I think I finally understand why Trump is doing so well (he recently pulled even with Hillary Clinton). It's only after years of shows like American Idol and America's Got Talent that his rise is possible. These shows got Americans used to the idea that they could vote with no actual consequences. In most cases (with very few exceptions), people with minimal talent are voted on and selected as "the winner", then almost immediately return to obscurity. In some cases (remember Sanjaya Malakar) there was an actual campaign to rig the vote so that a thoroughly undeserving candidate would win. …

I'm hoping that people will post unusual or little known facts here. It would be proper to include a link to a source for confirmation. Here's a start. Speedy Gonzales was banned by the Cartoon Network for being an offensive stereotype, only to be returned after mass protest by the Hispanic-American community. Any dog parents out there? My sheltie just turned 6 months. She's suuuuuch a smart breed that I literally need to keep her mind occupied every moment throughout the day or she gets bored and destructive. She gets all her meals in the form of puzzles. Today has been especially difficult because she has been non-stop barking every moment *unless* I'm actively training her, playing with her, entertaining her, or feeding her. The moment I walk back over to the computer and try to get back to work, she's back at it. Anyone else here work from home while dealing …

I think we can all agree (this will likely provoke disagreement) that a voting machine that records a vote electronically without a way to do a manual verification is a bad idea. How then should a proper voting machine work. My suggestion is to have a touch screen on which the voter makes his/her selections (invalid selections would not be allowed). The voter would 1. Make selections on screen 1. Print ballot 1. Compare ballot to screen Once the voter receives the printout he/she would then compare the printed ballot with the selections made on screen. At that point the …

Hello there all, I have a question. Why does medical research take up alot of computing power/processing power. For example the folding@home project by Stanford ? Another example being weather calculations or weather research. What exactly makes them take up so much power ? For example, I saw in a news clip that the army just bought alot of PS3's to simulate a human brain. Do all these 3 examples have different traits or something else ?

A few years ago, the Canadian government (at that time it was a majority Conservative government under Stephen Harper) proposed legislation which would have weakened the privacy rights of all Canadians. Part of the justification was to allow easier apprehension and prosecution of people trafficking in child pornography. The justice minister, Vic Toews, said that anyone opposing the bill was in favour of child pornography. Of course, this was a ridiculous statement, creating a false dichotomy of "you're either with us or against us". Similarly, the media seems intent on painting anyone who favoured Great Britain's exit from the European …

Hey guys I decided a while back that I wanted to get into coding. I started a few days ago with sever tutorials ranginf from how the internet works to codeacademy which starts me straight off coding simple Python. This seems all well and good but the problem I have is that there is just so much free content knocking about I dont actually know what would be the best logical place to start. I think the general consensus from what I can work out is to start with javascript but im open to listen to any advice people have. …

I've recently become addicted to the Walking Dead. I was sick in bed Two weeks ago and needed something on Netflix I could binge watch. Now, as we speak, I'm posting here on DaniWeb, trying to come up with some creative stuff to write about, while I watch and try to fall asleep. My reason for starting this thread is because, back in the day, DaniWeb's community grew out of all of the random stuff people posted. The kinda off topic stuff that got us to form a community and really get to know each other. I really think we …

These are things I'd like to see available now that should be possible given current technology as opposed to pie-in-the sky things like "I really want a teleporter". For example, I am getting very tired of watching TV shows where the (supposedly) background music is so loud that I can barely make out the dialog. In some cases the BG music is not even music; it is just a loud whining cacophany. The music/whining starts out quiet but gets louder and louder to build dramatic tension. This, I can only presume, is due to either the writers 1. are so …

I've been listening to various debates on the potential impact of AI and the two sides seem to boil their arguments down to 1. AI is dangerous because it will mean the extinction of humanity as machines that can improve themselves will do it so rapidly as to quickly make the gulf between humans and AI like the gulf between ants and us. 2. AI is awesome because it will free us from menial jobs leaving us to be infinitely creative. Recently, [Bill Gates](http://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/bill-gates-artificial-intellegence-doesnt-think-ai-taking-everyones-jobs-is-a-bad-thing-2018-1-1014021350) stated that it will be a net positive because we'll all have a lot more free …

some problem with your computer just sort of fixes itself, and you don't know what was actually wrong or what made the problem go away? Case in point. On my main XP box, I could not get a proper connection to one of the networked printers in my home. Every time I tried to connect to this specific printer hosted on another PC, it came up as a LanManager connection - which works like crap. I delete the printer, try to set it up as a local port (which other printers came us as all by themselves) and Windoze tells …

Now will they? I have my doubts. Here in Belgium, we have one of the most dense road maps of the world. Traffics jams, road constructions, pits in the road etc. It's even hard for a human being like me to go from A to B. So how would a piece of machinery do better?

Cop shows that include a 5 minute foot chase. This is usually the result of the cops shouting out a suspect's name from half a block away instead of waiting until they are within arm's reach. Inevitably the suspect runs into the path of a car or truck and the chase ends up being pointless anyway. Cop shows where six cops burst in the front door of an apartment/house but neglect to post anyone at the fire escape/back door which is the only other exit. This leads to another pointless (and prolonged) foot chase. Shows where a victim is being …
