Call of Duty: Black Ops Ups the Ante With Wager Mode; Reveals New Perks, Killstreaks

After Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 set the bar as to what the franchise could achieve, nobody envied the shoes that Treyarch had been asked to fill with producing the next installment. Their previous involvement and lackluster contributions to the franchise were what Aquaman brought to the table for the Justice League of America. Not anymore, as the studio embarks on the largest launch in Activision history with guns a blazing. Treyarch is upping the ante with Black Ops, literally. The studio just released a video highlighting their four new free-for-all modes which will make matches that much more frenetic and addicting, giving action junkies a double fix of headshots and gambling.

Wager Matches are the new competitive game types offered inBlack Ops' multiplayer, where gamers get to wager Call of Duty Points (CP), the in-game currency that you use to purchase weapons, upgrades, and character customizations. Players use their CPs to bet on placing in the top three spots, known as being "In the Money". CPs are an entirely separate entity from the XP one gains to advance in rank, so they definitely tote some worth and significance for players looking to branch out with their weapons and classes. If you thought trash talking 12-year-olds and people from Brooklyn were bad before, wait until November.

The four new modes are:
One in the Chamber
Players only spawn in with a pistol, a single bullet, and three lives. If you kill somebody, you are able to take their bullet. Aim carefully, because a missed shot means it’s just you and your enemy jousting with sharp objects.
Sticks and Stones
Players are equipped with a crossbow, ballistic knife, and a tomahawk that if you kill somebody with, bankrupts them completely of their wagered CPs.
Gun Game
Players start off with a lowly, bottom tier pistol, and progressively work their way up the weapons ranks as they get kills. The winning player is the player who first manages to work through all the weapons available in game, up to a tier of 20. When a player dies, they get set back a tier.
Sharp Shooter
Players all start with the same weapon, which cycles once a certain window of time passes. Each kill grants you a perk, eventually giving way to a scoring multiplier.
Gaming site Kotaku has also revealed, after their hands-on multiplayer beta coverage earlier this morning, a significant portion of the perks and killstreaks that will be included for class customization. While not a complete list (Modern Warfare 2 killstreaks did go up to 25), here is what has been revealed so far:

Perk 1Lightweight - Move Faster (Pro)
Scavenger - Pick up ammo from fallen enemies, replenish lethal grenades (Pro)
Ghost - Undetectable by the Spy Plane and the Blackbird
Flak Jacket - Reduces explosive damage
Hardline - Killstreaks require 1 less kill
Perk 2Hardened - Bullets penetrate better
Scout - Hold breath longer
Steady Aim - Increased hip-fire accuracy
Sleight of Hand - Faster reloads
Warlord - Equip two attachments to your primary weapon
Perk 3Marathon - Longer sprint
Ninja - Silent movement
Second Chance - Pull out your pistol before dying
Hacker - Ability to detect enemy equipment and explosives
Tactical Mask - Reduces the effect of flash and concussion grenades
Killstreaks3 – Spy Plane
3 – RC-XD (remote bomb)
4 – Counter Spy Plane
4 – SAM Turret
5 – Care Package
5 – Napalm Strike
6 – Sentry Gun
6 – Mortar Team
7 – Attack Helicopter
7 – Valkyrie Rockets
8 – Blackbird
8 – Rolling Thunder
9 - Chopper Gunner
11 – Attack Dogs

Call of Duty: Black Ops launches worldwide on November 11th, 2010. We'll see then if the game can live up to the hype and if Treyarch can finally climb out from under Infinity Ward's shadow.

RIP COD you were good there for a while... this is simply COD MW2 with MW2 PC alterIWnet mixed in it... and some COD WaW...

I mean seriously I see almost nothing new except some gametypes and some muts added to the kill streak and name changes how fucking lame... anyone think it's kinda shitty sounding?

I may be in the minority, but I am really looking forward to BlackOps. I understand it will not be a complete overhaul of MW2. Even if it is similar to MW2, I still enjoy playing MW2, so the new weapons, game modes, and maps make it seem well worth the money I will spend on it. Just my 2 cents

I am also in the minority then. I have always been a firm believer in if something isn't broken, then there is no reason to fix it. Call of Duty has become the definite multiplayer experience, silencing decades ruled by franchises like Quake and Unreal Tournament. Judging from the time I've spent on both Modern Warfares, I'm not worried about my dollar getting its value here with new weapons, killstreaks, modes, and maps.

If this video doesn't pump you up to play this game, you don't have a pulse: Inside XBOX Black Ops Video

I agree, have played ALL COD's to date, this seems like just so much more fun. Can't wait for the official launch.
