There's no point in turning this nice thread into who's country is more powerful and who lives better. You seem to be a hard working individual proud of his country. Anyway, Michael (<M/>) is a young student born a few years after the Cold War ended (from what I can tell). I recall when I was a young boy going through drills of getting under our desks at school. I recall wondering how that was going to help us when a rain of missiles were coming toward us. Lol..

I'm a first generation American in my family (family came to the US 50 years ago). I am very fortunate to have been born here and I'm extremely proud of my country as well and always concerned for its well being.

Just because he was russian, doesn't mean Russia should get all the respect. We respect the individual not the entire country. Sure, he had good calculations but we still could have got someone else to do it, I am pretty sure we had some guys with the same major(s).

Unfortunately, this thread is going beyond off topic. Lets stop talking about which country is best... Everyone is going to say their own country is best, even I would do that but what is the point... each country has it's advantages and disadvantages.

Only if they announce it and you hear the alarm, then it is either a: lockdown, fire, or disaster drill... But the drill that we were forced to do (which really annoys me) would be their "war-drills", it was the same procedure as all the others but it didn't have a name nor was it announced. I asked the teacher why we do this drill and he said, "War gives no warnings! You can't ever be sure when someone nukes us!" (he said it in a way he was a general, to be funny) ... So yeah, i guess they still exist in some schools.

They are not stupid animals, they are actually very smart. I am not sure why you have so much prejudice over other countries. Every country has bad and good people. Remove that thought over who is best and who is stupid because you don't know who you are judging. Judge people by the actions of an individual, don't judge a group of people because one of them happened to be a rotten egg. I suggest you study history a bit more carefully than that before making bigoted statements like that.

The two biggest periods of growth of opium cultivation in Afghanistan were during the Soviet occupation and, now, under the US occupation. There was an opportunity for the Soviet government to make a lot of money by taxing the opium growers for the money they made from selling their opium in Russia (through Kazakhstan). Basically, they figured they couldn't stop the trade so might as well invade the place, make the trade an interior business, and collect estate taxes from the opium growers. They went in and highly encouraged more farmers to grow opium, and got the Russians addicted to heroin by a massive inslot of inexpensive merchandise, especially in Novokuznetsk and other cities bordering Kazakhstan. It's a good way to scrape every last penny from your people's pockets (whatever they had left or managed to hide from the USSR government).

When the Afghans were left alone, they made modest efforts to reduce the production, and eventually the Taliban took more drastic measures and reduced the production by nearly 90%. Of course, when the US came in, pretty much the first thing they did was to reinstate the opium production to meet the (now) worldwide demand. I remember, even if it was a while ago, when people were raising concerns only a few months after the initial invasion that there were massive incentives and under-the-table deals given to ramp the opium trade back up as quick as possible. Today, they are breaking production records every year.

Heroin is not "the only thing the Afghans want to make", but it certainly seems to be the only thing everyone else wants them to make.

And, in any case, calling people who are just trying to survive as "stupid animals" just shows terrible ignorance on your part, or dare I say, full-blown bigotry.

Want to know an irony about afghanistan? They appear as poor (they are but the media makes it worst) but a lot of them are rich people. The rate you find millionares in afghanistan would be more common in america (based off of population). I know this because my parents are afghans and their parents were wealthy and so was the city but unfortanetly, people are suffering at the same time. 6 year old kids would be forced to feed the family (about 6 or more) and they work in the cold (afghanistan is a very cold place) and they only make enough money to buy themselves maybe a piece of bread and that will support the family. I have been there and seen it with my own eyes, it is heart breaking to see such site.

People shouldn't judge other people, it is a cruel thing to do. I am not sure why people like xanti can't judge people because of their actions...

I live in america because of decisions my grandparents have made. They wanted a better life. My grandfather attended my dream school and my father attended another of one my dream schools. To attend those schools and become wealthy at the end because of hard work, that would be the reason.
