Just wondering whether self-answered threads (without any contribution) - i.e. OP posts and then marks as solved - should be classed as "unanswered" and show in the Unanswered tab of a forum / search. My feeling is that they shouldn't, but I'm sure there's a good reason why they do. Can anybody shine a light on this?

I think it should be fine to have them there to promote other folks to contribute their own solutions/answers.

Ok. I take your point, but not sure many people would take the time to offer a solution to a solved thread - which doesn't have a posted solution.

Sometimes I'll post in the thread with

care to share your solution?

although I am tempted to just delete because the thread adds nothing.

I've also seen many times where a newbie will mark their own new thread solved because they don't realize what the button means.

Stupidity is its own reward in that case. Heh heh

I think sometimes they're just seeing if they can rort the reputation system.
