We've been brainwashed to believe that profits are more important than survival. Political parties will move to protect their source of funds and those funds come from the very industries that profit from a lack of environmental protection regulations and laws. That is why, for example, when cities in the US pass laws to restrict fracking, state governments step in to override these laws.
