It is a directory on the daniweb.com domain. Think of domain as a computer, a sub-domain as a public share on that computer, and think of the rest as folders within the share. That is close enough for everyday use.

thanks guys for ur replies:)

subdomains cost money usually per subdomain (unless you get a plan that has it prepaid for 5, 10, 15, unlimited, ect), and directories (/techtalkforums) are free.

so what if you own your domain, can you just make sub domains? or do you have to pay or something?

My hosting company allows me to create them at no charge from my control panel...you can also use your .htaccess file to add subdomains.

this brings up a question of my own:

what is the .htaccess file? i understand that you cannot use this from windows (I have linux). how do I create it, and what do I put into it? do I need a special editor for it?

Surely you need to have a tutorial in web hosting :) GOOD LUCK

I remember one site i was on that didnt have "Use inpedendant sub domain cookies" enabled and people kept getting logged out and all kinds of errors........ (I think they have it enabled now as i havent seen anyone mention anything recently)
