I am using Windows 6.1 build 7601 Ultimate edition x64. I have tried several modems with same result in both bridge & PPPoE mode. PPPoE mode has its own problems that prob'ly can't be resolved but I hope that the bridge mode problem can be resolved.

Sometimes when a link failure occurs in the modem, most probably something goes wrong with the connection to WAN miniport & as a result when PPPoE adapter tries to reconnect, it does not attempt a new connection by "Connecting through WAN miniport(PPPOE)/ Verifying username & password/ Registering computer to network" phases; it omits all of those & just says "successfully connected to BSNL/ Command completed successfully" . However, no connection has been established at all & the only way to properly connect to internet is to reboot the OS. Any attempt at disconnection gives "No active connections".

One more point to note: installing some applications increases the chance of this problem: like NIS 12 Beta, Zonealarm.

I have seen this posted in many forums before but so far no actual solution. I have heard about the reputation of this site & seriously hope that you people have something conclusive to contribute towards a real solution to this unique problem.

the only advice i can think of right now
would be to disable, then re-enable the adapter when the connection is lost
then at least you wouldn't have to restart maybe

wow, i just learned that windows7 can use a single wireless adapter as a hotspot and a client at the same time while i was trying to learn what a WAN miniport is....

being a network problem i think you might try posting
in the networking section so people there see it to .
http://www.daniweb.com/hardware-and-software/networking/13

The forum there is currently lacking good helpers thus i doubt posting there will resolved his problem. Try this link.

1) Does this problem happen all the time or does it only occur sometimes?
2) Does this only happen to your laptop/ desktop pc or when using other computers the problem occur too. If the problem occur when using your computer something is wrong with your computer
3) What modem brand are you using? Tell me the brand and the model number
4) You said " One more point to note: installing some applications increases the chance of this problem: like NIS 12 Beta, Zonealarm. "

Does uninstalling this application help. Try it and tell us whether it works PPPoPE mode. Try using an ethernet cable and see whether it works.

5) Check your network settings and your firewall. Make sure it is turn off.
6) Also you cannot connect to the internet, try connecting to other network and see whether you can access internet.

You can only use one mode at a time. When using Bridge mode you cannot use

To skilly:

Nah, a PPPoE adapter can't be enabled or disabled, I won't be able to do that anyway because the adapter would've been in use. LAN can be disabled but that does not help.

To jingda:

1. It only happens sometimes, but installing certain application increases the probability to almost 100%,like ZoneAlarm.

2. I have only one computer.
I have changed all the hardware of my PC recently so it must be a fault of the OS installation.

3. I have tried three modems: Nokia Siemens C2110, D-Link GLB502T, iBall Baton iB-LR611A
All of them cause the same problem.

4. Removing those apps do not decrease the probability below approx 20%.
The connection has so many link failures that modem PPPoE mode fails & stops attempting to connect. Unfortunately I have no other ISP service in my area & my requests of replacing their last mile hardware are being ignored.
I am using Ethernet cable, not USB.

5. Are you asking me to switch my firewall off? I get regular network attacks that penetrate Windows firewall [Norton IPS blocks them]. I am afraid that disabling it completely will be a disaster.

6. When BSNL adapter stops working, I can dial mobile internet via tethered mode & can open web pages but sometimes after messing around a little the dial up adapter stops working too.

Also, I did not get much of the question in the link u provided, but the solution does not work. I need the connection to redial itself to counter those link failures. But I have tried disabling that option & creating a script to redial instead, but it does not solve the anomaly.
Hope these will help.

I don't know what recreated all those junks again. I always disable all adapters except Nokia, BSNL [My ISP] & LAN but somehow all those junks (including IPv6) keep getting recreated.

for your LAN problem, have you tried?:

open the properties of your ether adapter
networking tab, click IPv4(or6, if you can subnet IPv6!)
click propeties button
click use the following IP address
enter these
ip address 192.168.1.11 (or 192.168.1.2or?)
subnet mask 255.255.255.0
default gateway 192.168.1.1

hopefully this will make your connection static (vs. dynamic)
and autoconfiguration will be disabled, so you might need to set a DHCP address.
getting a router would probably solve your DHCP problem, since most are DHCP servers themselves. you might also need your ISP to tell you what thier DHCP address is,(i have heard of that before)

some useful cmd line (maybe)
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /flushDNS
ipconfig /renew
good luck!

-edit might want to run msconfig to check & see if DHCP client service is running....

Everything you said has already been done. One of my friends configured it that way. But for some reason DHCP is not being used. DHCP server is on in Modem [It has DHCP] & DHCP client is on in OS.

I think each time a serious problem arises, a fresh install of OS is the only thing to do. Sigh.

ok, but you also mentioned that you recently changed the hardware,
so running a hardware scanner/doctor-type program might be advisable & make sure you get all the updates might need from the manufacturers websites for 'em

also antivirus, why use so much antivirus, the programs are probably fighting eachother
i only use microsoft security essentials, and it seems like enough...

if a fresh test install on a test partition with only your problem app installed still does not help, also try setting that problem program(s) to run using a compability mode
good luck!

If that is the case, you have to reformat every time this problem arise. You need to use another comouter or laptop to test it out. You can borrow one from your friends or your family. Anyone who will lent you to check whether the problem lies with your laptop or not. If the problem lies with your laptop it is a software issus.

Why is your DHCP not enabled. What do you use to configure IPv4? Have you try renewing the DHCP lease?

I reformatted & reinstalled Windows 7 & the problem is BACK. My installation is fully updated sp1. I think this problem is windows 7 specific. Unless someone finds an workaround, this problem will never be resolved. Can anyone tell me when they replaced the WinXP network system with this *&%$? Will I get the good old networking back if I move back to Vista?

You can try. If vista is having no problem that means windows xp is having issues based on what you said above.

No No! I am currently using Windows 7. XP did not use to have this problem as far as I can remember. I want the old XP networking mechanism back. I am curious whether Vista has same networking as 7 or it has XP like mechanism.

hi,

Have you checked it using another OS?
Is the automatic connection attempt option is set at the modem (hope it is configurable)?
Have you disabled the IPv6 settings (do it in network properties as well as in services)?
Have you updated your NIC's hardware? Is it compatible with Win7?
Did you check the error log in the PC as well as the Modem? What kind of errors do you see?
Is there a property set in a Firewall to disable the connection when an intrusion comes or reaches a certain threshold?
Is it your side or ISP side? I have seen such situations as well.

Thanks!

changed my mind ,bad idea on my part sorry

I think Windows 7 auto updates the NIC driver. The embedded Realtek Networking is not a good product, it is already having overheat issues but LAN seems to work well during those lockdowns, but I'll try USB mode connection to Modem.
Norton firewall block will behave in a systematical way, not in an abnormal way. And that firewall blocks only attacker IPs for a specified time.

I don't think that modem keeps error logs for Bridge Mode, & OS networking won't go into a logical lockout for a modem fault.

The answer to all your other questions are already there in original post. I have gathered all the symptoms I could verify with my limited knowledge & described them in original post. I'll have to practically copy-paste that post here to really explain the problem to u. I have written it in my best English and have tried to keep it as short as possible.

But I am using PPPoE mode of the modem currently because the frequency of link failures have decreased so modem is not failing anymore in keeping the line alive. If PPPoE mode continues to work fine, and link failures decrease (I am planning a letter to Nodal Officer) I am a happy man.

oh one more thing that I have forgotten to include:
Make sure that TCP/IP connection attempts does not reach the threshold. The next attempts may fail. A fix is there however. You can check the event viewer for the error. Have you checked it? If the connection attempt does not work 2nd time, the nearest reason is that a services which required to establish the connection is stopped running. Again it should be in the system log in the event viewer (services errors or services start stop). You haven't mentioned them. Can you tell me the NIC you are using? (model) Have you tried Windows XP Mode in Windows 7 (which will emulate the connection as it was in WinXP)?

Good luck!
