mssql connection problem

i want to connect mssql(microsoft sql server 2005), when i connect the following error displayed. why this error

mssql_connect() [function.mssql-connect]: Unable to connect to server:

note:in my system mssql 2005 is not installed..i connect server which is in another system connected through LAN.

if i connect the sqlserver 2005, is it need that mssql software in local system(my PC)?
