It was locked because the Forum rules specifically prohibit help being given for p2p software.

Keep it legal
Keep it clean and do not post pornographic material or link to it. In addition, do not post anything warez relaetd or related to other illegal acts. This includes tech support troubleshooting pirated software or P2P programs (i.e. Gnutella, Kazaa) used to obtain pirated software. Exceptions are helping to remove spyware or browser hijacks (that may or may not be related to illegal material) from a computer.

Bitorrent is simply another file sharing software program. The rule is in place because by far the majority of material obtained through use of such programs is illegally obtained and retained. People are acting illegally, in most instances, by downloading music and movies etc. instead of legitimately purchasing them.

We do not help people do this here, and unfortunately that means we also can't help people who are obtaining legitimate material through file sharing networks.

Childish 'flaming' is as unwelcome here as is piracy talk/assistance.

There has been no suggestion that sunandoghosh is actually downloading illicit material. Bitorrent can be and is used for legitimate file distribution as well as for piracy. some musical artists etc distribute their product ONLY via Bitorrent.

The rule here exists primarily because we have no way to determine if the use is legitimate or not, and because the prdominance of people use it unlawfully.

In the absence of indications to the contrary, decency would demand that we give the benefit of the doubt to the member who has been somewhat embarassed in this instance, would it not?

Get out of this forum, you pirate!

(Please don't run me through)

I dont know why u said like that (and it hurts being treated like that)...anyways i respect legitimacy and never knew that its more illegal than legal to download from such networks...

however the posts (except the one i quoted) has put things into perspective...

thank u...

I think I see the huge misunderstanding here.

SC probrably just glanced at the previous topic, saw what he thought as illegal and posted the sarcasm, then I looked at that, saw that SC thought it was illegal, and therefore thought that this is how we all think of him, especially since Catweazle added the quote from the forum directions.

So now let's get this straight. I don't think you are a pirater, and neither does anyone else who has read this thread more than once through.

OK?

Alright, some little fag in here gave me some more negative reputation. This is becoming rediculous. That's twice for this one thread. Whoever is doing this: You are the most childish and immature person here. By the way, you may think your making me mad, but I don't really care about the rep system.

Sunandoghosh, sorry if I offended you with my earlier post. We all make mistakes. I can't say that I haven't posted anything against the rules! So don't worry about your thread being closed. Some people are really touchy about the downloading topic, although they probably use file sharing networks also but wont admit it. Right now, I'm just a little pissed off at the stupid behavoir of some of the people that's given me negative reputation, I know it's not you though.

Surely using terms like the italicised words is unecessary, rude, and an action which would invite yet more? Some people will certainly issue negative rep not for what you say but for the way that you say it.

hhmmmmmmm??????????

Precisely! Nice comment.

Huh? If that comment was made in reference to the rules here and the people who have drawn them up then I find it somewhat offensive. Daniweb is supported by advertising revenue, and such a rule is a sensible one in light of that. Whether Dani uses p2p networks (which she doesn't) or not is totally irrelevent. This rule has nothing at all to do with making moral judgements about people, although you seem to be taking it as a personal affront!

Right now, I'm just a little pissed off at the stupid behaviour of some of the people that's given me negative reputation

But you said that it doesn't worry you?

Why on Earth get upset about reputation points? The washup of it all is that people value you for the friendliness you display, the politeness and consideration you offer, and the assistance you give them. Ultimately, postcounts and 'reputation points' mean bugger all!

There is no way of controlling the reasons that people award reputation points. People will use their own criteria to decide on it. Sometimes those reasons are valid, sometimes not. We simply have to live with it if the system remians in place. I choose to ignore it. Hell, I got issued negative rep the other day from a person who didn't like hearing that their hardware was damaged beyond fixing. Doesn't worry me a bit - it was simply cause for a chuckle!

Well crap, if I'm going to negative reputation, from now on I'm going to make it worth it.

thats ignorant, you shouldnt take the rep system so seriously. I dont even check my rep points, I dont pay attention to others rep. Right now, servercrash, your words are speaking louder than your rep points....

I've never taken any interest in my rep at all. People give you negative rep because they think it'll "show you who's boss" but as catweazle said,

Ultimately, postcounts and 'reputation points' mean bugger all!

I think this topic should be closed soon...

If you go to the Control Panel tab, you will see your Reputation score in there. You start with 10 when you join and it goes up (or down) from there.

To use it, you click on the Rate Post box at the top of each post.

This thread can probably answer most of your questions about it:

Glad you understand it.

And thanks for the rep, but until you have at least 11 points yourself, it doesn't actually 'add' to (or subtract from) anyone's score, but they do know you appreciated the help :)

Also, once you give it to one person, you have to 'spread it around,' meaning you have to give it to at least five other people before you can give it to the same person again.
