Converting images to vector

I am looking for a way to convert pixel based images to vector. I believe this can be done in Illustrator, but am not quite sure how. I often have work from Photoshop that I later need to convert. What type of file should I save it as (from Photoshop) to then import it into Illustrator.. a tif file maybe? Sometimes I am given a jpg - can that be changed to a vector in Illustrator? Then how would I go about changing the work to vector once in there? I am not very good with Illustrator so I find that I have to do my work elsewhere first.
I appreciate any respectful help.

I am looking for a way to convert pixel based images to vector.

You can do that by exporting from Photoshop and save it as extension file .ai and open that file in Illustrator.
