Counting requests.

Is there a mechanism for counting requests to specific files on a server. What is it?

Also, what if the file is not php? What if I wanted to count how many times an image or xml feed is requested? How do I do this?

there is special programs offers status about the websites
you need to install one like this
i guess one of them called awstat
