I'm trying to figure out how to build a site using table for the layout. Like the following:

I know using table isn't the brightest idea. I am just trying to learn how the table tag can be used in different situations. I can't seem to get the "content" area working, like for news. These are the html codes I have written.

<html>
<head><title>INDEX</title>
<style type="text/css">
<!--

td {background-color: #fff000}

td.lftmenu {background-color: #ffffff}

-->
</style>
</head>
<body>
<center>
<table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" valign="top" width="600px">
<!--banner/header-->
<tr>
    <td width="600px" height="150px" valign="top">
    <img src="images/Yuzuha.jpg" width="600px"  height="150px" alt="yuzuha_from-utawarerumono" title="Yuzuha: Utawarerumono" /></td>
    </tr>
<!--top menu-->
<tr>
    <td width="600px" align="center">Home | Gallery | Animations | Book Record</td>
</tr>
<!--left menu-->
<tr>
    <td width="120px" valign="top">
    <table>
    <tr>
        <td class="lftmenu" width="120px" height="160px" valign="top"><span>TITLE</span><br />Menu<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;-Submenu<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;-Submenu<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;-Submenu</td></tr>
    <tr>
        <td class="lftmenu" width="120px" height="600px" valign="top"><span>TITLE</span><br />Menu<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;-Submenu<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;-Submenu<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;-Submenu</td></tr></table>
    </td>
<!--content goes here-->
    <td valign="top">
    <table>
    <tr>
        <td class="lftmenu" width="120px" height="160px" valign="top">&nbsp;</td></tr></table>
    </td>
</tr>
</table>
</center>
</body>
</html>

*or please direct me to a site which explains thoroughly how tables are use as layouts. i tried google and other search engine and yet no luck.

Nevermind. I forgot the very basic of using tables as spreadsheet. In order to expand different rows and cols, and accommodate the scaling I needed to add in row/colspan. It was somewhat self-explanatory. lol =(
