any way to communicate with Serial PORT using JavaScript

Hi I'm triying to develop an application to read barcode (from laser scanner) and manipulate the string with mysql. I've read something about serial port but i'm not sure how to do it. Could somebody give me a piece of advice?

Why do you want to use JavaScript?

You can use the Serial Port via Java using Sun's comm package.

Figuring out how to work a piece of hardware programmatically without document is not an easy task for the inexperienced!
