Hosting Choices

I have a few simple php and asp sites hosted on cheap shared hosts but I am working on a new project which I hope to be much larger in scope. I have not yet decided between PHP and ASP.NET as a programming, but leaning towards PHP.

My question looking forward is, at what point is it necessary to upgrade hosting and what are the options?
