at the top of the search lists? You bet.

If the new Google interface design is any indication, it appears that Google might actually be feeling a little heat, or at least some influence, from Bing. Danny Sullivan, who has been covering search for years, had a post in his Search Engine Land blog last week about the new interface overhaul Google is undertaking for its core search product. When I looked at the screen shot that Sullivan provided, it's hard not to see the Bing influence here.

The question is what does it mean? Well, first of all, it means competition is good for consumers, a point I've been making since I started this blog. Bing's clean interface is one of its core strengths and it didn't go unnoticed by Google. But does that mean Google feels threatened by Bing? Not necessarily.

How Do You Generally Search?

I don't know about you, but when I conduct a search I generally start with Google. I have my search box in Firefox set to Google by default. I enter my search criteria, press Enter, and usually I find what I need in the first several results. I don't tend to look much further, and I don't look at the other stuff like content filters. If I do a News search, I might click a date filter in the left column, but beyond that, I don't tend to use any of the other tools that show up in the interface.

For someone like Sullivan, who is a great blogger, reporter and search guru; he's always paying attention to this stuff because it's what he does. But for the average searcher, most of the extraneous stuff is just that. It's nice to have on the oft chance you need it, but if the search engine is doing its job, chances are you very rarely (or never) use the bells and whistles. Bing has some nice tools for filtering or narrowing down your search criteria, but I wonder how many people use them?

What's Wrong With Using Google?

Last week, I had a long exchange on Twitter with Disa Johnson, who runs the site Search Return.com. Johnson suggested to me that Google had lost its way. For her, Google wasn't a search engine, so much as an ad revenue generator. Further, she didn't like that they had spread out into Gmail and other tools, much less a browser and an operating system.

For me, however, I use Google because the search engine works--pure and simple. It gives me the answers I want quickly and efficiently most of the time. I also use Google Docs, Gmail, Google Reader and several other Google tools. I do so because the tools are free, convenient, and as a friend of mine says, "It's Google. They are going to constantly improve it."

Should Google Worry About Bing?

Generally, I don't think Google has a lot to worry about where its core search product is concerned. They consistently control anywhere from 65-70 percent of the search market, but there are warning signs on the horizon. It appears that Microsoft and News Corp are in talks to implement at least parts of the plan I outlined in my recent post, Mark Cuban's Plan to Kill Google. The jury is still out whether that will matter because as one commenter pointed out in my post, while News Corp (or any site) can block the spiders from finding it, it won't stop others who link to that site. Others pointed out that if you pulled out the top 100 or top 1000 sites from Google and moved them to Microsoft, others would gladly take their place. Neither does it mean that there would be a mass exodus from Google to Bing.

But Johnson thinks users are more fickle than that. She believes it could turn on a dime. I'm not so sure I agree, but it is clear from the new interface design, that Bing is at least having some influence on the Google design team, and for us as consumers, we can rejoice. As long as Microsoft acts as a check on Google and pushes them to make improvements to the product, the better off we will all will be, but extrapolating that into a massive Google meltdown, is to me, taking it all a bit too far. Google isn't going anywhere any time soon.

Bing has a better conversion ratio as compared to Google. However, Bing gets low traffic share as compared to Google, but if you get some click from Bing then it will turn in lead ( on most of the occasions).

The best thing about Bing is that it has a better user interface and gives you a feel of FRESHNESS every single day.

Instead of focusing your optimization entirely on Google, one must concentrate on gaining rankings on other search engines including Bing and Yahoo.

Google Click Fraud rate (on PPC) is far much higher as compared to Bing/Yahoo.

Bing gives preference to few parameters listed below:-

1) Domain Age - Bing gives preference to the age of your domain. Google also gives preference to domain age.

2) On-Page/Off-Page Optimization - Bing gives more preference to On-Page optimization. However, Google gives more preference to off-page optimization. It is best to carefullly do on-page optimization and make sure your keyword density does not go overboard.

Among various on-page optimization factors, TITLE is the most important one. If your keywords are listed in the TITLE then you will get higher rankings on both Google and Bing.

Here is the procedure...
2. Go to adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal
3. Type the main keyword that you want to research, I suggest use exact match.
4. From the result that google provide, try to find long tail keywords 3 or more words, at from 800 - 5000 search per month is okay but if you see more higher searches you can get it..put it on the excel to organize.
5. Time to check your keyword for competition,it is the critical part of the keyword research.
6. Go to google.com , be sure that you activate your seoquake, then start searching for the keywords that you get from google keyword tool. After seeing the results, using the SEOQuake plugins check the PR of the top 10 search result. If all the top 10 results is pr 0 or n/a for sure it is easy to target the keywords... You only needs 5-20 back links for you to be on the first page.

It is hard to find the keywords that you will target that has a PR 0 n/a in the top 10 results, But if you gather it all, it's just like you are mining gold.

This is basically how the search engine spider crawl through your website.

Basically your website get indexed and ranked when the search engine spiders crawl trough your website. Below is how to google search engine works.

First, Google spider crawls out from the base computer system in its search engine. After crawling out, the spider will go out and check for website or web-pages. When spider found a web page, it will start to read through the web-pages. It will start off with the title tag (between open <title> and close <title> tags). Here, it will read through your keywords or phrases, description tags and meta tags.

After that, the spider will start to read the content of your page. It will take note of keywords or phrases that appeared in your content which has been specified in keywords and description meta tags. It will also take note on the heading you use as larger heading get higher priority. Also, it will also take note on your picture alt tag description and this is why you are recommended to put alt tag for all your pictures.

Now comes the important process related to the ranking of your website. When the spider found a link, it will take note of the links title and follow the links. You get the traffic benefit if the web page is linking to your website. The spider reaching your website will then repeat the process again and start off by reading through the head to body tags of your website.

Hi All
I've got an interesting problem. A site of mine (sorry I've just seen that no links are allowed so I've removed it) has been on-line for about 2 years now but simply won't come up on a google search and yet comes up in position 1 page 1 of yahoo for various search terms.
I could understand if it came up lower down the orders but it doesn't (and hasn't) come up at all.
A site:xxx search brings up the site but even very specific searches (like all of the home page url except the 'k' of 'xxx.co.uk') doesn't bring it up, nor does a search for the exact home page title or description.
At first I thought it might have been penalised for something or other but as that usually last for up to a couple of months or so it should not affect it now. The site has been given a page rank 2 by google.
I have various other sites which are similar in build (but not content) which do well in all search engines but this one is just a mystery to me.
If anyone can spot what's going on then please, please tell me.
Many thanks
PS [I'll probably need to let someone know the site name at some stage so that they can check oit out.]
