problem in finding whether data is image or not?

Hi ,
i had data in my server folder.can i have any way to check whether that data is image data or not in jsp?.I can do it by checking whether its extension is jpg ,gifor bmp like wise.but we can have somany formats of image data.so apart from that is there any way to find out the data is image data or not?
